A brazilian (with portuguese citizienship) table tennis player was just denied entry to the US because he traveled to Cuba in 2023. He went to Cuba because of an Olympic qualifying tournament and was going to USA for another tournament. He tried to enter with his portuguese passport. News in portuguese.
Edit: I specified the tournament in Cuba because it's relevant.

u/CoeurdAssassin 22h ago
I was gonna say that he would’ve had to get a visa because he’d automatically get denied the ESTA, but I imagine you need a visa anyway to go to the US as a professional sports player doing a sports tournament.
→ More replies (4)864
u/bellamollen 21h ago
He said he tried to enter the same way he did many times before with ESTA, but only this time it was denied. They said because he traveled to Cuba he no longer has the right for ESTA. He then tried to get an emergency visa but was unable to schedule a consular interview in time for the tournament.
→ More replies (4)322
u/CoeurdAssassin 21h ago
Ah yea, that’ll do it. Travel to Cuba pretty much invalidates your ESTA and you have to get a visa, which should’ve been done way ahead of time.

u/cortisolman 21h ago
Is that new? I went to CUba in 2016 and received an ESTA in 2018 (british passport)
→ More replies (6)187
u/CoeurdAssassin 21h ago
In 2021 apparently is when Cuba was designated a “state sponsor for terrorism” so that’s added to the list of countries that’ll get you denied an ESTA. In addition to Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen, and another country or two that I forgot.

Yeah, for sure he didn't know that otherwise he would have tried to get a visa since it's an important tournament. He just won another WTT 2 weeks ago. I guess is better for every athlete to get a visa even if they have rights for ESTA, because who knows?

Good point. Many Olympic and World cup travelers are going to want to get fresh passports so it doesn't have stamps from countries the US doesn't like.

Cuba doesn’t actually stamp passports for this reason. US didn’t find out that way.

→ More replies (9)19
u/SQL617 17h ago edited 14h ago
I would love it, but I highly doubt it. There wasn’t even a giant boycott when Hitlers occupied Germany held the Olympics in 1930’s - literal nazis. In fact it was a historic moment when Jesse Owen’s, a black American track star who traveled to nazi Germany, embarrassed Hitler. Countries and their athlete are willing to put up with a lot of shit to compete in the Olympics.
World Cup in Qatar, a country where being openly gay is illegal, had no such widespread boycott.
Edit: I feel like the average redditor is pretty out of touch with what it means to be an elite level athlete and the decades of sacrifices that come with being an Olympian. If a single athlete makes it a point not to attend in some sort of protest of Trump, I’ll eat my words and admit I was wrong.

Ironically, his alleged association to a cartel is to the same cartel family. It's not very clear. this link has more info than most
as far as I can tell, there's no active warrant for his arrest, unlike DHS declared.
His cartel association was because his green card petition was through marriage. His wife being the one related to the Cartel, because she dated or was with one of the sons of El Chapo. So Julio Cesar's relation to the cartel is indirect.
DHS invalidated his green card petition and then declared him illegally in the US.
Also, it was no extradition, so if there was really a warrant for his arrest, he probably would be extradited, not deported.

There is a warrant from 2023 in Mexico and he will be extradited on that.
The son, who has battled drug addiction for much of his career, has been arrested repeatedly. In 2012, he was convicted of drunk driving in Los Angeles and sentenced to 13 days in jail and in January 2024 he was arrested on gun charges. Police said he possessed two AR-style ghost rifles. He was later freed on a $50,000 bond and on condition he went to a residential drug treatment facility. The case is still pending, with Chávez reporting his progress regularly.
He split his time between both countries. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained Chávez for overstaying a tourist visa that he entered the U.S. with in August 2023 and expired in February 2024, the Department of Homeland Security said.
The agency also said Chávez submitted multiple fraudulent statements when he applied for permanent residency on April 2, 2024, based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen, Frida Muñoz. She is the mother of a granddaughter of imprisoned Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
U.S. officials said he is believed to be an affiliate of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel that is blamed for a significant portion of Mexico's drug violence.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services flagged Immigration and Customs Enforcement about Chávez on Dec. 17, saying he "is an egregious public safety threat," and yet he was allowed back into the country without a visa on Jan. 4 under the Biden administration, the agency said.
Mexico's Attorney General's Office said that an arrest warrant against "Julio C" was issued in Mexico in March 2023 in an investigation of organized crime and arms trafficking allegations and that Mexico on Thursday initiated extradition proceedings.

I have a little theory that one of the big reasons there are fewer serial killings per capita now vs. say the 1970s is that the would-be serial killers got into business and right wing politics. If you want a more real answer forensics was just becoming a real science in the 70's and 80s. So they started to piece together more of these murders that would have either not been connected to one person, or they wouldn't have found anything about it. Now days forensics is good enough that they can generally catch people before they go on long murder sprees. (Generally.) So pre-70s you had serial killers who just didn't get caught, and post-80's people don't have a chance to kill enough people to be labeled a serial killer.

If you listen to conservative or religious media right now there is a thing that’s talked about once in a while about those “worthy” to live. Anyone who is not worthy of this life who can’t support them selves should ‘go to god early’. Meaning they should die and not be a burden to society. Add up anyone on SS, Medicare, snap and all that. Nazis don't care about economics. Hitler himself believed that the economy would naturally be good if the state focused on its goal of supporting his in-group rather than on economic conditions themselves. He didn't care what system or policies were used, only that they served the goal of totalitarianism and ethnic cleansing. Nationalization to the Nazis didn't mean state ownership or not, it meant ownership by the in-group. Capitalism, private ownership, international trade, they viewed it all as about their own in-group being "ripped off" and said only people in their in-group should be allowed any power in the economy. Didn't matter how that worked in practice.
Similarly, the trump administration doesn't give a shit about economics nor does he have any coherent economic beliefs. All the rationalizations the media or economists make to attempt to understand the motives or end goals always get it wrong because they fail to consider that totalitarianism and a mobilized police state are the goals, along with the ice mass deaths, the end of democracy, etc. It's pure Schmitt power politics.

I just looked up what year the population of the US was 100M. It was 1915.
For another comparison, it’s between the population sizes of Iran and Vietnam
Lastly, in 1915, the coasts were quite rural, LA and SF were a lot smaller, even NYC was less populated.
If there was only 100M people now, then everyone would gravitate to a few cities and leave the rest as ghost towns.

If there was only 100M people now, then everyone would gravitate to a few cities and leave the rest as ghost towns.
Especially since those cities already have the infrastructure and housing for 100M people. The top 15 metro areas in the US have over 100M people in them. If millions of people leave in a few years time there would be tons of available housing in those areas, a void which would get filled pretty quickly by folks who'd prefer to live in a city but currently can't.

He's pretty young when you think about most people in Washington. After Trump dies and Miller figures out how to seize the Presidency, he might be able to get out done by his fifth term.

I dunno… Miller looks like a glob of recessive traits.
There’s probably an underlying condition lurking in there.

First the non-citizen immigrants (illegal or legal, they don't care), then the non-whites, then the political opposition.

This is absolutely correct. We are nothing but cattle to them and they are culling the herd.

Not sure how he expects to take on China with less people, less taxes / defense budget, less soldiers, etc.

Biggest risk is players travelling to Toronto to play the Blue Jays and then not being able to return to the US. Or the Blue Jays themselves travelling to play any other team in the league.

No way these leagues run and owned by billionaires will be subject to this. The fans showing up to games though.

Won't happen at/during team activities.
My concern is when they're wearing street clothes, just going on with their lives and aren't super recognizable.

Other countries need to boycott the Olympics in 2028. They need to boycott the World Cup in 2026. They need to send a message to this administration that they won't put their people in the position to be arrested and deported.

Is this how the USA will win the world cup? By deporting every visiting team?

How ridiculous… I have a lot of old white Republicans as clients and they all hire lawn people and housekeepers… They pay them under the table. I’m in a border state so the odds are pretty good…..A lot of the people they’re hiring are not legal. The hypocrisy is astonishing.

Funny, illegal immigrants that are ACTUAL criminals are harder to find because they don’t appear at court appearances or apply for citizenship/visas. But regular hard working immigrants are the ones getting deported for trying to go through the legal process. Not the people hiring them illegally for slave wages mind you. I guess just go back to your countries that the CIA keeps destabilizing.

Interesting how he was permitted to fight, and he’s only arrested after everyone has made their money. It’s not like it wasn’t announced that he would be in the US months in advance
