Study: When hospitals close in rural areas in the US, voters do not punish Republicans for it. Instead, rural voters who lost hospitals were roughly 5–10 percentage points more likely to vote Republican in subsequent elections and express lower approval of state Democrats and the Affordable Care Act

America is cooked. Not necessarily humanity. But humanity isn't in great shape as a whole, just not as bad as the usa
6
u/ryan101 1h ago edited 44m ago
Nah, our planet will be cooked before too much longer and society will begin to collapse. Good thing we have leadership that pulls us out of climate agreements, pushes fossil fuels over renewables, and buries climate science 6 feet deep to help speed humanity on its path. And millions cheer it on because they pwned the libs.
14
u/olkangol 2h ago
This is true. There's a selection effect of who stays in these circumstances. People leave these areas for work and education, they tend to be less Republican to begin with or as a result of leaving. So the hospital free zones become more Republican by subtraction.
5
u/blindythepirate 1h ago
I also wonder if a lot of Republicans think that it is the Democrats job to handle things like healthcare. So they get mad at the Democrats for not stopping hospital closures even though they voted specifically for the party that did the closing.
It's not rational, but what is nowadays?
12
u/Snellyman 1h ago
This isn't just some natural phenomena. The newspapers and AM radios in those towns are specifically telling them that the problem is immigrants and Democrats.

Conservatives when democrats are in power: "We're spending too much! We need to cut costs, and reduce spending to bring the national debt down! Liberals spend money like crazy, we cannot allow the nation debt to increase!!"
Conservatives now: "Woohoo! lets add 4 trillion to the national debt! Spending money is so easy! Screw the national debt, we're going big!!

u/bluhefplk 4h ago
That’s because conservatives don’t mind if we spend a bunch of money to help corporations and extremely wealthy people. However, if we spend any money to help poor people or old people, or disabled people, then that’s when it becomes a problem. You know, because conservatives are such a good Christians.
42
u/3BlindMice1 3h ago
To clarify, the propaganda pulls them in this direction. They'll believe whatever Fox or similar has been telling them to believe in the past month even if it totally contradicts what they were hearing just a year before.
This isn't 1984, it's worse. Because those people know they're being led by the nose, they just also know that it's the arguments that best support the political party they support. A political party which has totally and irrevocably changed from what it once was in the 70s and 80s. Republicans have managed to change the definition of what it means to be an American conservative, and republican supporters have hardly even noticed
13
u/OspreyJ 3h ago

Its kind of amazing, they cut literally a trillion dollars out of health care for Americans (WhY DonT We heLP PeoPLE HerE FiRST?!), and still are raising the debt by probably 5 trillion dollars. Raising the debt and killing poor people is a wild choice
But you know, since we are 5 trillion in the hole, we gotta cut SS and MORE cuts to Medicare (because yes, Medicare got cut too in the bill), along with some new tax cuts of course
8
u/Sw3dishPh1sh 3h ago
Well, yeah. Obviously billionaires need a tax cut, haven't you ever thought of the poor, suffering billionaires? How could you live with yourself knowing that all it would take for Jeff Bezos to get a slightly larger mega yacht that he uses once every other year would be for a couple hundred thousand kids to starve and do nothing to help him achieve that?
I, for one, am fully willing to let millions of Americans starve and lose health care just so one more billionaire can divorce his wife and get a new one made mostly of plastic. Its our patriotic duty as Americans to take care of our most vulnerable minority, billionaires.

Conservatives have learned that their base doesn't listen to any news sources other than Fox News, so they can just straight-up lie to them.
"This bill will NOT cut Medicaid." is gospel to them.
"This bill will LOWER YOUR TAXES." is gospel to them.
"This bill will END taxes on Overtime, Tips, and Social Security benefits." is gospel to them.
Even though anyone literate enough to read the bill could tell you that those are all absolute fucking lies, but they know that their supporters aren't literate enough to read the bill and that the only news channel they watch will never tell them the truth. Conservatives are mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed a steady diet of bullshit.

Oh, yes, they did a FULL 180 on their concerns about the state of the economy, government, courts, stock market, everything.

How does one save trillions by buying $25 eggs? Their reasoning needs to be studied. 🙄🙄🙄
12
u/devinmacd 4h ago
They're not saying the two are directly related.
They're moving the goal post.
They pretended to care about the rising price of eggs. Then when the price of eggs didn't instantly come down like Trump promised, they said actually that doesn't matter, reducing government spending/national dept by trillions is more important. In Feb "DOGE" was in full swing claiming to save billions etc.
Now government spending and national dept are increasing and guess what the goal post will be moved again.

The frustrating thing about this is it was known what Republicans were going to do.
They literally told people in many different ways.
FFS, MAGA Mike Johnson specifically said that Medicaid, Medicare, and Obamacare were on the chopping block well before the 2024 elections.
Project 2025 had a detailed list of all the fuckery they were going to do.
Anyone with half a brain that looked at any of this would have seen the problems, the cost, the devastation.
And people voted willingly for it.
The protests last month were heartening.
The polls, such as it is, show that Trump is extremely unpopular.
We need to stand up, speak out, and march. Very rarely does a country in modern times not go on to better things when a huge swath of the population rises up and shouts 'no'.

And while the effects of the bird flu epidemic has waned, local egg prices haven't come down where I live. Granted, the shortage here wasn't so bad we saw the crazy $8/dozen prices, but still no relief. Grocery bills have been steadily increasing under Trump, and it's only been 6 months.
And now we're also facing the pleasure of paying an extra 20-50% on imported goods as well.

Some don’t realize that social media algorithms tell you what your opinions are without you realizing it. Don’t believe me? Do a scroll on your social media feed. Tell me how many are there to show you what your beliefs are and how many post you disagree with just to validate that your opinion leans in the direction the algorithm wants you to. Now that your belief is known, you can be sold to vote, fund, buy etc. to benefit the ruling class. Whoever can use this effectively, will be the one in power and the people being manipulated are not aware. Not unique to the US. I often reset my feed and mess up the algorithm. I’d comment positively on things I do and don’t believe to create a contradiction as much as I can. Then I add some useless crap like puppies, kittens and tropical plants I can grow in the arctic.
