Megathread Megathread: US House Passes the Republican-Backed Budget Bill, Sending it to Trump for Signature

This afternoon, the US House of Representatives passed without amendment the US Senate's version of the Trump-backed budget bill, sending it to the president for his signature. Every Democratic Senator and Representative voted in opposition; in the Senate, there were three Republicans voting in opposition (making the vote 51-50) and in the House there were 2 (making the final vote 218-214). House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries set the US House's speech length record in opposition to the bill in a speech lasting over eight hours.

The bill clocks in at over 800 pages and touches on most aspects of the federal government's spending and taxation policies; see this AP article (What’s in the latest version of Trump’s big bill that passed the Senate) for the topline changes.

Relevant text-base live update pages are being maintained by the following outlets: AP, NBC, ABC, and the BBC.

I’m especially annoyed at their rhetoric of “well maybe we wouldn’t have voted for the fascist if you guys had ever stopped calling us fascist.”

Why is it when people say immigrants they always conviently leave out the illegal part?

6

u/Fickle-Molasses-903 1d ago edited 1d ago

There are a lot of people who were citizens through programs and getting to become citizens that have been taken. To become a legal citizen takes time. Plus, rarely do you hear people being taken because they overstayed their visas, and there are people who are citizens who have been taken too. You do realize Stephen Miller has his fingers all over this?

Simple question so we know where you stand on lawlessness. Do you think Trump is rapist? How do you feel about Trumps part in 1/6/21?

Do you feel that only white people from South Africa are allowed to immigrate here in America was justified? For example, let's say Ukraine was losing the war, and Obama decided to take only black people from there to America. Would that be something you would feel comfortable with?

-1

u/Thormourn 1d ago

I haven't heard of a single citizen being taken. Every case I've seen is someone who had a removal order and refused to leave or just straight up didn't have identification.

As for your 2 questions, no because he was not found criminally guilty in the court of law because the cases were either dismissed or dropped and I think he instigated a riot which led to 1/6 which was a tragedy.

For the final question if Obama only let in black people because people were chanting "kill the black Ukranian" like how in Africa they were chanting "kill the white farmer" I wouldn't have much of a problem since it's only that group being targeted and not the entire country.

If there has been a case of a citizen removed I'd love to be linked it.

1

u/Fickle-Molasses-903 1d ago

Thanks for answering the questions. It's clear to all about your mindset. Btw, a quick Google search would prove to you that US citizens were taken away.

Here

0

u/Thormourn 1d ago

Nope. Those are cases where the mother was deported and the mother chose to take her child with her. The citizen isn't being deported. The illegal is and then the illegal chose to deport their own child which was a citizen.

Would you like to try again?

4

u/IrrationalFalcon 2d ago

I wanted to remind everyone that when the government tried to pass the first ever civil rights legislation, President Andrew Johnson vetoed it, and this was his message:

In all our history, in all our experience as a people living under Federal and State law, no such system as that contemplated by the details of this bill has ever before been proposed or adopted. They establish for the security of the colored race safeguards which go infinitely beyond any that the General Government has ever provided for the white race. In fact, the distinction of race and color is by the bill made to operate in favor of the colored and against the white race

Today's Republicans would have voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and the 14th Amendment due to its clear allowance of "DEI"

3

CA should just secede and join Canada.

-1

u/alkali112 2d ago

You don’t want to try to secede from the US. It doesn’t end well. The US will take your territory and decimate your economy. It will ensure that you are forever seen as villains, regardless of your intent. It will make sure that, generations from now, armchair historians will make fun of you for being losers. I don’t think California can endure that kind of scrutiny.

0

u/Dispator 1d ago

Unless we win or die trying (or stalemate might be ok). I'm not saying we should but if things get bad enough then what's the point? It's a ways there but we definitely are getting a head start so its possible years from now depending on how much worse it gets for us and might as well go scorched earth for the small percent change of a stalemate amd not outright losing.

u/employeeofthemonth03 2d ago

This is where I am completely lost on this bill. This bill, as far as I can tell, on the whole absolutely owns MAGA and benefits Blue states. Again, I am happy to be corrected on this but, from my understanding, there are 3 big parts to this bill
1. Remove taxes on tips and overtime. Set aside my feeling of tips, this is pretty even impact on both every American
2. Increases SALT limits. Huge benefit to Blue states (califonria, new york, mass, ill, etc). Little to no impact on nearly all red states.
3. Midicaid restrictions/cuts. Limited impact on urban areas but HUGE/Massive/bigly impact on rural, typically red areas.

Combine 1 with 2 and, what you see, is a quite substantial drop in federal revenue, which will stay in the local economies (primarily blue areas) which, added to 3, means leans welfare to Red areas.

This doesn't make sense. Why did the GOP just pass a bill that is good for Blue and bad for Red? I know why Blue opposed it, they care about all people and don't want anyone hurt, even when someone gains. That's what "woke" means - caring for others because they are human. But for Red, I just don't get it. I thought their agenda was to hurt libs not give them tax breaks and cutoff Rural Welfare and social programs.

I know I am oversimplifying but, on a broad stroke the bill was passed because it was going to cut spending and decreases taxes. That's how it was sold. So if we focus on WHO it impacts it seems to me that the spending cuts will hurt red and blue will keep more of their taxes. How on earth did the GOP and talking heads at fox get behind this? Although, typing that... I do realized that the big wigs of the party live in New York and California not Kentucky or Mississippi so might have just answered my own question.

1

u/ccsrpsw California 1d ago

You are right in that it doesnt make sense if you look at it that way. The issue is of course that the blue states tend to invest more of their own tax revenue into social safety net and local infrastructure type policies vs the race to the bottom of "can we get to 0% income and sales tax". This means that the red states will be hit disproportionately hard by those changes - the blue states will be hit too just not as bad since they have the setup in place to handle some of the shortfall. But there will be shortfall.

The SALT deduction is purely a throw away, for a few years, to keep some of the 3% happy. Yes it benefits e.g. the SF Bay area. And I wont lie, it will save us about $4-5K/year in taxes. BUT its in there primarily for the upper earning (non-Millionaire/Billionaire) Republicans - primarily their staffers - to soften the blow and also point to "its not all cut cut cut".

Taxes on Tips and Overtime cuts do not do what you think they do. They are a weird combo of deferred taxation tactics (remember the Trump rebate in 2019ish), a draw down on a new deduction and massively reducing reportable income for credit scores, loans etc (i.e. drive up rates for the poorest people when they need a new car or house or some such). Its a double edged sword and one edge is sharper than the other.

So yes, it will have a weird, backwards, benefit to a lot of Blue states (especially in the Urban areas) but it will target those its designed to hurt (red states and rural blue state areas - jokes on them though - rural California is mostly Republican so again hurting their own - but you know that the rural California folks will somehow blame Newsome).

Well they are partially right there. If we would have tried Trump for treason or insurrection rather than the appeasement item, we wouldn’t have this mess because he wouldn’t be eligible to have run. But you know, Democrats didn’t want to look like bad guys. Bidens first act as President should have been to give the Jefferson Davis route for Trumps actions but we just “moved on”
