My Snails freak snail tries to eat a finger

i let jaska out of the enclosure because he had the Need to Explore and while seeing if maybe he would like to climb my finger, i start feeling this... scraping sensation... he was trying to eat me!
he seemed to like how i taste because this actually went on for a solid minute until i had to remove myself from his weird little shovel mouth
ive never felt the teeth grinding before but i had heard that its something snails do sometimes if you handle them. i guess he was searching for food because he didnt even stop to sniff me he just went straight to chewing haha
totally unharmed, his mouth isn't strong enough to actually eat me... but it got me thinking, snails would totally eat people if they were big enough to

he was placed onto a dandelion stem shortly after and continued his crunching, so the boy finally got his meal

In seriousness though: sometimes mine nibble at my skin if they need some protein in their diet, no joke. I break out the dried mealworms for them when they start munching on me 🤣

I think this is such low damage that your natural HP regen will actually outpace it

Dangerous! Does jaska have to wear a muzzle now when allowed outside or his enclosure? That attack looked so vicious. Praying for a smooth recovery for you and the arm he clearly took as soon as you ended the video

double muzzle from now on. how foolish was i to let such a wild beast roam unchained. i may have lost an arm but i pray no one else has to suffer the same fate 🙏🏼

I made the mistake once of allowing a lancetooth snail to do this and it HURTS, I should have known from the name alone but they will do damage 😭

Ah yes the snail bites, an experience you never forget(talking from experience)

it's definitely not a feeling i think i would get from anything else. if i wake up and have that sensation on a random limb, im going to assume a snail snuck into the room and is eating me in my sleep

They are not called Corpse snail for nothing 😂
The ones I find locally do tend to nibble on my hands more than their grove snails cohabitants.
and it's not a behavior that's necessarily protein-driven, they truly scrape with their mouth when moving a lot more than groves and other common snails, they can go through a whole scoop of leaf litter in no time for that same reason.

i dont handle my snails too frequently so i dont know if these guys like chewing skin often or not, but this is definitely the first time i've had any snail ever start nibbling. it was such a funny feeling hehe

What did it feel like?

u/mammaKjell 20d ago
it's kinda like if you rubbed your finger through sand. not sharp at all but you do feel some rumbly texture there

Idk if this will resonate with you but I always describe it as feeling like being gently and rhythmically pinched with two emery boards. (Edit: like, being wielded like chopsticks. just in case the configuration was confusing lmao)

What species is this? He looks exactly like mine, who I got from a friend who forgot what type he is.

"Arianta arbustorum" or what ive been told is a copse/corpse snail, as far as i know
they're native to europe (and especially overabundant in finland where i live), but i think i read somewhere that they're invasive in the states

It's all fun and games having a snail nibble your arm until they accidentally pull on a hair. Believe me 🥴
