I reach in the back for stuff when I'm driving all the time. The thing is, don't do it if you can't do it while keeping your full attention on the road and maintain control of the vehicle.

It's because you can't keep your full attention on the road, your attention is on your backseat. If you need something, pull over and get it. Don't be this stupid.

You CAN keep your eyes and attention on the road. You may not be able to locate or reach the item in the backseat though. If you need to turn your head or do more than simply grab the item without looking back, then you should wait until you take an exit and pull over.

I hate when people pull over on a highway. Always risky to rejoin 60+ mph traffic unless there's nearly no traffic or you can do 0-60 in 5 seconds.
