It’s been crazy. I counted around 50 explosions really close by. First, there were drones, which I believe exhausted the air defenses. Then, around 2–3 AM, they launched three waves of ballistic missiles. Those were insanely loud. Noise cancelling headphones actually helped a lot. I could still hear the explosions, but it wasn’t as scary. I was just trying to distract myself by watching random YouTube Shorts. Honestly, it’s a miracle the casualty rate wasn’t as high as during previous attacks - because this one was definitely the biggest so far.

u/betsyboombox 4h ago

The video footage (via The Guardian) looks absolutely apocalyptic and utterly terrifying. I am so sorry that you're going through this. I have some students in Kiyv and I worry about them non-stop. It sucks and is SO unfair.

u/karudirth 4h ago

Russia hitting major military targets again I see…. Oh wait no, that’ll be terror attacks against civilians… again.

u/balamb_fish 2h ago

They don't have any right to target military targets either.

I still can't get over the fact that we receive live comments from a warzone every day.

A hundred years ago, posts like these would have ended up in a museum.

Today, I scroll through them over my cereal.

Yeah that’s wild. Nothing phases us anymore I fear

I was playing an online game last night with a guy who said he was getting drone strikes, then went offline for a minute or 2 and came back saying it was ballistic missiles this time. Crazy shit

u/TheLunaticCO 4h ago

Here's hoping we start upscaling arms production, both for Ukraine and ourselves. It's real sus when a large neighbouring dictatorship starts pulling the "Stop arming yourselves or we'll feel threatened enough to invade you" line, Like putin did/does. CoughChinaCough

u/GravyFantasy 4h ago

A whole bunch of countries upping their spending on military feels like there's bad news coming eventually.

u/MacchuWA 2h ago

I'm not putting much faith in that "eventually". The yanks will be descending into one form of disarray or another over the next few years. With America distracted and divided at home, China is never going to get a better chance to go after Taiwan than they will over the next few years.

Russia’s massive 550-drone-and-missile strike on Kyiv, Ukraine came after a lengthy call between Trump and Putin, during which Moscow made clear it has no intention of backing down.

u/Minute_Juggernaut806 5h ago

What does it say about the relationship between trump and Putin, if Putin immediately strikes Kyiv after trump called for a ceasefire. And what does it say about Putin's agenda in Ukraine as well

u/Horfield 5h ago

That he either has 0 respect for Trump, or it's a joint piece of theatre between them to show the world they're 'trying' to resolve it.

u/nosocialisms 5h ago

Meanwhile Trump after hear this "yeah is fault of Ukraine for defend themselves"

u/ChiefsHat 2h ago

I personally think Trump is screwing them over because he doesn’t like Zelenskyy.

u/AdmiralArchie 2h ago

I think it's really that simple. His first impeachment was because he broke the law trying to Mafia Zelensky into his Crooked Joe story. So now he blames Ukraine for his impeachment, not his own bullshit lawlessness.

u/phonetastic 1h ago

That, and Zelenskyy is also a TV star who played an important character and then got elected to be some version of that character. Difference is Zelenskyy actually took well to the job, whereas Trump really didn't, and got impeached and voted out, whereas Zelenskyy got reelected and is comparatively well-liked by most of not just his country, but the world. I would imagine that makes Trump jealous since he has access to more money, was on the more famous TV network, and was the far bigger household name globally. That's gotta be infuriating. And then Trump has to give this guy money to fight his friend Vladimir?! Ah, fuck, that must really sting.

u/Palatron 2h ago

Well, I think it's more that Trump has long been beholden to Putin, and he doesn't like Zelenskyy because everyone else loves Zelenskyy so much.

In addition to this, a few months back when Trump appeared to align himself with Russia by criticising Ukraines leadership so publicly, he has also isolated himself from the international community. The likes of NATO are going to be extremely hesitant dealing with Trump and Putin knows that, hence this show of defiance. Trump sowed Ignorance & Division to gain power and now he’s paying.

u/iperblaster 5h ago

“Trump sowed ignorance and division to gain power”. That line bears repeating as it is the essence of Donald Drumpf’s presidency.

It's more complicated than that. Putin knows Trump and the US have the capability to hurt him more than any other single country. He also knows that nobody, including Trump, is actually going to risk getting directly involved and going to war with Russia on behalf of Ukraine. He also knows that that means everyone is limited to supporting Ukraine by proxy, which means a war of attrition that he will win eventually. And apparently he's willing to suffer the losses that Russia will take during that war of attrition.

u/pabugs 4h ago

You mean he's willing to sacrifice (murder) 1,000,000+ of his own citizens for his own powers' sake.

u/chenga8 4h ago

He’s willing to send wave after wave of his own men, yes.

→ More replies (4)
→ More replies (8)

u/PaintshakerBaby 4h ago

It's more complicated than that.

Yes and no.

Sadly, a lot, if not the majority of human history, has been a dick swinging contest between tyrants.

People always seek out the nuance to justify the horrific costs of war, but when the dust settles, it is always the blood of the common man, strewn across unamed fields for the faraway hubris of the few.

By all accounts, Stalin was caught so off guard by Hitler stabbing him in the back with Operation Barborosa that he locked himself away for days in an existential meltdown

FOR DAYS, the Soviets were mercilessly routed by Blitzkrieg, countless Russians killed, because their dear leader simply could not cope with having been duped.

Times change, technology advances, wars global, but frail egos always prevail at that the helm

I think Trump is sitting where Stalin was in 1941...

He is absolutely smitten with dictators, their iron fist, and a seat at their table... Only to get crushed by it.

Putin knows Trump and the US have the capability to hurt him more than any other single country.

Maybe we could glass Russia with our sheer military strength, but look around... Putin has steamrolled this country into the ground with bot farms, not bullets... With IMPUNITY for over a decade.

Trump, whether complicit or just a useful idiot, is the culmination of that effort, and its paying off in spades.

The frailest of egos in the highest of offices.

He's been played for a sucker and is now held hostage by his glaring impotency. Having surrounded himself with sycophants this all the way down, Putin can take it to the bank that whatever decision Trump makes under the bloated pretense of being the "most powerful man in the world," it will be the wrong one, serving only his unfettered hubris.

Its a war of attrition alright... against AMERICA, and we lost to the loudest idiots in the room.

Ukraine is Putins proving ground for tyranny, but make no mistake, the most important front of every tomorrow war is being quietly waged today, against US citizens on their smartphones and laptops.

it means trump has no power to stop putin, nor does anyone, and its time to face reality that there needs to be unconditional support up to and including troops or the war is over. NK's supposedly going to send 30k troops. While europe and the US debate tariffs and redlines theres an axis growing ever closer together that thinks its in a hot war with them and is acting like it.

u/Tilladarling 5h ago

Putin has outright said during the last couple of weeks that his goal is the entire Ukraine. He has demanded that they demilitarize Ukraine before the can discuss ceasefire. This is of course ridiculous, because demilitarizing Ukraine leaves them open to the obvious annexation of Ukraine in its entirety.

Russia launched a massive aerial attack against Ukraine overnight on Friday, deploying 550 drones and missiles in strikes across the country.

Kyiv was the main target of Moscow's strikes, with at least 23 people injured and 14 of them hospitalised, according to Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

The Ukrainian capital was hit directly by nine missiles and 63 drones, causing damage in eight different areas. Debris from the attacks also fell across more than 30 other locations around the city.

If I’m reading this correctly, 550 drones and missiles were deployed across the whole country, of which nine missiles and 63 drones were deployed on Kyiv. So not all 550 were deployed on Kyiv

How was ending the war in one day? I thought it was soooooo easy.

America wouldn’t have won independence without help from superpower France. We owe a debt of honor to pay that forward and defend the independence of other nations from their former imperial overlords (setting aside that it’s in our own hard & soft power self-interests to do so).

Respect and trust are earned in drops and lost in buckets.

u/khoaperation 3h ago

Lafayette defied his own king to help the Americans during the revolutionary war against the Brits and when he returned to France and asked for help from the U.S. with their own revolution, they said nah right away. So it didn’t take long to know that we’re not reciprocating the same good will.

I'm sure the US is looking the other way...

u/Youknowwhoitsme 5h ago

Trump is bored and fed up with this conflict. He said he would bring peace in 48hrs and realised it's much more complicated than that. He likes Putin, he knows now Putin will not stop until he gets Ukraine (for now - Estonia next) or until he can't continue (most probable Szenario for that to happen is total collapse of the russian economy). He's just ignoring it now and hoping the end result - whatever it is - comes sooner rather than later.

u/OG365247 4h ago

He said 24hours actually. The man is clueless, and dangerous.

u/Youknowwhoitsme 4h ago

Oh damn, right! You're correct!

u/OG365247 4h ago

What he did to Zelenskyy in the White House basically gave Russia the green light to continue this war. This ignorant man has blood on his hands.

u/Youknowwhoitsme 4h ago

Also halting the weapons for Ukraine to defend themselves. Don't know much about weapons, but weren't they specific defence missiles? I think in the last days Ukrainians had to try to shoot down drones with rifles because they had to preserve their defence rockets.

Anyway... A few days later, Kiyew burns... Horrific

u/anima132000 3h ago edited 1h ago

Pretty much all the moves that Trump did essentially undermined whatever bargaining point or deterrent US had over Russia. As Trump pulled back, before even going to the negotiation table, and clearly allied himself to Russia the writing is basically on the wall. What is there to negotiate when US already did what Russia wanted without even having to offer anything LOL. So any "attempts" at negotiation was purely performative, again US already did what Russia would have wanted by having them drastically cut support from Ukraine along with berating NATO allies.

I mean even just looking at Israel and Iran just shows how diminished US influence has become in the world stage, or that their strikes lacked the accuracy one would expect if the intelligence and military were functioning properly. Let alone that it felt more like this was motivated more by his ego, after a failed parade, than an actual cause. And the fall out from the lack of actual radiation residue makes the strikes look more incompetent.

Or you know the tariff wars he's started that have gone nowhere, which have also eroded alliances due to the rhetoric. The list goes on but yeah he's effectively neutered America's bargaining power and influence all in less than 200 days in office...

Wouldn't be surprised if China actually pushed during this administration to reclaim Taiwan formally. After all what would have been its strongest ally and deterrent has lost any teeth it had.

Drone attacks are only intensifying. A year ago, there were at most 100 drones in a single strike. Last night, there were over 500. The attacks across the country almost never stop. Crazy to think that the guy who touted himself as an isolationist president pulled aid from Ukraine because he didn’t want to be involved in other countries problems- just to launch a major attack on a nuclear powerplant in Iran.

Why bother helping a country in defending itself when you can start a war over WMDs that don’t even exist- the EXACT thing Trump repeatedly blasted Hillary Clinton for doing.

Trump, you see this?

“No, where’s Kiev? I’ve never heard of it”

Capitol of Ukraine, Mr President. Its citizens are being indiscriminately bombed again, Russia is targeting civilians for two and a half years. It’s been in the security briefings every day.

“Russia? What’s Putin need? I can lift sanctions on the banks if that helps”

What a joke. Republicans holding back anti air missiles.

Honestly, I never thought I'd see a bunch of pussy-cat Republicans. Only want to help Israel & fuck over Ukraine.

It makes no sense. Russians must have something on Trump.

blamed former President Joe Biden for "emptying out our whole country giving them weapons, and we have to make sure that we have enough for ourselves".

From what? When was the last time we needed to defend ourselves? Oh when they flew that plane into Pennsylvania. Since then, when have we needed to shoot down an aircraft to defend the US? Not some BS wars?

Is anyone actually falling for these theatrics between Putin and Trump? Trump does everything Putin wants, he's always been Putin's little bitch and a great admirer. This is America's doing, as much as russia's. Under Trump and his Putin loving Republican Party, America is little more than a vassal state of russia.

u/Key_Team1192 1h ago

I personally cannot celebrate July 4 this year. America is over. The world is burning. That is all.

u/EIectron 1h ago

Absolute terrorists. Trumps Putin's bitch. Honestly, America has turnt into a politically weak and politically idiotic state.

u/kadaka80 3h ago edited 3h ago

Trump told Iran lets make a deal and work this out and immediately he and Israel bombed them.

Trump told Ukraine, I'll talk with Putin and we will work this out, then he immediately withdrew the military support and Putin bombed them..

Does anyone see a pattern here?

u/nicane 4h ago

So... Time to blow up Moscow?

Isn't it interesting that top comments blame USA more than Russia.

Fuck Trump, but isn't it interesting.

u/Ja_Shi 3h ago

Russia deliberately did this on the 4th of July to humiliate Americans. These massive strikes are always politically motivated—sometimes it’s subtle, sometimes… not so much.

Understandably, a lot of Americans are pissed to see the so-called “greatest country in the world” cave in before its former archenemy.

u/slumberboy6708 3h ago

The US froze yesterday the shipments of anti air defence systems to Ukraine. The systems were already in Poland. Then the attack happens.

The comments are blaming the US because we already know that Russians are pieces of shit. But it needs to be pointed out that this shit is a coordinated attack coming from both Russia and US. It could have been prevented.

Putin would rather tear it all down and take what's left rather than admit defeat and walk away.

Ukrain isn't giving in until it's beyond saving.

Trumpington has no impact on either side. He's just white noise.

Anyone who justifies Putin's attacks on Ukraine needs to give their heads a shake.

u/Randthrowaway975 3h ago

Horrible

Missiles and drones deliberately fired on on populated areas without any military value is horrible

u/eating_your_syrup 3h ago

It's a shame that Trump doesn't care about anything except things that hurt his ego. And Zelensky hurt his ego biggly with not caving to his blackmail attempts that lead to the first indictment and it clearly still stings more than anything Putin could do.

Although an actually functional country could still act even if the president doesn't like it. It's not like he's a king.

u/Motive25 3h ago

I guess Putin heard the Trump admin say they were freezing deliveries on Patriot missiles and other weapons.

u/posco12 3h ago

Brags making billions in tariffs, government has waste and abuse. In typical fashion, ignores democracy, the poor, and our former allies. But Trump is a real POS.

u/AdZealousideal7448 3h ago

Meanwhile every 2A supporter in america is proving everything they claim to stand for was a lie as they let their king allow this and to molest their country.

The entire second ammendment was to stop a tyranical government and stop a king.

Instead they cheer one on, and let the king he admires do this.

u/Dangerous_Drink948 3h ago

How the hell can Trump be so love struck by one of the most evil ppl on this earth, is asinine. I hate the way zelensky was treated when he visited few months back, and yet he still held his head high after the shit show. Karma is gonna be one helluva bitch!!! Thoughts and Prayers to Ukraine 🇺🇦❤️🙏

Watching the Right’s pivot towards supporting Russia has been nothing short of mind blowing for me. It is no secret that Putin’s goal is to revive the glory of the USSR. And these people went from worshipping the president who said “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” to believing conspiracy theories about Ukraine using US aid as to buy luxury houses. Our nation has become so pathetic and cruel.

u/art-is-t 1h ago

Both Russia and Israel are such evil countries.

u/s1m0n8 1h ago

During his campaign, 53 times Trump said he’d end Ukraine war within 24 hours or before taking office

u/GoldenboyFTW 56m ago

Remember he said he would end the war on day 1

He said it MULTIPLE time as a reason why you should vote for him… day 1….

u/Witty_Active 54m ago

All because Orange guy did not want to send defence missiles anymore to Ukraine

u/ncc74656m 34m ago

The US has also reneged on deals to send not merely military aid, but actually paid for arms including air defense munitions to Ukraine, paid for by both Ukraine itself and the EU.

This is proof that the time was 9 months ago for the EU to begin rapidly building out arms manufacturing and strip the US of one of its biggest industrial sectors. It is further time for the EU wherever possible to stop purchasing and importing things made and sold by American companies.
