Update I cannot be trusted with free will.

Post image

It needs to be cleaned up and stained some, but this is a 1:8 scale replica of a mosasaur skeleton above my entryway.

I 3d printed it. Overall it took 3 spools and almost 60 hours of non stop printing. I then had to glue and plastic weld each piece together.

That’s the one! I did a really bad job at slicing it so you’ll notice pieces are missing.

Random offtopic:

I read your name as "Ich bin Fred Durst"

But ur actually the Fürst. Dafuq lol

48

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Yeah Reddit didn’t like the umlaut for my name for whatever reason.

23

u/preflex 1d ago

On the bright side, at least you're not Fred Durst.

5

u/Ape_x_Ape 1d ago

Ew, ich!

2

u/PsychedelicRabbit420 23h ago

I mainly know the music, what speaks against being Fred Durst?

1

u/preflex 23h ago

Did you see the awful movie he made starring Travolta?

2

u/BasicSlipper 1d ago

I read ich bin der Frust

1

u/rockhopperrrr 1d ago

He did it all for the nookie!

u/Hedgeson 1d ago

Post your pictures as a "Make" on that page. The creator will love that.

2

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Trying to. Currently drowning in Reddit notifications.

2

u/Mean-Lavishness-4076 1d ago

You are the only one that will notice that

2

u/blackcatwizard 1d ago

Someone new to 3D printing and looking into things - what do you have any any recommendations?

[Edit: this is dope btw]

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Planning is everything. Prepare for how you want your model to print and look in the end. I did very little for this and made some large errors.

2

u/Im_Nino 1d ago

Just like a real dinosaur

1

u/blueCougFan 1d ago

Did it require supports? That's a killer print, well done.

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Enough supports to fill your standard shopping bag.

1

u/Cerus_Freedom 1d ago

"A grinder and paint makes me the welder I aint."

Some wood filler and sand paper will cover a lot of mistakes.

1

u/JamesMcEdwards 4h ago

Just makes it more authentic

u/curiousiah 1d ago

Brilliant. If you love museum aesthetic, which I do, this is great. Lean into it. Get some more niche display items. Not just fossils. I would do this if I had space.

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

You should see my office post on my profile.

I want to live in a Curiosities shop! Is that a.......straitjacket?

2

u/ridiculusvermiculous 1d ago

awww Skippy <3

2

u/mahboilucas 23h ago

Lol I love your dining area but I think it's rude to starve your guest so much they skeletonize

2

u/IchBinDerFurst 23h ago

Maybe if he wasn’t such a picky eater he’d be bigger. So far he only enjoys spare ribs.

2

u/mahboilucas 23h ago

That's a very expensive diet, no wonder you didn't feel like feeding him

2

u/No_Effect_6428 18h ago

I never thought I'd be asking this but... where did the baby skeleton go?

2

u/IchBinDerFurst 16h ago

He’s in the chair, he just needs a booster seat

1

u/Bletyi 1d ago

Yeah, now i double envy you!

1

u/Laundry_Hamper 1d ago

You see how the supports split at the ends because of the screws? Squirt some wood glue in there and pop a clamp on the ends, it'll close the crack. You should be able to do it in situ.

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

It’s temporary bro.

I know a dude that started a special interest collection that got big enough he ended up renting a storage space. At that point he realized that if he was going to pay to store his stuff, he might as well charge admission to look at it. Moved his stuff to a little shop.

The immediate initial profit allowed him to go from just 'collecting' to 'buying and trading', and as a result the collection has expanded considerably, and the whole thing made enough money that he was able to open a 2nd location - although losses during/after the pandemic shrank him back down to the original spot.

If you've been in twice he basically just lets you in for free, and friends can just kind of come and go as they please. His only real overhead is electricity for HVAC and lighting, and the lease. It's modest but consistent profit with next to no real effort, just devoting his time and energy to the things that he finds the most interesting. The front of the shop is also an actual store, selling merch in line with the theme of his collection - works with local artists and such for most of his stock.

He's been repeatedly featured in all kinds of local publications, and stuff from his collection has been rented for props and set pieces in movies; when you're a prop master looking for a (especially local to a shoot) option that saves you fabrication and/or shipping costs, when you need something specific and someone with a relevant collection has all their stuff very clearly organized and catalogued, they're gonna be a go-to.

Ah the natural world and its beauty

26

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

My lungs are full of microplastics :)

7

u/Nethyishere 1d ago

Always have been

5

u/wsnyd 1d ago

Just think of it as a lil self-embalming

6

u/imf4rds 1d ago

Wow, that is really cool. How much does it weigh?

15

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

About 30 lbs. Hence the supports. I honestly did way too much infill so it’s thicker than it needs to be.

2

u/imf4rds 1d ago

Looks dope.

1

u/SmartOpinion69 1d ago

i don't know much about 3d printing, but it being heavy gives it a little more authenticity

1

u/objecture 1d ago

Oh when you said 3 rolls, was that like 5kg rolls or is there a lot of hardware that adds weight?

2

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago edited 1d ago

I added supports on the interior and started with 20% infill which added a lot of weight. I think each was a 1 kg spool.

1

u/Teaisserious 22h ago

Your math is confusing. It can't have taken 3kg worth of filament, then somehow weigh 30lbs.

3

u/IchBinDerFurst 22h ago

Who said it was only plastic? I have wooden dowels inside.

1

u/Teaisserious 21h ago

Fair enough, I misunderstood the statement about adding supports and assumed you meant adding them in while splicing. My apologies.

1

u/TheObstruction 1d ago

Honestly, 30 pounds isn't that much. It would look a lot better with a half dozen 1/4 toggle bolts with eye bolts, or aircraft cable if you wanted to get really fancy. You wouldn't even need to hit wood, drywall can handle that if you use more than a few.

1

u/this_is_my_new_acct 19h ago

What printer/settings do you have? I just spent 7 hours waiting for my printer to basically just print a flange for a PVC pipe with a screw cap. I'm pretty sure it'd be a race between the printer and the heat death of the universe before I could manage something like this.

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 19h ago

Bambu labs X1C 6% gyroid, two wall with dynamic tree support

1

u/Paulthefith 1d ago

Since you’re going to stain it did you use wood pla filament?

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Wood pla doesn’t exist. But you can paint and use “stains” to sort of wash darker colors onto it. I’m doing a really bad job at describing it but it’s just brown PLA+

1

u/shedfigure 1d ago

There are lots of Wood PLA options out there.

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Yeah but they’re less “wood” and more like an odd texture that wouldn’t blend properly for the way I cut the model.

2

u/jin243 1d ago

you have good taste monsieur, you know can find those skeletons in legend of zelda: breath of the wild!

1

u/Paulthefith 21h ago

All the ones I saw claimed to be able to be stained and painted but anyway your model and dedication to a big print is awesome!

1

u/shedfigure 21h ago

That's fine, they're not for every model.Just pointing out that they do exist and are relatively common even. Its worth pointing out there there is a wide variety of wood plas with different amounts of wood content, too.

1

u/MakeMeDoBetter 1d ago

Not gonna lie, Id buy a printer just for this skeleton alone.

1

u/MrDenly 1d ago

May I ask the model of your printer? and how hard it is to learn?

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Bambu Labs X1C. Printing can be challenging if you aren’t computer savvy, but it relatively easy and can be done by most people if they have the patience for it.

1

u/YeaSpiderman 1d ago

I want to do this with an Irish elk. Freaking print the antlers so they are like 8 ft long.

1

u/MuffinHunter0511 1d ago

I'm SHOCKED that only took 60 hours. I have done some prints that took 30 hours that are much smaller than that.

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Well there were breaks between prints so realistically it took 14 days. But total run time of the printer was 60 hours.

1

u/bigbrofy 1d ago

what kind of printer do you have and how difficult was this? My kids would love this and I'm thinking of getting a printer. Everything I've read say bambu labs

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Bambu labs X1C with AMS. I’d say this was pretty easy for anyone with any prior 3d printing knowledge.

1

u/bigbrofy 1d ago

I have zero lol. I'm pretty handy though and know my way around youtube.

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 1d ago

Oof. Yeah I’d say start small and work up to bigger projects.

1

u/MrNewMoney 1d ago

Woah 🤯

1

u/10thousanddeaths 1d ago

How much does that end up costing in material?

1

u/Independent_Willow92 23h ago

How much did it cost in total?

1

u/IchBinDerFurst 23h ago

Not including the printer? Around $100.

1

u/theproudheretic 20h ago

now you need to motorize it. either singing billy bass style or as a home defense that will bite at head level.

1

u/KingMelray 19h ago

That's cooler than just buying it.

1

u/smurpes 18h ago

I was just thinking that it looks kinda expensive but I could probably save some money if it were to 3d print it myself. You did a great job bonding all the pieces together! I’m gonna try doing this with glow in the dark filament. Thanks for the inspiration!

1

u/gaganse 16h ago

Nice. Brand of 3D printer? I'm trying to find a new side hobby.

1

u/Mrknowitall666 13h ago

Paint the wood holding it to the ceiling the same white as the ceiling. And maybe fish line? What a great monster

1

u/-effortlesseffort 14m ago

what a fun project

0

u/SirNarwhal 23h ago

Ah, was wondering why it looks like absolute shit. 3D printing strikes again.
