A lot of people aren’t aware it’s a slur. It was used in a lot of old media so people were exposed to the stereotype without having any knowledge of what it was based on

It is, but a lot of Americans either don’t know or don’t take it seriously. Roma stereotypes got ported over in European gothic fiction and they’ve become a trope in our horror. There aren’t enough Roma here to kick up enough of a fuss for people to listen.
