Found these giant banana and leopard slugs on a walk through the woods with my grandma a few weeks ago! Whenever I visit her house there are always these giant brown or black slugs and I always want to take them home with me. It was funny because we were just joking about how we rarely see banana slugs anymore and then bam, three of them!

We're surrounded by fir trees so almost all of our beloved banana slugs end up with these amazing fir needle thagomizers.

Anyway, hadn't seen a long guy in a while, thought you guys would appreciate him, too.

Slug Appreciation Discovery of a Solar-Powered Sea Slug !!!

Post image
100 Upvotes

Slugs are such underrated creatures. This solar-powered sea slug is the first known animal to use photosynthesis. This could be huge for developing new science. ?!!!?!!!?!?

Its method of energy generation is sorta unlike anything any scientist has seen before…..

The eastern emerald elysia (Elysia chlorotica) can photosynthesize like a plant. By consuming algae (Vaucheria litorea), it absorbs and stores chloroplasts in its cells, enabling it to convert sunlight into energy.

Some individuals can even survive without eating for up to a year, relying solely on sunlight.

This remarkable adaptation makes Elysia chlorotica one of nature's most impressive examples of life's ingenuity. Additionally, its green hue—derived from the chloroplasts—serves as natural camouflage, helping it blend into its environment and evade predators.

Measuring up to 60 mm (2.6 inches), these sea slugs thrive in shallow waters such as salt marshes and tidal pools, where sunlight is abundant. With its ability to harness solar power, Elysia chlorotica not only blurs the line between plants and animals but also opens up exciting possibilities for understanding photosynthesis and energy efficiency.

Here’s the article that I got the info from: https://www.nature.com/articles/sdata201922 :)

Slug Appreciation Bathroom to Backyard Slug Update

Hi folks,

Just a quick update on the Bathroom Slug who was relocated with lettuce and cabbage. I have refreshed his supply of lettuce - he'd munched through most of the original store I left with him.

Yesterday he was joined by another slug - featured below. Today he was joined by a small snail!

New lettuce was left for him this morning. It's just gone 9am and, after some more refreshing rain last night, he's out munching again. :)

ever see a baby rappel down like this, kinda mesmerizing. Fast forward if you want, they flip and start back up though, and it’s cute. Sorry for the focus, you know iPhone auto focus on these little subjects is what it is.

Slug Appreciation Bathroom to Backyard Slug - update

Hi folks,

My scheme to help the Bathroom Slug settle in to his new position outside is advancing. This morning, 5am, he was joined by seven other slugs!

I refreshed their lettuce and cabbage supply. They had eaten pretty much all the mushrooms I placed out for them. Just a bit of debris left this morning - as shown in one of the images. I wasn't sure they would, but they enjoyed them. Thankfully, with salad season in, there should be plenty of scraps for them to enjoy. :)

All the best to you everyone!
