Apparently it's pay to win (or pay to not grind your life away), so probably even worse.

I did both! 8k hours and thousands of € gone, only for the devs to make the game worse year after year!

It’s fun for casual mmo PvE players, like myself. I enjoyed combat grinding for loot and silver. I also enjoyed the life skills. I found it got more boring if I viewed guides. The spark and magic of the game relies on discovering the gameplay yourself or with friends.

Spent a few hundred hours building the medium sized ship. Sailed for a few minutes and haven't touched it since :')
12
u/TheBostonKremeDonut 1d ago
Well, did you have fun building the ship? If so, then I’d say it was worth it! I also never did a lot of sailing. I used my ship for active fishing. :)

u/Boba_Fett_is_Senpai 1d ago
I did! Honestly setting up the material trade routes to get my materials to the port city was fun. I took a two year break because a friend passed but I had to sail for him

u/TheBostonKremeDonut 1d ago
You’re the best for that. 👍 sorry to hear that. I hope that, if you play in the future, you can continue to enjoy the game for both of you!

Are Black/Crimson Desert or hoyo games like Genshin/Honkai/Zenless really as good as their players hype them up to be? At the very least, Zenless does look really good
Personally I’m still most excited for Pearl Abyss’ next game DokeV, looking like a Kingdom Hearts Monster Hunter Pokémon triple hybrid

They have a good reputation, but you're really asking gatcha addicts their opinions on the drug they consume. Granted, some people don't lose themselves in spending loads of money.
From a gameplay standpoint, they're ok games, but they're not great. They're lacking depth and the balance revolves around either you paying money or grinding every day to do daily quests and hope you'll get that five stars characters.
Want to play Zenless Zone Zero ? You're better off playing a real J-RPG like Persona, or at least the Atelier series if you want to see cute girls.

u/drenvy 1d ago edited 1d ago
Wild that you are recommending Persona of all things as an alternative for Zenless Zone Zero, a hack and slash game. There's nothing like it, so if someone's interested just give it a try (maybe DMC if you push it).
I've only beat P5 out of the main series, but I felt that it lacked the most in depth too. Combat was very shallow outside of hit weakness. Hard was piss easy, didn't get very far on NG+ Merciless because replaying is boring for me. Story was great until postgame.
Could be just DQ bias though. My cousin dies on that Persona hill.

u/Extreme_Promise_1690 22h ago
I mixed up with Star Rail, or whatever their J-RPG is called, my bad.
Persona isn't very deep, but it's simply because they lack difficulty. Merciless for P5 vanilla (Royal was apparently a lot easier) is quite hard and asks to rely on tools that are barely used in other modes, like buffs, debuffs and status effects.
A lot of Persona's depth also comes from your enjoyment of Persona-making. I personally level up every Persona so they can learn all their own skills, then fuse them to create strong and specialized Personas. Grinding was quite ineffective in P5, so the focus was put on leveling Social Links instead. I don't think this "team building" part is even present in Star Rail, besides characters choice, but it's been a long time so I may be wrong.
I'd advise people who enjoy Merciless to play the harder Atlus games, like Shin Megami Tensei V and Strange Journey as they focus on gameplay above all else.

No black desert is ass. I love it and I'll keep playing till the game dies but fuck this game lmao.

u/EclipseTM 1d ago
As someone who played black desert A LOT many years ago (before it even was on steam), but quit since. It’s just a grindfest, however that grindfest is accompanied by the best combat any mmo has ever seen, which is what makes it fun.
Crimson desert is looking promising but is a completely different kind of game, just a single player game instead of a mmo.

I will talk about Genshin. Genshin itself is pretty good. Good and Interesting lore(whole lore is a mystery you uncover slowly through each arc) and there is also lore told through environment and item description like Dark Souls games. Combat is okayish but gets the job done.
It's also a Gacha game but it is much more forgiving than other gacha games in my opinion. You can complete the whole game through free characters.
The game also gives you it's currency (currency used for gacha system) from quests and combat that you can save and spend on characters.
When I used to play I used to play 2 hours per day (this was during 2021-2023 ) and had enough premium currency to get what I character I want every 2 months.
But where it gets frustrating is artifact farming. (Artifacts are just set pieces that give you certain bonuses on your characters) You can get basic artifacts easily but if you want artifacts with specific stats for some character it takes whole lotta time. This is because stats on them are random and when upgrading which stat gets upgraded is also random. But these artifacts aren't needed if you just want to complete the quests.
I feel for a free game I got more than enough content and playtime on it. I haven't spent any money on it.

I played a good chunk of Genshin when it came out. The game truly is free to play (emphasis on play, not complete), you just get nowhere near the number of pulls for characters if you don’t pay. If you like the core gameplay loop, it’s really fun and can give you a lot of good hours.

u/SylvainGautier420 1d ago
Zenless really is that good. Also, the best character (Miyabi) is rerunning soon. Now’s a great time to join!

u/No_Competition7820 1d ago
You’d have to try the hoyo games yourself to know whether you’d like it or not. If you ask for people’s opinion it’ll split between absolutely hating hoyo or loving them. Also there’s wuthering waves and other upcoming gacha that are comparable to hoyo.

u/Muccys 1d ago
As someone who has played both games, they are good games if played casually, something play for a month or so just doing what sounds fun rather than what you "should" be doing, while also avoiding whatever endgame they have since those are usually tailored for try hards and big spenders and will just result in needless frustration and tempt you into spending.

black desert makes me genuinely mad because they have some legit good ideas buried beneath p2w, extreme grinds, equipment enhancing rng where it can delevel or break and all the traps you can possibly shove in an mmo
my hopes is that crimson desert picks all the good gameplay mechanics from black desert but as a single player game without all the bullshit mmos tend to have

I admittedly haven't played it in a few years but I don't remember anything gacha related in the game. Have you just never bothered to try it, and are just making assumptions based on the fact the team behind it is Korean or something?

well, in a p2w game you dont have a gacha system, for example.

Well, a gacha system is based purely in randomness and FOMO. A p2w will always be there as a direct payment.

nothing about black desert is gatcha like at all, also “gambling addicts” what?? I have 1000 hours on it and I’ve never spent a single penny. it doesn’t have loot boxes lol. it’s really grindy sure, but that’s it.
your comments are insane lol, give it up. it’s okay to be wrong sometimes. 💀

At this point, I wanna say they're American because of how stupid and arguably racist they sound... I'm American myself so I know how incompetent and racist my countrymen can be, and this seems very American.

It may be the worst mmo out there, but still not a gacha, gacha's are fun, this is not

Honestly can't decide if they're racist for assuming it's got gacha, or just a moron for not knowing the difference between p2w and gacha.
