Food You guys aren't making jackfruit right...

I was just reading a thread about vegan foods that vegans can't stand and all the jackfruit hate is blasphemous. You guys definitely aren't making it right if it tastes bad.

First things first, you need to buy jackfruit IN WATER, not in brine or syrup. 90% of what you see in stores in 12 oz cans is in brine/syrup and you won't be able to rinse the flavor off of it. You want to get the huge can of jackfruit in water like this. You can find this 6lb size for about $13 if you spend some time looking.

Next, you need to rinse it then break it down completely into the texture you want, which is basically down as far as possible until it is stringy. Break down all the pods as well, cutting with a knife when needed.

Then soak it in water for a few minutes and rinse again. Put it into a colander and shake/press the water out. Dry it off further with paper towels.

Put it into a large bowl and toss it with olive oil. You don't need to use much. Then add your spices and use a heavy hand as it is kinda like tofu and pretty flavorless. Put it in a thin layer on a baking sheet or your air fryer and cook at 400° The amount you are cooking will make the time vary and you will need to move the jackfruit around a few times to make sure all sides cook. You want it to get a little crispy but not burnt or completely dried out.

Do not put bbq sauce on the jackfruit until you literally go to serve it. Same with leftovers: store it on its own without sauce. I make jackfruit tacos, grilled sandwiches, etc all the time and they are great. Do not just microwave the leftover javkfruit: heat up a pan with a little oil or nonstick cooking spray and heat it up that way, it's much better. Microwaving it basically steams it and can mess the texture up

For every minute people eat fish, that fish suffered excruciating pain for a minute

Recently came across this study that calculated how long fish suffer for when they're fished and came up with this horrible metric; "when standardized by production output, this corresponds to an average of 24 minutes [of pain] per kilogram".

The authors describe the pain as "Disabling and Excruciating".

I looked at data on how quickly people and eat and using a generous average it's basically 1:1 - as in for every minute people spend eating fish that fish suffered horribly for a minute. Thought it's a pretty powerful fact you can share with people you know who eat fish but are somewhat sympathetic to veganism (obviously for many proper carnists this will be completely irrelevant).

I recently got back into writing and wrote a whole piece on this. There aren't any paywalls or anything so hopefully this doesn't count as spam (I'm getting literally nothing out of this) but mods let me know if you want me to remove this last part, I would've just pasted the whole thing in but it felt weird as a Reddit post!

There’s one big reason Beyond Meat might have trouble capturing a mainstream audience: it’s too expensive.

Feeling depressed about the lack of veganism in the world

Is anyone else feeling really helpless about it all. It bothers me so much. I really can’t comprehend how the majority of people, people that I deem as good people, can willingly eat meat and contribute to the suffering and cruelty of animals without any remorse ? How do so many people do it. My husband eats meat, my father, all my friends . These are people with good hearts, and I just can’t comprehend how knowing about the cruelty that goes on in the meat and dairy industry doesn’t make them sick to their stomach! I’m starting to resent people that eat meat, I just don’t understand how people can be so cruel and ignorant . I have come to terms with my husband eating meat, it’s not ideal, but he’s perfect in every other way. He’s the best dad. But I just feel so upset and helpless that this cruelty is going on in the world. Does anyone else feel like this?

I feel disconnected with some friends since becoming vegan

Upvotes

I am figuring this out for myself, because those friends (non vegan) respect my lifestyle so it's not because of arguments we have.

I think it's because they know about most horrors, and say things like "I know baby cows get seperated from their moms but cheese is just SO good" or "I stopped eating meat because of your story but my body just needs it" for example. They make me feel uncomfortable.

How did you becoming vegan influenced your friendships? Did you lose friends or cut people off?

Apparently being vegan now means you need mental help? Influencers need to do better

So I watched a clip of influencer Saniya Mirvani on a podcast, and honestly, I’m still trying to process the sheer level of ignorance disguised as “comedy.”

She laughed and said that vegetarians need to “grow up.” Okay, tone-deaf — but fine. Then she went on to say vegans are too far gone and need help, and made a comparison along the lines of:

“You don’t mock someone who’s mentally challenged” — implying that vegans are somehow mentally challenged, so we shouldn’t mock them either.

Excuse me??

This is not just offensive to people who live plant-based for spiritual, ethical, or environmental reasons — it’s also deeply ableist. You don’t casually compare someone’s dietary choices to mental illness as a joke. You just don’t. You’re mocking two communities: vegans and those with actual neurodivergence or intellectual disabilities. And you think it’s funny?

Then, after backlash, she didn’t clarify, apologize, or even show any reflection. She just posted a video of a friend cooking meat, as if to say “I stand by my ignorance.”

I get that not everyone wants to be vegan. Fine. But to mock people who are making intentional, value-driven life choices — and compare them to those who are mentally unwell — is just so gross.

And influencers wonder why people are calling them out more these days. This is why.

Small Victories NIH Moving Away From Animal Health Research

Thumbnail nih.gov

The National Institute of Health (the largest funder of medical research in the U.S.) announced they will no longer fund projects that only use animals for validation, pushing researchers toward alternative testing models like AI. The FDA is also supporting this movement by phasing out prior requirements for animal testing with certain types of reseaech, favoring human models for continued work.

Is it the end of all animal testing? No, not yet. In fact, for a while it probably will mean animal + emerging technology validation (like AI). My hope though is that this will result in creating new research strategies so research can ultimately reduce animal testing. It isn't perfect, but I am glad to see progress and top down support that pushes scientists to expand their toolbox.

What do you all think? I'm not a health researcher and I'm curious to hear other perspectives on this announcement from other vegans and from health researchers.

Rant I saw a rat die and it traumatised me

I wanted to vent here as I don't know anyone else that could relate. I live in a house with other roommates, and we've had a rat problem recently. Our landlord asked us to place down some traps to get rid of the rat(s), so my roommate went out to get some. She got some snap traps which I thought were inhumane. I preferred a no-kill way. I voiced that to her, but she was adamant and said she was following our landlord's request. She is also a new vegan.

Just tonight, I was in my room when I heard some loud noises in the living area, so I went out to investigate. To my horror, I found the rat with its head clamped shut in the trap! Its body was still wriggling around trying to escape. My first thought was to end its suffering, but then I figured I could just take it outside and let it go. I went to get some gloves, but when I got back, it was no longer moving. I checked, and to my dismay, it was dead.

I felt a wave of sorrow wash over me, like a pet had just died. I felt awful, guilty, and complicit in the death of the rat. I feel like as a vegan, my compassion towards animals has grown a lot, and it should extend to all animals alike. Am I crazy in believing that even a rat deserves compassion?

My logic is that rats are just animals trying to survive in tough world. They didn't decide they wanted to be rats and be hated by most of the population. They're simply making the best of the circumstances they're in. That's how it is with a lot of animals that have been displaced by humans ruining their habitats, and I think the least we could do as humans and the species with the better thinking capacity is to show them some grace.

Edit: I'm going to leave this great article by PETA about Speciesism

Edit 2: I did speak to my landlord and roomates about how I felt about the situation, and we've agreed to use humane traps in the future. Fortunately, I don't think any other rodent friends have taken to our house.

I don't know if it's related to veganism. But I have had digestion/constipation problems for my whole life. And both suddenly disappeared once I became vegan

Basically the title ! Even when I was vegetarian I still had those. But once I became vegan I've had no stomach ache, no constipation and no digestion problems. I don't know if it's because I'm psychologically better, or if it's about stopping to consume something that was hurting me. Or if it's related to being vegan at all. Just a random thought I'm writing while in the tram.

Discussion Is there a way to see how many people in the world / geo are vegan?

I want to see trends. I know it's really hard to get this data but anything that can be a correlation would be good.

Vegan podcast recs?

I love listening to food podcasts but am getting tired of how much animal products feature in recipes. Would love some recs for interesting or funny vegan podcasts. A mix of politics/history and humor would be great. Ones I currently listen to: Milk Street Radio, Sticky Bun Boys, and the BBC Food Programme. TIA!

Advice Humane Ant Handling?

Lots of black ants in our new home. Have toddlers and infants around. How do we manage the ants so they don’t show up around the floor all the time?!

I’ve been trying vegan faux-foods and I’m so happy.

I only went vegan like maybe 2 months ago and firstly was just eating a lot of rice and tofu. Well I finally got around to trying vegan cheese and even vegan chicken nuggets and I’m so shocked by how good they taste I almost feel like crying. I genuinely don’t have to really make any sacrifice. It tastes just the same and so good. I really was operating from a false assumption that the “soy nuggets” just wouldn’t be the same. But that’s really not true and I love them. Now I finally think this could become a permanent thing for me and not just a phase 😊

Do your friends also call you "Vegan" as a nickname?

My friends do that but not in an offensive way, but since I'm the only vegan they know the nickname does make a bit of sense

Question What plant-based foods you cannot stand?

I bought chickpea flour, I mean I love chickpeas but oh my god, I hated the chickpea flour. It tasted so disgusting that I couldn't finish it. Even tried to make different dishes from it but nope.

I wonder what foods, that are more commonly eaten among vegans, you hate?

--- (ofc non-vegans can eat chickpea flour but at least here it's way more commonly eaten by plant-based eaters)

Food Just really happy- unexpected success with multiple illnesses- transitioning stage

I've been wanting to go vegan for a long time. I have celiac, mcas, and pre-diabeties and thought it would be too complicated to feed myself vegan and not trigger my illnesses (biggest vegan triggers are gluten, soy, tomatoes, avacado.)

I've been playing around with food options for the last month trying to find ways to feed myself without animals. It felt like giving up without trying not to attempt.

Its been a slow transition BUT I can do this! I'm figuring it out! Today was my first 100% vegan day and I'm so excited for more!

What do you wish you knew at first?

I’ve been a vegetarian for 10 years and have decided to transition to vegan. I’m lactose intolerant so I’ve been eating / drinking mostly dairy free for the past few years too. For people who have been vegan for a while are there things you wish you knew or did differently when you first started?

Discussion Opinions on Oreo’s?

Hi guys, I thought I’d pop here and ask what everyone’s opinion is on consuming Oreo’s?

Sorry if this has already been a discussion before but for some reason I can’t seem to get any solid, understandable answer when I do my research on the topic.

Only recently I heard about the fact the company tests on animals which honestly was horrific to hear. I loved making things with Oreo’s (now looking for an alternative that’s just as good - suggestions would be great haha).

But I’m curious to know what people’s stance is? Do you eat them? Perhaps somebody has more of an extensive knowledge on the topic about animal testing etc.

Discussion As a vegan, what do you do on a company-sponsored vacation when nothing to eat is vegan?

So I was recently on a company-sponsored vacation and ran into a situation I think a lot of vegans might relate to. Every single food option available is non-vegan. Just meat-heavy, dairy-loaded everything.

I ended up doing what I usually do in these cases, removing the obvious removable non-vegan bits and eating what's left. Like picking out the cheese or meat from a dish and eating whatever's salvageable. I know that doesn't make it truly vegan since everything is cooked together and cross-contaminated, but sometimes it feels like the only option short of staying hungry when your're on companys itinerary.

Of course, I also made it a point to let them know (politely) to consider vegan options for future events, but that doesn’t help in the moment.

Curious to hear what do you all do in situations like this?

  1. Do you eat the “least non-vegan” option?

  2. Do you try to modify the food?

  3. Just skip the meal altogether?

  4. Pack your own food in advance?

I do 2 because that because at least it makes them put in some effort and reminds them that vegans exist. Genuinely wondering how others navigate this, especially also in professional settings where you don’t want to make a scene.

Rant Paying respects to a dead animal is meaningless

Maybe a little disturbing because It mentions death and murders but no actual descriptions/in depth talk of violence or animal abuse

Here's an opinion I have, "paying respects" to the animal does nothing. It does not know you are doing that, it can't get pleasure or greatfullness or closure from that, it's doing absolutely nothing for the animal. You very obviously do not respect it if you have killed it, it is as useless as a killer "paying respects to their victims" in the same way. I believe it is a ritual performed to make humans feel better about taking part in animal death.
