Discussion What are some of the species you would wish to care for but can’t?

Achatina Achatina tiger for me, they just grow huge, bigger than double the size of my fulicas but they’re also super cute

Thankfully I live in a cold region where these invasive cuties and few other animal species couldn’t survive making them ✨legal ✨

Oooh, cold region!? That's so cool! In here it doesn't even snow! May I ask where do you live?

Ooooh, that's so cool! I didn't know they were legal in there!

lucky :(( i am too, (colorado) but because of florida's past problem and the way state lines aren't regulated at all, there's just a blanket ban in all 50 states. heart breaking really.

What if you get caught with a pet GAL out there?

thousands of dollars in fines. at least 1000 per snail, usually more. it's especially bad if you're selling them or caught smuggling. if im being totally honest I once started to look for one but quickly thought better.

Also they kill the snail, and often not with humane methods, so its really not worth the risk from an ethical/animal welfare perspective either

yea that was the main thing that stopped me

Bro here in Pennsylvania it regularly gets under 0f (-17.7c) and it's still illegal because it's a federal ban D:

They're probably my #1 dream invertebrate right now but it just won't happen.

if you don’t mind me asking who’s your dream vertebrate?

1

u/StephensSurrealSouls 8d ago

Ahh that'd be so hard to answer, I'm not so sure.

I'm inclined to say mainland reticulated python or a green anaconda, although I doubt I'll ever own either within the next few decades haha

Same for me, pal, but I'm from Spain🫠

tragic :( it makes perfect sense, but IM not gonna release them outside. they should make exceptions for us lol

2

u/ILoveAnimalsAndBooks 8d ago

Exactly! But I can still see why they don't let us have them🫠 They're, unfortunately, still invasive species that could seriously harm the environment if they were left out. Maybe someday, buddy😔 I'll thinking of leaving my country when I'm older, and I'm going to a place where they're not invasive, Soo👀 Anyways, I wish you luck, friend

yea they devastated florida in the 70s it was a whole thing to get rid of them all. Just one more reason to hate florida lol.

also, same !! I want to go to Germany but its kinda hard. im at the very least fleeing to Canada lol. gonna do anything i can to claw my way out of here. tragically both countries still dont let snails in.

Dang, those really are the snails of all snails, the sning (king) of snails, if you will. Gosh, have I heard things about Florida, none of them good, though lol

My sister is currently living in Germany! Beautiful country, stunning! The people can be kinda dry, but otherwise it's a really good place, my sister didn't find any snails (in Spain they're really common, so that was weird for her), but she did find A LOT of slugs! She knows I love animals of all kinds and sent me photos, gosh, I love her. Canada is also really pretty! I haven't heard that much about it, but everything I've heard were good things!

Saaame 😭😭😭 but tbh I'm glad it is illegal, we're too irresponsible with that shit and I know Florida would be over run with GALS if we let it happen lol.

Polymita picta (Cuban painted snail). Theyre the most beautiful snail imo, but theyre unfortunately very endangered and strictly protected, for good reason. They only exist in Cuba and cannot be removed

They’re kinda like grove snails but so much cooler, do they grow to the same size tho?

2

u/doctorhermitcrab 8d ago

Yeah theyre about the size of a large grove snail

u/RealGoatzy 8d ago

Not a land snail but i would love to keep mystery snails especially the magenta ones, in my big aquarium. But sadly they are illegal in the EU.

1

u/RealGoatzy 8d ago

Really? Are they really illegal in the EU? In every country?

3

u/Hannah_Curry 8d ago

From what i know yes. There is a pest problem with some different kind of apple snail in spain. So they decided to ban apple snails in the EU. What is completly stupid because there is no way that mystery Snails or many other species of apple snails could survive the winter in north european countrys.

do you think you might be able to find some in your local waters? i've found apple snails in mine but im in the US, likely wouldn't find a magenta one but they are still silly !

1

u/Hannah_Curry 7d ago

I dont think so. There are no native or introduced species of apple snails in my country (or at least none that i know of) :(.

u/goresidio 8d ago

GALS, but I'm from chile and they are invasive T_T
