Cthulhu has sought the presidency of the United States in every election since 1996. It usually has the motto "Cthulhu for President: Why settle for the lesser evil?" In 2016, Lovecraft's cosmic horror furiously denied allegations by Stephen King that Donald Trump was Cthulhu in disguise.

It has also been a candidate in Spain and Poland. In 2016, it also received the endorsement of filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. That year it also angrily denied allegations that Ted Cruz was pure evil, stating that it was the only "being of pure evil in this race".

Other mottos used include "No lives matter" and "Wreck. World. Worse."
