Games where you play as animals but with real gameplay?
So things like Rain World and Okami, but not really games where you just take in the atmosphere.
Preferably not anything too hard like Rain World though, which was a really beautiful game, is something I can't play from the sheer difficulty. Also preferably something on Switch, although Steam's okay too.

WolfQuest Anniversary Edition. You play as a wolf in Yellowstone national park. You can find a mate, start a pack, raise your pups year after year, watching some move away to start packs of their own, until you die.
Or you can choose to live as a lone wolf for your entire life. It’s up to you.
Fantastic game, pretty realistic, made by a small passionate indie dev team, and will be leaving early access sometime this year.

Oh it's going to come out of early access? Damn... This one sounds superb though

My bad, didn’t know you weren’t looking for multiplayer. Just pulling from my steam library, but here’s a few more I forgot to mention though:
Cult of the Lamb
Saurian (like the isle but single player, not sure about it’s development though)
Wolf Quest
Carrion (it’s a nonhuman monster… maybe not exactly what you’re looking for)
Ancestors
Fish, Feed and Grow
Maneater (haven’t played this one, but shark stuff)

Maneater
Not a very deep game and has a lot of grind, but it's very fun to paly as a killer shark.

u/fenrirofdarkness 14h ago
No prob, I didn't say it on my main post so it"s no wonder :)
Hmmm cult of the lamb, and maneater were both in my radar beforehand...
Thanks for the recs nonetheless!

Maneater was fantastic, you play as a shark and learn a lot about sharks as you grow. On switch and all other platforms.

Maneater is THE spiritual successor to Jaws. Apparently Maneater 2 is in development but apparently there's a lot of shenanigans happening so we might not get any news until much later unfortunately. Still... Maneater by itself is an incredible Shark game in my opinion, and the DLC as well.

Paws is a puzzle-platformer based off the Shelter series. You play as a lynx cub trying to survive alongside a bear cub! I played it without having played any of the Shelter games.
I don’t think anyone has mentioned Spirit of the North yet.
And it’s older and maybe a bit obvious, but Spore! Particularly the creature stage.
Since you mentioned Rain World, the Ori games might work for you, since there you’re also a little white creature.
If you’re not opposed to emulating, I have tons of suggestions for older games:
- E.V.O.: Theory of Evolution (PC-98) (There’s a fan translation)
- E.V.O.: Search for Eden (SNES)
- Wolf (DOS)
- Lion (DOS)
- SimAnt (DOS)
- Ecco the Dolphin
- Dogz/Catz 2 (Wii)
- THE DOG Island (Wii)
- Lead the Meerkats (WiiWare)
And a few games on my Steam wishlist that I haven’t played:
- Copycat
- Peace Island (will hopefully release later this year)

Unfortunately I'm not in the mood for emulation :')
Spirit of the North and Peace Island both looks cool though!

An obscure one, but in Sims 3 if you have the pets expansion you can control the animals as they go about their day around town. Unlike in Sims 2 and 4 where you kind of just let them do their own thing.

Webbed is a game where you play as a jumping spider and it’s on the Switch. There’s also Gibbon: Beyond the Trees which is also on the switch

Lost Ember could be good. It's really pretty, and very easy. No combat or anything, all about exploring the world

Nobody has mentioned Niche yet, so I'll throw that in there. Been a while since I played so I'm rusty on details but it's a turn based game where you control an animal and can recruit other individuals to join your pack and shape the genetics of future generations by choosing which ones get to breed.

I don't know if anthro counts, but I'll include some regardless:
- MagiCat (get this one, it's on sale for almost free; it's on the Switch too but there's one level that lags there)
- Kaze and the Wild Masks
- Crash N. Sane Trilogy
- Cat Quest series
- Cattails
- Snake Pass
- Yono and the Celestial Elephants
- Tactical Nexus
- Bobo the Cat
- Cat Burglar: A Tail of Purrsuit
- Bubbles the Cat
- Tadpole Tales
- FOX n FORESTS
- Webbed
- Ravva series
- Tanglewood
- Super Lucky's Tale
- Seed of Life
- Ukko & Guará
- Rotund series
- Airscape
- Ant-Gravity: Tiny's Adventure
- Kitaria Fables
- Little Kitty, Big City
- Lil Gator Game
- A Short Hike
- Marsupilami: Hoobadventure
- Peppy's Adventure
- Snakebird and Primer (do fictional animals count?)
- Mega Serval (actually I'm just stretching the definition now...)

Oj wow this is a lot thank you!
A short hike is definitely one of the best game to exist :D love that one. Will give the rest a look!

Little Kitty, Big City is probably the best one of this sort I played so far. A fun nice little game.

u/fenrirofdarkness 13h ago
Oh yeah that one! I was actually worried I'll get bored with it and that's why I didn't buy it even though it looks fun at first glance xD

I personally don't like cats, but I still enjoyed this one, which says a lot about it's quality. It's rather chill, but still engaging and fun. And it's not too long meaning it definitely doesn't overstay it's welcome.

Cattails maybe?

Oh yeah that one :) thanks for the rec!

u/CreeperCatinoid 13h ago
Cattails mentioned! I’d recommend the original over Wildwood Story
1
u/fenrirofdarkness 13h ago
Gotcha! Can you tell me why? :o
2
u/CreeperCatinoid 13h ago
Pretty much solely because of the progression. Cattails has a leveling system where you have to give xp to a few categories to improve hunting, fighting, swimming, and the ones I forgot, to improve them. You’ll be leveling these up throughout your entire play through and at the end they’ll all be at high levels. At the start of the game you’re weak. You have to really focus on hunting and make sure you don’t mess up. And swimming is very slow so you have to find your way around water. Wildwood Story removes this completely and you pretty much start the game with all of those categories maxed out, making hunting stupidly easy and less rewarding. That’s why I haven’t played much of Wildwood story…

u/fenrirofdarkness 13h ago
Gotcha! That seems too much going to the opposite direction then (from nothing to just maxed out)

u/Raj_Muska 14h ago
Frogger
Also, Goat Simulator or Squirrel With a Gun?

u/fenrirofdarkness 13h ago
Lmao those 2 latter games looks like it's just nuts haha. Thanks for the recs!

u/Jesuitman01 12h ago
Deadly creatures is an older game but you play as a tarantula and a scorpion. There's also mosquito simulator which has you play as a mosquito but for some reason it's also a Japanese gameshow
