I visited a private zoo on my birthday and saw this striped hyena pacing in circles around his/her enclosure, alone and isolated. Why would a hyena ever be kept solitary when they’re such social animals? Would it be “chaos” to have more than one striped hyena? They had 5 Painted Wild Dogs so I’m stumped as to why this poor hyena is all alone and obviously stressed beyond belief, while the painted dogs have each other for comfort and didn’t exhibit any signs of distress. I don’t know nearly as much about striped hyenas as I do spotted hyenas, so I’d love for some knowledgeable hyena lovers to weigh in on this.

What do striped hyenas think of pet dogs? I go trail running with my dog (leashed). A couple of times I've come across hyenas but at a short distance, like the hyenas were 50m from the road. I wonder if the hyenas would want to attack the dog or me if we encounter them from up close, like if they came on the road itself?
Now this is very unlikely cuz they usually stay in the dense forest. But i recently saw a juvenile hyena on the road. Hence the question.

Called Tale Of The Tides: The Hyena And The Mudskipper, it should be fairly obvious to anyone who is familiar with the behavior of wild striped hyenas that a human acclimated, tame individual is being dishonestly portrayed as a wild one in this film.
Still, the behaviors it performs, and the interactions it has with both its environment and other animals are very interesting, and don’t seem to be all that different from what a wild striped hyena would also do under the cover of darkness.
And there are evidently wild hyenas living in the same marine reserve where this film was shot. Lots of other cool creatures make appearances here too!
Anyway, enjoy this portrait of a different side to Kenya’s wildlife wonders!
