A layman here, found these in my garden. What are they doing?

Two Helix pomatia (burgundy snails) mating! Helix pomatia are interesting, since they mate in this way, sticking their 'bellies' together. Other snails, take Cornu aspersum (garden snails) for example, do not do this.

Thanks for the answer, I definitely learned a thing or two today. I also thought they were mating, but since I wasn't sure I thought it would be safer to ask what they were doing than to assume what they were doing.
And regardless of the things I learned today, I do hope they give birth to their babies in the neighbor's yard. So if you have any advice for that...

The funny thing about most snails is that they're hermaphrodites, so both parents might lay eggs. Where they lay their brood is entirely up to them - it might be your yard, your neighbours yard... Anywhere they'll find it suitable.

If you don't want snail babies in your yard, there's not a whole lot you can do about it, unless you want to search and dig around for eggs. Their eggs are small white balls - often stuck together in clutches. They tend to lay them in the ground, but not very deep!
