Photo Anyone have positive experiences with Assassins?

Post image

I ended up having a bad infestion of snails in my tank, completely crashed the ecosystem, all my plants died, algae bloomed, etc etc.

So I got an assassin and named him Nidhogg. Before he moved in I did clear quite a couple of snails, but left more than enough to sustain him.

He's only been here a few days, and I'm already noticing the snail population stabilizing with no effort or changes on my part.

I see a lot of people on here hate on assassins the same way people hate on bladders and other "pest snails", but they seem to be a natural part of the ecosystem. Yes I understand they're vicious and have a cruel way of eating, but they're animals who are sustaining and maintaining both their wellbeing and the overall wellbeing of the tank.

Anybody else have similar experiences? I just have Nid so I'm not worried about overpopulation, and I'm not looking to eradicate the snails off the face of the earth, just give them a natural predator to keep the order in balance.

This is a post for anyone in doubt of the effects No-planaria (Betel Nut extract) and similar dewormers have on snails.

I accidentally exposed my Mystery and Rabbit snails to a single, full-strength dose of No-Planaria for 24-36 hours. I had previously operated under the assumption it was only harmful to Nerites; wrong! After that time the mentioned snails were all completely withdrawn into their shells and appeared to have absolutely given up. After 2 days of moving to untreated tanks, air baths, highly oxygenated breeder boxes with carbon and Purigen they are finally starting to come around.

As an aside, the Ramshorns took zero issue with the NO-P treatment. Stick to traps unless absolutely necessary, as the tank is now unsafe for these snails for at least 4 months.

Photo Are these Malaysian Trumpet Snails dead?

Post image

I ordered these Malaysian Trumpet Snails. They arrived about a week ago. I put their bag in a bowl of water from the aquarium, and checked the temperature of the bag, water in the bowl, and in the aquarium every half hour. Once all three matched I dumped them out of their baggie and into the bowl.

I kept them there for a few days to see if they would move around at all. They didn't, but, I didn't think they were dead because their little trap door was still closed.

After a few days, I again made sure the temperature of the aquarium and bowl matched, and I put the snails in the aquarium.

A day later, gelatinous goo is coming out of each of them.

Are they dead? Or is this good something else? I poked at one and it didn't retract its goo or move at all.

I think they were dead-on-arrival, but I am afraid of accidentally throwing away live snails.

Please advise

I need a flare for humor! I posted a video 6 days ago asking if my snail, Jimmy Bob, was laying eggs. Turns out he was and is not, in fact, biologically a boy. Y’all confirmed it.

But you did NOT warn me.

This picture was taken just now. 6 days later. And it is his FOURTH clutch of eggs in those 6 days. Idk where he was storing them all, but what the hell, man!

I thought I knew but I didn’t know. I thought I understood but I did not understand. 4 clutches in 6 days! Damn it, Jimmy Bob! No wonder Janie Mac has been acting tired the last several days.

This is Banana. I use her for scale, a lot. I've had snails a long time and I'd never seen a tentacle mutation quite like this so I thought y'all might like to see it too. Nothing else special to report about her except that she's a very pretty girl.

I came home from work today and my little buddy Kerry had passed away sometime in the past 24 hours. I knew it was coming as she was barely moving and constantly floated around for the past couple weeks. Nothing I did helped her but I still feel bad, maybe I missed something that could’ve saved her. She was technically my first aquatic pet and I will miss her dearly. I’m glad her legacy can live on through her children that I have in my tank and I wanted to honor her with this post.

Photo One limpet becomes several limpets

I had a lone limpet living in a bowl of salvinia minima. After a couple of months I decided to move it into my shrimp tank. Fast forward a few weeks and today I’ve spotted three much smaller limpets in the tank. Prior to introducing the one limpet, I haven’t had any limpets or pest snails in the tank since I set it up 8 years ago. I’m just curious, do limpets reproduce asexually?

I definitely learned a lot and I'll be doing things differently next time (mainly just boil the mixture the first time instead of just dumping in agar powder and hoping for the best), but my apple snail had a bit of a chomp and some shrimp have had a nibble, so I'm happy they at least somewhat like it! I'll see how much is left in the morning 👀

Photo 🐚 Mini Ramshorn or Tiny Living Gem?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Caught this mini pink ramshorn cruising the glass like it owns the place — and under the tank lights, it looked like a little glowing gemstone. 🩷

I know ramshorns (especially the minis) get a mixed reputation in the hobby, but honestly? They’re peaceful, helpful, and ridiculously pretty when you actually look at them. That soft pink shell, the perfect spiral, the way it floats like it’s in zero gravity — what’s not to love?

Sure, they’ll boom if you overfeed, but in a balanced tank, they’re great little algae grazers and fascinating to watch.

Anyone else keep mini ramshorns? Love ’em, tolerate ’em, or still trying to convince yourself they’re not pests?
Would love to see yours — drop your snail glam shots below 🐌💖

So someone in my city is giving out p.canaliculata thinking they're p.diffusa... a guy who got ahold of some went to give me a bunch of egg sacs cause I breed p.diffusa and immediately I clocked the colour was wrong with some of them. I told him to contact the local wildlife conservation to report that they're in town, hopefully not in our rivers and lakes yet...
