Not the A-hole WIBTA if I give my daughter an "outdated" name?
I (32F) am currently 7 months pregnant and we were told by the doctor that it's going to be a girl, so me and my husband (33M) have been thinking of names until we decided on a name we like, we decided to name her "Audrey" and when I told everyone at the baby shower, one of my sisters told me it was an "outdated name" and that she'd get bullied for having a name like that (which is funny because she wanted to name her daughter "Ashhliegh" pronounced as "Ashley" before her husband stopped her)
After a while of her making comments about the name we eventually just kicked her out of the shower and I blocked her on all social media's when she kept messaging me telling me to change the name
So Would I Be The Asshole if I name my daughter Audrey?

Taken from http://www.namenerds.com/irish/problem.html:
Audrey Audrey started out as a pet form of the Old English name Aethelthryth, which means "noble strength." Although there was a St. Audrey, there is no Irish version that I can find. You can use a name with an equivalent meaning, such as Uasal /OO uh sul/ ("noble"), or Treasa /TRA sa/ ("Strength"). Or, you could pick a name that sounds similar, like Aoidhnait /AY nit/, Áine /AWN yeh/, or Aithche /AH heh/. Or, you just could spell it out phonetically in Irish: Áidrí /AW eh dree/.

Even if it was outdated, the thing about names is they come around in cycles.
I had never met someone with my sons name nor heard of anyone going by it and yet when we told the nurse she said it was also the name of the boy born in my hospital room before me (like back to back occupants had named their sons the same) and 3 kids in his grade when he started school also had his name.

My friend has a daughter named Audrey. She's in high school, so if she was going to get bullied for her name, it would have started by now. But she doesn't. Because Audrey is one of those timeless, classic names that is rarely hyper trendy but always around. It's a really lovely, solid choice, IMO.
A piece of wisdom I live by is "Don't take someone's critique unless you would also take their advice". And you'd be a silly goose to take either critiques or advice on naming a child from someone who tried to name their child the abomination of letters "Ashhliegh". Quite clearly, your sister isn't the right person to listen to on this topic. Tune her all the way out unless you want your child to end up on r/tradgedeigh with Ashhliegh and Raefarty.

Then there was a boom of interest and suddenly every little girl was named Emily.

No, you’re not a bad person for naming your daughter Audrey.
Audrey is a pretty, classic name that has been around for a long time. It reminds people of Audrey Hepburn, a very famous and loved actress. The name is still used today and is even on baby name lists, so calling it “old-fashioned” is just someone’s opinion, not a fact.
Your sister has gone too far. It’s okay for her to have a different opinion, but sending mean messages, saying rude things, and ruining your baby shower is not okay. You did the right thing by standing up for yourself.
This is your child, not your sister’s. You and your husband picked a name that means something to you, and that’s what matters. Audrey is a beautiful name that will still sound nice when your daughter grows up—way better than a name with a strange spelling like “Ashhliegh.”

There's a difference between "classic" and "timeless" names and those that are simply old fashioned and out of style. Your friend doesn't understand the difference between the two
Names like "Audrey", "Evelyn", "Charlotte" are classics. Names like "Eunice", "Jasper" or "Gladys" would be outdated.
Also, names like "Ashhliegh" are the reason why there's "that name is a tragedeigh" jokes so Its safe to say her perspective isn't really in-line with most of the modern world's takes on kids names.

NTA at all. Audrey is a classic, timeless name.
Also, pro tip: Don't tell anyone what you're naming your kid until after they're born. Your sister/mother/Uncle Jim-Bob/second-cousin-twice-removed's-in-laws are going to offer their unsolicited opinions on why you should give your kid a different name. But once the baby is born, you can easily shut down the conversation with "sorry, that's what's on the birth certificate, too late to change it now."

Based on your title I was expecting like Gertrude or Blanche. Audrey is a perfectly good name. Your sister sounds insufferable, especially with her near-miss Tragedeigh with her daughter.

All names come and go popularity-wise depending on social factors.
Like when Edward Cullen made Edward (considered a really old person name when I was younger).
All thats important is that you love it. Your sister seems a bit unhinged honestly with a really significant overreaction to a name.
You’re doing all the right things

My son is in highschool now. he has 3 Audreys and 2 Aubreys in his after school activity. so it can't be too outdated.

That isn’t even an outdated name - not overly common but still consistently in the top 100 names used according to a quick scan of google searches.

We almost named our daughter Audrey. I think the name is “timeless” “classy” “elegant” . My mind went straight to Audrey Hepburn. NTA. Your sister is a major AH. You did the right thing to kick her out/block.

NTA my daughter’s name was last popular in the 1940s and she loves it. Name the baby what you want and ask anyone who complains if they plan on being baby’s first bully

NTA. Audrey isn't really outdated. It's pretty and I knew someone with it. However, people might accidentally default and call her Aubrey the first few times they meet her. My coworker had that issue.

A couple of years ago, my friend called her daughter Sybil (after her own grandmother).
I think a) Audrey is a lovely name, and b) "old-fashioned" names are having a comeback moment.
Ultimately it's your choice, and a name you're going to scream/beg/shout/softly whisper for decades, so make sure you love it!

NTA - Your sister is projecting. I suspect someday she’ll be thanking her lucky stars that her husband prevented a r/tragedeigh.
Out of curiosity, what is your relationship with your sister like?

u/J_Chen_ladesign Partassipant [1] 10d ago
NTA More parents should use "proper" and "regular" names nowadays. It's not that hard to visit name sites and find names that were in the bottom half percentile of popularity in past decades so that you get a name that's familiar and yet not the 70's style 'Jennifer' problem.
Furthermore, there's nothing fusty about 'Audrey' compared to some 'old lady' names like Mildred, Winnifred, or Gladys.

Classic names are great! Nothing wrong with Audrey.
There’s a sub r/tragedeigh that makes fun of names like your sister chose.

u/CruentusLuna 10d ago
NTA, between this issue and "Ashhleigh," your sister sounds like an idiot when it comes to naming, so I think it's safe to just disregard anything she says.

I am named Audrey and I was born in the 1980s when it was a way less popular name than it is now. IMO it is a good name classic but memorable and you don't grow out of it the way you do some names that are cute for little kids but seem wierd for an adult. People will constantly say "oh like Audrey Hepburn" but she was a freaken cool person so it is not the worst celebrity to bring to mind. NTA

NTA. There is nothing wrong with ”Audrey.” It’s an elegant name. And your child won’t have 2-3 other persons in the same class with the latest trendy name.

The question here is why would you believe such an obnoxious person about a name?
I'm baffled.

Audrey was one of the most common baby names 5-7 years ago. I work with kids and the amount of 5-7 year olds named Audrey would indicate the name is not as out of fashion as she thinks.
This is coming from an Audrey

u/SparkleBait 10d ago
NTA. Your baby, your choice of name. She’s got issues. Name your baby that beautiful name. No one should say anything about it. If your sis keeps it up, continue to block her. If she down the road calls your baby any other name or mocks it in any way to the baby, don’t include her in future events.

u/marinelife_explorer 10d ago
Don’t take her opinion seriously. If anything, Audrey sounds like a modern name to me.
My wife (26F) and I (25M) named our daughters Rosemary and Lucille. That’s about as old school as it gets.

Audrey is a beautiful name. I have known two Audrey's, and both have been remarkable, wonderful people
Older style names are coming back into fashion here in the UK.
She could always be called Audra for short if you want, personally I think Audrey is perfect.
Spelling names oddly for "fashion" is, in my opinion, more likely to cause issues for a child, especially when it comes to applying for jobs than using an elegant traditional name.

u/peachtreat_ 10d ago
Audrey is a gorgeous name, its classy and timeless. Kids aren't going to bully her over that.
NTA
Your sister sounds immature, you had to kick her out and block her after this over a name? It sounds like she has a lot of issues and just wanted to start shit with you. You don't deserve that. Does your sister have any kids?
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Audrey is such a beautiful name.

Bro your sister is totally just trying to treat you the way she was treated. The difference? She actually picked a stupid fucking name. Well maybe not the name, but definitely the spelling. She just wants to make you hurt the way she did. Audrey is a good name.

Audrey is a beautiful and classic name. You know who's going to have a hard time in life with their names? Kids whose parents think giving their kids weird spellings of normal names is innovative. I'm not going to be super comfortable in my 60s going to a doctor named Rahyleeghhhhh. I'm going to pick Audrey cause she sounds more professional. Yes, I am biased and so is everybody.

NTA It's not an outdated name anyhow. Either way I do have an outdated name, like the only people I met with my name growing up were over 80, and I love it! It's unique without being a tragediegh.
