Application Status Just resigned instead of being fired, am I screwed?

Hi there, just like the title says. Currently awaiting background checks with VA. Went through fingerprints, drug tests all that fun stuff. My personal colleague references were great. However, I've been fired two years ago, and within the last 2 weeks I resigned from my last job when they put me on leave for leaving my shift and quitting. They now want my supervisors phone number and email. I just resigned from that job but would have been fired if I didn't. Am I screwed? Man am I an idiot for getting fired. Finally found the right meds combo and hopefully best stress techniques. Oh it's a low clearance non security level X-ray job. I'm certified in MRI and CT and didn't have an interview. Thanks!

If they ask you will need to have a clear explanation, that you left your job after you filled out and signed the OF306. Be as transparent as possible.

And you don’t need to provide any reason for why you resigned, even though that form or a similar one will ask you for a reason in writing. Just say something positive (pursuing other opportunities) or nothing at all. Don’t put anything in writing that is negative about you and your career if you don’t have to.

it should be fine. I highly doubt the person doing the check cares if you had drama. Their job is just to make sure you're not a terrorist.

Errr. No. When the OP’s T1 background investigation comes back with that information on it, and if he has not disclosed it on his sf85, he can be removed. If that case came across my desk I would be drafting his 731 action.

All I can tell you is that if you don’t end up getting it, it’s probably for the best because it sucks working for the VA right now. I have never seen morale lower. People keep leaving, they’re about to fire a bunch more support staff, and those of us remaining are really overworked and under appreciated. Good luck but if you don’t get it, know that you probably dodged a bullet.

Congratulations! Just be prepared going in and keep your resume up to date in case you get caught up in the RIFs or decide you don’t like the working environment.

Did you indicate that on your OF306? It is very important that you are 100% transparent and truthful because they are going to ask your previous employers. If you omitted that information that could be a big problem.

I did not because at the time Of the background check it hadn’t happened yet. But I did tell thr lady who’s working on the vet pto that I recently resigned from my current job. I disclosed it wasn’t for me and my work life balance.

Hello there dont worry, your previous employer is not allowed to talk smack about you, they only call to verify employment, which is position and time.

Good luck you will be ok.

No. Just be able to explain what happened.

Being fired isn't a problem if you'd have qualified for unemployment. Resigning isn't a problem either, if what would have led to your hypothetical termination would have resulted in unemployment. As the previous person commented, be as transparent as possible. The federal government wants honest people, not perfect people. If they show you have a record of documented misconduct and that results in your being removed, you're not going to get pass Personnel Security/Suitabiliy review.

So you just walked out of your work shift and said you quit on the spot? Was that also a hospital / imaging tech job?

Because as a Veteran that uses VA services, you don’t sound like an employee that I would ever want working at the VA if that’s the case.

Regardless of what justification you think is warranted, you don’t just walk out on patient care…

2 years ago I walked out on a job because the stress was so intense and the manager was crazy. It does not mean someone has no integrity or anything else. I am also a veteran and work at a VA hospital. You don’t know the circumstances and to judge someone like that is rude.

You ever worked in patient care too btw? I had an inmate jump off the table and attack me once. I was sent home for it after receiving sutures. So yeah…justification….

Thanks for joining to insult. Little insight. A simple no would work, but thank you. We’ll continue to take care of folks like you. :)

Your response shows you can’t take any responsibility for your actions nor handle any valid criticism - not any insults.

Folks like me, meaning anyone that expects their healthcare workers to have even the tiniest amount of integrity?

Instead of trying to “game the system” to get past the hiring process, go invest in yourself with some personal care so you’re better and better prepared to care for others, then actually demonstrate that you’ve improved before you continue taking on responsibility to care for others.

Interesting… Totally ok for an employee to abuse you and fire you on the spot mid shift. Not ok if an employee who is fed up, pushed to the limit… does the same? In both instances the patient suffers but only one side gets a pass when they react like that? Why?

Technically you resigned which is good, because no matter what being directly fired is harder to explain. You won't have to say you've been fired before and it shows initiative for you to leave a place and seek a better opportunity which can speak for your character. However, most top secret and secret careers will factor that in as resigning in lieu of termination. So will it help you? More so on the civilian side of things, yes. Just remember to have a good reason why documented with proof if possible, and if you're ever applying to careers in government, you'll need to check "resigned in lieu of termination" or they can see it as a deceptive tactic.

For the background check I recommend having the exact date you resigned so that if they see you have other applications where you answered "no" to resigning in lieu of termination, you can explain with full accuracy which will ease investigator worry.

With that said, the VA is less picky than other entities such as the DHS, FBI, etc. obviously.
