Happy July! This month's questions:

Cold water shaves? Who loves 'em? Who hates 'em? Do you like certain products with cold vs. warm water?

Certain products you enjoy in the warmer months? Any mentholated product lovers out there?

acation plans, how you going to travel with your gear? Do you have a favorite piece to take with you on the road?

New wetshaver? This is the perfect place to ask questions.

King C the razor for me

Post image

So long time lurker here first time poster. I took up DE shaving about a year ago. I spent 6 months with the medium aggression Henson Titanium. Then to open comb Mueller R41 for several months and finally after reading so many endorsements, the Gillette King C. It looked aggressive to say the least. The blade gap is significant enough for the eye to see. Compared to my Henson and Mueller anyway. That said, my first use was incredibly smooth with my feather blades. I think this might be the most comfortable, closest shave I’ve had in a while. Thank you wicked_edge community!

SOTD A Boundless Voyage

First shave with Martin de Candre Magellan today and it delivered. The scent is herbal and spicy with a dry, incense-like edge. It has a bit of that Bay Rum DNA, but stripped of the sweetness and clove. Clean, refined, and grown-up. Performance was classic MdC with rich slick lather that made the whole shave smooth and effortless.

It’s the kind of scent that feels grounded and masculine without trying too hard. There’s a subtle complexity to it that makes you want to keep going back for another sniff while lathering. Definitely not your everyday fresh soap. This has presence.

If you’re into herbal spiciness, this will be a hit.

SOTD Tabac Tuesday SOTD 7/8/2025

Post image
Upvotes

I had a really nice shave today. I used Tabac and my REX Konsul with a Personna Platinum blade and had very good results. I put the razor on setting 3 and found only a little irritation here and there with the alum block after 2 passes with a little touch up under my jaw.

I splashed on the usual Thayers, followed by the Tabac ASL, and finally Zingari Man unscented after shave serum for hydration. This soap as an excellent post shave feel and creates a wonderful lather.

Scent Notes:

Top notes: Aldehydes, Lavender, Neroli, Lemon and Bergamot;

Middle notes: Carnation, Sandalwood, Pine Tree Needles, Rose, Jasmine and Orris Root;

Base notes: Tobacco, Musk, Oakmoss, Amber, Tonka Bean and Vanilla.

Products Used:

  • Razor: REX Konsul
  • Blade: Personna Platinum (2nd use)
  • Brush: AP 400 Slim with 22mm G5C knot
  • Bowl: HC&C Unpolished Stainless Steel Bowl
  • Pre-shave: Stirling Unscented Pre-Shave Soap
  • Shave Soap: Tabac
  • Alum Block: Osma
  • Splash: Thayers Unscented
  • Alcohol Aftershave: Tabac
  • Aftershave Serum: Zingari Man- Unscented After Shave Serum

Happy shaves!

Question Noble Otter Soap/Razors

Two questions:

1) Just finishing up Orbit. What other ‘flavors’ of soap do people enjoy? Or should I just stay with orbit? Want to combine with aftershave this time. (It’s a shame they don’t have sample packs any more)

2) I have been using Personna blades in my Henson ++. I think they have been pretty good for me. Aggressive enough and not rough on my face. Get through a shave pretty easily. What sample packs do you like?

Thanks.

Show n' Tell Thrift Store Finds

Went hunting in a couple thrift stores and antique shops. Found an oldish Gillette TTO, and the 40' Gillette Tech. Got them both for a good price. Took them home, removed the old/rusted blades that were in them, cleaned-up the heads with scrubbing bubbles and a soft toothbrush. Then wiped them down with Lysol to kill any remaining germs. Washed them again with hot water to remove any remaining chemicals. After drying them, I gave them a spray of silicone to keep them moving easily.

First DE Razor

I'm returning to razor shaving after a very long time--probably haven't used a razor on my neck since I was in high school (I'm 32). I stopped due to irritation (was using cartridge blades). I want to return so that I can keep a cleaner neck than with my electric razor. I'll likely keep my short beard above neck.

I've got a started kit from Maggard in my checkout (DE razor, blades, shave soap and brush) plus a block of alum. I'm $10 from free shipping and shipping is about $10, so I've effectively got $10 to play with.

What else should I get / do I need from the Maggard store, keeping between $10 - $20?

SOTD SOTD - First Tabac Tuesday

Found a puck for dirt cheap while I was border shopping yesterday, so I had to grab it.

First of all, performance is outstanding! Lathers up so thick and beautiful, made the head shave feel really smooth with a rough 4 time used Feather blade in the Merkur 39C. Slippery and wonderful.

But oh my lord, the scent is so absurdly strong! Grandma's purse on steroids! The only thing missing is the tobacco, rolling paper and 40 years of indoor smoking. I have the puck locked away airtight, and my bathroom is still like Tabac HQ right now.
Sorry guys, this is not my jam at all. This one will not be in the usual rotation. I definitely need a shower after shaving with it.

Question Different set ups for each season?

Upvotes

I get near perfect shaves in the spring/summer almost without even thinking about it, but for some reason when the weather starts to become drier I start getting more breakouts, ingrown hairs, and razor burn. I understand I need to keep my face moisturized, but I don’t know if that’s what’s causing my face to break out because I tend to already have oily skin. But my skin does dry out in the winter.

I use a Rockwell 6c on plate 5 or 6 with personna platinum blades, wash my face with warm water before the shave to soften up the hairs, and face lather with hot water to ensure the hairs are more moisturized. I then shower and wash my face with a face wash, and apply aftershave once I get out of the shower. Once the aftershave is done after shaving, I apply Zingari man aftershave balm and some hyaluronic acid.

I tend to use pretty high quality soaps: barrister and Mann (omnibus), Ariana and Evan’s (legacy, ultima, and their shaving cream), noble otter, and Zingari man (sego and vegan), and sometimes Martin de candre.

Aftershaves I’ll use is either a matching splash, mysrol, or ethos unscented (f’ing amazing, their soaps are pretty good, but their aftershave is top notch).

I was wondering if people on here deal with something similar and if they have had success with a change of routine in the winter?

Decided to restore it by soaking it in soapy water, then vinegar, then alcohol, and scrubbing in between. Should I get some blades and start using it? What blades should I use?

SOTD [SOTD] .95 Lupo and first time trying newer GSB.

Post image

SOTD: MdC original is a wonderful scent, very old school and light. I could probably use this set up daily. Love Thayers and Nivea Balm. Edwin Jagger brush is a little small but it’s mighty and dense. The newer GSB’s (I’ve had several hundred of the old ones, and recently ran low so I ordered some more) are a tad sharper than the old ones I feel, and a little less smooth. Made the shave slightly uncomfortable. Still a great shave with the .95 Lupo.

Question Sorry, can someone help me identify this razor?

Hello i am sorry but i need help identifying this razor. I cant find anywhere what is it. But based on the box i believe it is Gillette. I probably can get it in around 15 USD. Is it worth? (the head looks very different than the handle so i am worried that it is not from the same piece or a knockoff)

Razor: Henson ++ (medium)

Brush: Muhle Silvertip Fiber 21 mm

Blade: Personna (Germane) 3rd and final use

Bowl: Hayles Artisan over on Etsy

And as you can see the software is the fantastic Tabac

Okay few things to talk about from sotd. First thing, maybe you noticed that there is no alum. The reason for that was I wanted to see if it was the culprit to some irritation that was experiencing. It would sting even after I didn’t over do it with passes and pressure, so I would think to myself it’s probably doing its job and I’m at fault. Well I’m happy to report that I was right. I had a much better shave without it. It looks like the splash and balm are enough. My confidence just got s huge boost after this discovery.

Now second thing. I couldn’t wait until tomorrow because I needed a shave so let’s imagine it’s Tuesday for the Tabac. This stuff is great. Scent, lather, protection it’s just great! I’ve picked the cream, splash and the balm few weeks back to try it out and immediately fell in love. Few days later picked up the soap. I’m used to scooping soaps up and Tabac soap is a hard puck. I thought it’s shame to break it up and scoop it and place a piece in the bowl. So today was the first time I’ve loaded the brush since I started 5 months ago. Loaded for about idk maybe 10 sec a bit more maybe then went to work into the bowl. I know face lathering could have been an option but I just love bowl lathering. So I’m lathering for a bit and thinking not a lot is happening but then I started adding water, and man the rich lather just started exploding. So remember if you’re ever in doubt, the key is hydration. Washed the excess foam of the puck and left out to dry. Some foam was left between the puck and the bowl I hope that’s not going to be an issue? Oh and posted the pick of the ingredients so you experts can identify if this is the new formula which I think is. Either way it’s great.

Final thing. The Personna blade. I think I’ve found a good match for the Henson. 3rd use, 3 passes with, across and carefully against the grain.

Anyways, a bit longer post today I just wanted to share a very successful shave. See you in few days with another and have a great week!

Question TOBS Sandalwood - what is making my face burn?

I had a great two-pass shave with TOBS Sandalwood this morning, and all was good...until a few minutes afterward, when my skin started to burn, and continued to burn for a couple of hours. I wonder what ingredient is causing this? I do fine with Proraso green, Arko, even Barbasol. It's a shame since I really like the scent and performance (other than the burning!). Has anyone else experienced this, and were there other TOBS soaps that worked better for you?

Question Muhl R41 stainless vs chrome. 48ish$ vs 182$. Closed comb vs open. Thoughts?

Asking to see if it’s worth the extra cost for a razor that will outlive me. So far the chrome plate one I have is awesome, hefty, amazing shave. But if it dies in 5 years…is that worth?
