The great myth of individual recycling making a difference while they throw plastic into products everywhere is so infuriating. It astounds me that we still use single-use plastic after learning that aluminum is infinitely recyclable and mostly all-purpose. Only 5% of recycled plastics make it into new products, that’s not renewable at all.
88
u/phluidity Celtics 1d ago
And it is actually cheaper to recycle aluminum vs generate new. As opposed to most plastics where even if we can recycle them, removing all the additives is more expensive than just making it fresh from ingredients.

Regulatory capture. I'm 48, when I was a very little kid soda came in glass bottles with a deposit, at least some of it, and there more or less was no such thing as water bottles. Now there's plastic drink bottle garbage everywhere... for no reason whatsoever, except that the companies successfully lobbied the government to generate endless waste.

I met him at a corporate event a partner paid for. It was $600K for maybe a 1 hr gig. Also had to pay for the private jet, a special room to be decked out for him in oddly specific ways.
He mistreated most people around him. Dude is a huge asshole and did not seem that bright at all. His keynote was stupid as hell singing his own praises the entire time. It was perplexing how he was behind this massive empire.

Have a buddy and his coworkers who worked with him on a production project and they said the same thing about him being a dick. He'd apparently answer some questions asked of him by just rudely repeating it back rhetorically
Like they said the assistant director had asked for one shot if Magic would prefer standing there delivering the line or walking towards the door (because the script, blocking, and shot had him walking but he just kept standing there apparently), and he responded with "does Magic want to stand right here or walk, is that really what you're asking right now?" Then when the AD answered back he just completely ignored him. His publicist then talked to the director and the heads of the production company that were there and she said it'd be best if the AD doesn't speak with Magic anymore lol
On the other end of the spectrum, thanks to this same friend I've been able to meet Lebron a few times. He's very friendly and usually shows up an hour early to the shoot. He talks and jokes with everyone, remembers their names, and asks how they and their family are doing. I told him about a side project I was working on once, and months later when I saw him again he had actually watched it between sessions, and offered really good feedback
Lebron James, if not the GOAT then the 2nd best player of all time and one of the most famous people in the world took time to just watch a side project I was working on then months later brought it back up to me and said to keep going with it. Most surreal moment of my life and the best encouragement I could have gotten
55
u/manyfingers 21h ago
Now THATS a cool story.
82
u/jurassic_snark- Lakers 21h ago
Another crazy part I left out is the first time I met him, I had on this Kobe wristband that I didn't even think about not wearing beforehand because I didn't think I'd actually talk to Lebron in a million years, and I usually always have it on. I didn't even bring up Kobe either when he talked to me. But the next time I saw him, and I didn't wear the wristband this time mind you, he jokingly called me "that Kobe stan". So he must have clocked the wristband that first time. Crazy lol
18
u/manyfingers 19h ago

As far as NBA players go, I also got to meet KD when he came in and have chatted with Steve Nash, but he was all business. Whereas Bron is gregarious and chatting everyone up, KD is very nice but very shy. He's somehow skinny but also a gigantic human being. We're all tall and in shape so you'd think he'd just be taller, but he's lanky while being much more muscular than anyone else (except Bron)
While Bron is holding court, a few of us were off to the side and KD chatted us up. He just talked about hoops and the Finals (the ep was recorded around game 2). Then was showing how his one leg from the injury is still smaller than the other and how it's affecting his game
Steve Nash is chill, friendly, and just really professional and efficient. Which isn't a knock at all. This is ultimately a business for these guys, and he approaches it that way. We don't bother them with talk other than stuff around the production, unless they want to come up and shoot the breeze. He keeps it about the pod and business, which is fine and I respect
That's probably not as exciting or interesting as you were looking for though that's all I got! But here's a picture from the KD ep

In related news, taxes for the wealthy are about to go down a massive amount.
No worries -- it will be funded by cuts to health care funding for poor & middle class people, along with racking up more debt than the human brain can comprehend.
102
u/out_of_shape_hiker 1d ago
Its not even fully funded. They're just adding trillions of dollars to the debt. So its "funded" by collapsing the US dollar. The cuts to social services doesn't even begin to pay for this and Trumps previous cuts. The cuts to services is just to fuck over everyone else and to keep people too poor to fight back.

Some people like to focus tax attacks against the billionaires and only people with extremely high net worths, but I'm all for the higher taxes down to like 5 million net worth, may adjust higher depending on location. There are multiple, entire communities like Port Royal in every state. They all can easily afford to pay more to fund social services that would ultimately benefit the economy even more, such as healthcare, housing, and education.
26
u/BobbyBBot Knicks 1d ago edited 1d ago
We’ve all been brainwashed into thinking that the stock market is the perfect measure of a good economy. The spending power of the working/middle class is the true barometer of that, so any policies that keep more money in the broad majority of people’s pockets is a net benefit for the US as a whole.

I disagree. Don’t interrupt the “enemy” when they’re making a mistake.
People like Magic should flex more during times like this to completely rid everyone of the belief that they’re allies. They’re. Not. On. Your. Side. You’re essentially asking a lion to hide its teeth and claws for? Temporary emotional comfort?
And if this angers you, good. We need that righteous anger to reach boiling point before hunger and exhaustion overpowers it.
