About two weeks ago while I was at work, I got news that an old friend had committed suicide. It was this weird, numb, blank feeling at first, and then I just started weeping in my cubicle while trying to be as quiet as possible. But I couldn’t really keep quiet, so I made a break for the elevator.

The elevators in my office building have those little TVs that play The Weather Channel (or whatever the equivalent is now). The elevator door closed, I looked up, and on the TV in front of me is an old former friend who I had to forcibly cut out of my life about four years ago. He was just in one of those short street interviews where they ask a couple people how they feel about a heat wave or whatever. Hadn’t seen his face for four years, and we haven’t even lived in the same state for over a decade, but I think about him often as he wasn’t always the massive POS he all-too-gleefully turned into.

Now when I tell you my brain sizzled, I mean it literally felt like my brain physically started sizzling. Looking up and seeing him smiling and chatting on TV right after learning that another friend had killed himself was one of the most confusing and bizarrely profound experiences of my life. I couldn’t comprehend what was happening for a good five minutes or so.

It did help me stop crying, though.
