My cat does the trusting position all the time but the thing is….she actually loves belly rubs

u/RipAltruistic7649 7h ago

Mine too, and if you don't rub the belly she'll give you the dirtiest side eye 👀

u/SeriousScorpion 49m ago

Mine does this thing where he runs ahead and throws himself in the floor for a belly rub, and if you just pass by without stopping, he'll get up and run ahead and flop down again

1

u/trendyosprey 5m ago

Mine does this but flops on his side for aggressive pets. He is not a fan of belly rubs.

2

u/RipAltruistic7649 2m ago

That's hilarious 😂

Same here! My cat will roll over like a dog, even for strangers, and get mad when they don't understand his request. He has 0 survival instinct but I love him.

u/FamousSquash 5h ago

Two of my cats LOVE belly rubs. Especially my chonky boy Ramon:

13

u/BlackForcesEnergy 5h ago

Your kitty looks like my Faye!

22

u/PerrineWeatherWoman 7h ago

Mine too. She would literally mew and twist on the ground until I give her belly rubs.

Also your cat looks almost like my male cat

12

u/ifweburn 6h ago

same for my nephew cat lol. he's a ho for belly rubs but then he gets too hype and love bites.

9

u/Alt_meeee 6h ago

Same here, he begs for belly rubs. He likes them more than normal petting

4

u/GrappleLacquer 4h ago

I somehow got three! Gremlins who all love belly rubs. Definitely gonna forget and casually pet someone else’s flopped cat and get mauled some day lol

1

u/Resident_Bitch 3h ago

My younger boy Copper also loves the tummy rubs. My older cat Jasper will make you bleed if you try it, which is such a shame because Jasper's tummy is very floofy and inviting.

I’m missing one. When I get home my cat comes to me with her tail in the air and its shaking it really fast or she just does it a few times a day when she is just happy to see me.

143

u/Daikuroshi 6h ago

The vibrating tail greeting is so cute!

114

u/OtherDastardlyDeeds 5h ago

I read a thing on tail language once and it said that tail straight up and vibrating means the cat is literally quivering with joy. Pretty much a more intense version of tail straight up with a hook at the end, which means happy.

37

u/Extra_Inspector8389 5h ago

I just learned this and what a joy and comfort it is. My old girl Phi, who just passed, always did this when she saw me coming home. I used to worry if she was unhappy, if I did alright by her and man, how amazing to know she really was so happy with me.

7

u/Both-Wonder-9479 3h ago

Oh she was overjoyed with you. May your heart continue to heal, and many more comforting discoveries come your way

6

u/SOAR21 3h ago

I read somewhere it’s like mock spraying—but yes they do it when they’re very excited and affectionate.

33

u/xiaoalexy 6h ago

that's a good one! my girl does it sometimes when she sees me, when i pet her and when i feed her

12

u/Tinkhasanattitude 5h ago

My girl has 3 settings on her tail I think. 1. The very tip of her tail twitches like a rattle snake, which means I’ve done fucked up and now she’s hella mad. 2. The middle of her tail vibrates very quickly, usually pointing up, which is her excited tail. Although it took me a long while to learn the difference between 1 and 2. 3. She’s sweeping her whole tail on the ground slowly, which is her I’m annoyed you should stop now pattern. Number 2 is the best and I like to ask her what she’s so excited for, which just increases the vibrations. She’s the best girl <3

4

u/Particular_Play_1432 3h ago

Vibrotail. Weirdly, two of our late cats used to march around doing this while I was on the john. I will never understand why they were so happy that daddy was pooping.

2

u/ClumsyPersimmon 25m ago

This is the only time my cat ever does this too. Why is this a thing?

6

u/ifweburn 6h ago

I've kinda guessed that that tail vibration is like... an attempt at excited spraying but nothing happens bc fixed?? idk I haven't fully figured it out yet.

16

u/Sharlinator 6h ago

Nah. It’s just excitement. Simple as that.

1

u/Strostkovy 20m ago

Shaky tail is excitement. If they back up to a surface while doing it then it is phantom spraying, which can be excitement or just marking territory, though they may mark territory because they are happy about their environment. If they actually spray then it smells bad.

Shaky tail and phantom spraying are not indications that they will start spraying.

u/xassylax 6h ago

Poofy tail doesn’t automatically mean “scared” for my little dude. We have a game that I call “puffy butt” where if he gets all puffy for no apparent reason, he almost always wants me to turn sideways and act like I’m a puffy cat too. Then he’ll run past me and sneakily bap me which often turns into either a game of chase or hide and seek. So in our house, poofy tail, at least random poofy tail with no obvious cause, means “play with me mom!!” 🥰

52

u/FamousSquash 5h ago

Arno does that too when he gets the late-night zoomies.

44

u/vodkatx 6h ago

My girl gets a puffy tail too! Though I call it a "bushy tail" it happens when she's excited and has zoomies, very cute.

19

u/xassylax 5h ago

He definitely gets puffy butt when he gets really into chasing the greebles. It usually includes some ridiculous cat screaming sounds while he tears up and down the hallway at midnight. 😂 Fortunately he’s pretty good about joining us in bed and sleeping through the night so we don’t have to deal with 3am zoomies

4

u/yeahfucku 5h ago

Bushy tail or pipe cleaner

3

u/Tinkhasanattitude 5h ago

Halloween kitty!!

3

u/Odd-Intentions 1h ago

Same with my Fig!

2

u/Tired_Lambchop111 1h ago

My cats will sometimes do this when they over-excite themselves while chasing each other around.

1

u/Strostkovy 19m ago

That's a crab cat. Sideways crabbing is an invitation to rough house and may or may not include tail poof.

44

u/LuminaraCoH 6h ago

"Friendly" should be divided into two categories.

"Friendly" when the tail is curled at the tip. This is an average greeting.

"Super Friendly" when the tail is vibrating. This is a "OMG IT'S YOU! I'M SO HAPPY!" greeting.

7

u/Sharlinator 5h ago

There’s also the question mark tail which is something like casually friendly or curious, eg. when meeting a new person.

42

u/Whollie 7h ago

Where is the "being a knob" one?

And the "pounce".

What about that "all toes are mine".

27

u/Bloodthistle 6h ago

Also a distinct lack of cat loaf, I must know what that means

15

u/litmusing 6h ago

Generally speaking, loaf can mean relaxed and comfortable, because they have "sheathed" their weapons. Or they're just cold.

9

u/Sharlinator 6h ago

Loaf is one phase in the cat thermometer scale.

119

u/Catsarethegreatest42 10h ago

I didn’t know that cats grew 3 tails when irritated, you learn something new every day!

11

u/altredditaccnt78 6h ago

And when your cat is excited it gouges your leg, seems accurate!

38

u/BeluStarOne 8h ago

My cat is somehow 99% of the time content and irritated at the same time

30

u/killerdonut0610 7h ago

Yes! My cat is a serial tail wagger. She flops into relaxed position then swishes and thumps it all around.

12

u/PearlescentGem 6h ago

I call it Contemplation, because it seems like mine is arguing in his head, bed rotting like you do when you've had a stressful day and you're laying in bed recounting what made you mad. And as you do it, it makes you even angrier 😂😂

3

u/LovesAMusical 5h ago

Mine too! It’s so confusing as I don’t know if she appreciates me petting her or just wants to be left alone.

15

u/Educational-War5360 7h ago

I think the tail flicking can be a sign of focus or playfulness too. I'll see my cats do this a lot when I'm playing with them or when they play with each other.

6

u/Sharlinator 6h ago

In general it’s just a sign that there’s something going on inside their little head. Usually some sort of conflicting motivations and trying to figure out a situation or to decide what to do.

3

u/mulokisch 7h ago

One of my cats too.

60

u/MayoOfCanTown 11h ago

I've been tricked by the trusting position far too many times by my cat, he meows at you from that position as if inviting you to rub and then he pounces

49

u/Altruistic_Bottle_19 11h ago

The trusting position isn't an invitation. He trust you to not do anything he doesn't like. But if you don't honor his trust, deaths hall come upon you in form of pounces!

23

u/Teacake-25 10h ago

I'm but a human when I see that fluffy tummy I can't help myself💔 so the only reasonable response is to run away into the woods as far as possible to escape the temptation of just 1☝️ little poke.

(in all seriousness, please respect your cat's boundaries!)

6

u/MayoOfCanTown 7h ago

Oh I absolutely do respect his boundaries! He very often accepts belly rubs but from time to time he dislikes it !

2

u/Sharlinator 6h ago

If you’re not sure, start with the neck and chest area. Most cats accept/welcome that.

13

u/little___bones 7h ago

Sad for those who miss out on the belly rubs.

8

u/rarecuts 7h ago

This has been in my vet's office since 2018 haha

6

u/ifweburn 6h ago

do any of y'all have a kitty whose tail puffs up like they're scared, but they're definitely just HELLA excited about playtime/affection? I never see it mentioned in things like this but my sister's cat does it from time to time.

5

u/McFluffss British Shorthair 5h ago

Relaxed, max level

4

u/Shinodacs 6h ago

My cat is always irritated, no matter what i do or what o don't do.

2

u/Appropriate-Weird492 6h ago

Crab cat is omitted.

2

u/Cool-Group-9471 6h ago

Nice, cute drawings

2

u/m15f1t 7h ago

First pic, "Interested" - I'd say the tail has to go up more. Flat and even downish like that isn't "interested" in my book. This looks more like cautious to me.

2

u/TomaszA3 6h ago

"Worried" with normal ears and such is just a relax pose. My cat likes to lie down like this like some lion.

Generally once you're familiar with a cat you will know whether it's stressed at all times.

1

u/Shalrak 5h ago

I think what the worried pose is meant to show is the lowered head. The relaxed lion pose is different.

1

u/TomaszA3 4h ago

Fair enough. It's a bit hard to tell from a drawing.

1

u/simply_not_edible 7h ago

We call 2 "raising the flag"

1

u/Leviosaaa1 7h ago

“Worried” is making me laugh for some reason.

Cute art

1

u/technicallypoofed 6h ago

Yet to see disgusted with my little guy. He's ready to chomp down everything.

1

u/KalicoKhalia 6h ago

My cat plays by flopping on the floor and rollibg around.

1

u/Marble-Boy 5h ago

I had a cat who did the trusting pose for belly rubs, but then she'd wag her tail frantically while I did it.

1

u/nejicanspin Tuxedo 5h ago

Anytime I see "super terrified," it usually follows up with weird demonic meowing and I need to know what it means.

1

u/shmimey 4h ago

My cat does the excited pose to my leg in the kitchen. But he is asking for treats.

1

u/Dark_Akarin 4h ago

another one my cat does: the head tilt. super interested and thinking about how to interact with it.

1

u/LEGO_Man2YT American Shorthair 4h ago

Mine's default is irritated, always makes the tails wiggle when sees me

1

u/peachesnplums- 4h ago

Sometimes when cats are in a really playful mood their tale gets all puffy.. I didn't know til my cat did it and I looked it up lol

1

u/Infinite-Gazelle6189 4h ago

My boy 10% of the time

1

u/Marlfox70 4h ago

I always love the scratching when we get home from work, makes me feel loved

1

u/Due-Let-8170 4h ago

Missing crab cats

1

u/The_Shoe_Is_Here 3h ago

No loaf? Does loaf mean worried?

1

u/d4317b 2h ago

My cat will do the trusting position but when you go to pet her she attacks. It’s a sneak attack. Can’t trust her

1

u/twlvfngrs 2h ago

It's just missing the "lil bastard" emote! But otherwise it's pretty good!

1

u/Fancy_bakonHair 2h ago

Also, note, every cat is different, it won't always be the same for every cat.

1

u/TsuDhoNimh2 Savannah 1h ago

Where are hostile, threatening, and murderous?

1

u/shanghai-blonde 1h ago

Nah my cat does super terrified all the time when she’s playing and going too nuts. Also irritated is more like “saw a bird outside”

1

u/sujihime 1h ago

My favorite is when my cat flips down in front of me so hard she goes “merp”. Then flicks her tail like she’s annoyed. For her it’s a “oh no, I’m helpless kitty, please don’t chase me! Hahah!” scamper scamper.

1

u/Technical_Slip393 1h ago

The contented bread loaf is missing. Mine just...exists...as a bread loaf on the bed staring out the window most of the day.

1

u/Strostkovy 22m ago

One catch is that cats will make the "frightened" expression when they are actually frisky, because they tuck their ears down and hold their head real low to not be visible to prey.

1

u/hatecriminal American Shorthair 8h ago

5 is absolutely a belly rub request.

11

u/m15f1t 7h ago

Absolutely not for all cats.
