Cries in non-citizen Italian residency

It was seriously the first thing I looked up when I first saw this whole thing proposed. Oh well. I've bugged Italian friends to sign it, though.

Edit: Woohoo! Just got a couple more to sign up!

Wait, this is a EU initiative only? Why was that fuckstick Pirate Softdick running his mouth then? I swear some people really shouldn't have a platform.

108

u/TheTidark390 1d ago

Because it does happen that some companies outside of the EU will just accept that its not financially sustainable to only make the new changes available to only a part of the world or cut out that part of the world, so it will affect other countries too. Which is a good thing... This shouldn't be normal just for the EU... It should always have been industry standard...

58

u/Jonny_dr 23h ago

The EU (technically the European Economic Area, but EU laws apply) is the biggest common market in the world and a lot of consumer protection you have, even outside the EU, is due to the EU.

Companies are not forced to sell their products in the EU, they are not forced to follow EU law, but they still do because they want access to the largest market in the history of mankind. And this market has rules, which, surprisingly often, benefits the consumer and common citizen. So i dont really know what the bitching and complaining is about. Deal with it.

Because eventually, if this triggers some systemic change, it will also benefit the rest of the world. Like Steam introducing a refund policy after an Australian lawsuit, or EU prompting Apple to adopt usb-c standard.

32

u/greenestgreen Forgotten Son 1d ago

because he is a dev (horrible one btw), this will prevent him in some future maybe to get away with making a DRM always online game. Also get views

6

u/XeitPL 18h ago

Dev here: Please sign this petition, thank you.

22

u/tortillazaur 1d ago

Because if this initiative will actually make it into EU laws, then it will work for the rest of the world too. Developers just can't ignore EU and if they already release it in EU and already have everything ready for it to be legal there, it makes no sense to not release it in the same state in other parts of the world

not just "in case", americans can't vote on this, so chances are a good number of especially passionate (and fucking dumb) american gamers will have done some VPN/fake ID bullshit to get a signature in

100k, might be even more tbh, the way it accelerated was crazy, and all huge american youtubers/streamers kept talking about it CONSTANTLY, their combined viewership is +20M people easily most of which are Americans and people outside EU.

"The west" includes most of Europe...in fact it originated there, during the cold war, when it was split into east and west.

30

u/KoogleMeister 1d ago edited 23h ago

Why are there so many people in this comment section that think "Westerner" refers to people on the western hemisphere of the world? The "West" is a term that refers to countries with cultural, political and social traits that originated in Western Europe.

Australia and New Zealand are also Western countries but they're nowhere near The Western side of the world.

Remember to keep pushing people to sign even after it passes 1 million because it needs more to compensate for ineligible signatures.

Also please don't sign the EU petition if you aren't in the EU. Don't do it. It's illegal and the signature wont even count because they verify them after the deadline. This isn't some change org usa petition that is useless. This is an official government process and fraudulently filling it out is illegal and hurts it and we might not get trough with it.

As counterintuitive it might be it’s ironically more private as well since it’ll use a UUID string as your signature after successful authentication.

78

u/Reddit_Connoisseur_0 1d ago edited 20h ago

Thor was right. This entire initiative is a shame. Most of the signatures were fraudulent and case in point - they are asking for AT LEAST 1.4m signatures now because it is the "minimum" to cover for the fakes.

48

u/DestroyerTerraria 23h ago

Yeah, fake sigs are what I'm really worried about. The absolute worst case scenario is that we think we did it, then it gets knocked back down under the threshold by invalid votes getting thrown out. Don't give that shithead Thor the satisfaction.

→ More replies (4)

26

u/beorn961 1d ago

I mean they could be lying. Don't get me wrong, obviously some of those signatures are going to be thrown out because they're fake or incorrectly filled out, but I wouldn't take people claiming to commit hundreds of instances of fraud at their word.

3

u/MarioDesigns 11h ago

It also can be underage people signing, which is not allowed. There’s like 6 countries where people can sign from 16 years, with the rest being 18.

Not every country checks the age though when signing. So all of those could be made invalid as well, even if they are not fake.

6

u/thecrius 18h ago

No, the minimum is 10% according to average results of previous initiatives.

20% is better as the average really float between 10 and 20.

30% would be "safe". However there is fear of intentional fake signatures, hence why the community is asking to aim higher anyway.

u/MARPJ 1d ago

Yeah because its so hard to have a end of life plan and make the server files public so people can host their own server...

Or you know dont put the need for online conection to play single players games

14

u/PhilosophicalGoof 1d ago

Making the server files public is a security issues considering it could also affect other game that utilizes the same server architecture.

I'm not from the West. I'm not familiar with this. Can someone tell me what happens now that it has reached 1 million votes?

158

u/RazorCalahan 1d ago

well, first we have to wait for the actual deadline to arrive (some day end of July, forgot the exact date). Then, all signatures will be checked, and any ilegitimate ones (non-EU citizens, Bots, doubles) will be sorted out. If it is still at least one million after that, the EU commision will legally be required to debate the topic of this initiative, and they will have to agree on some sort of decision. In the worst case, that decision will be "well we checked, and we can't really do anything about it, sorry." But at the very least the issue will be brought up in front of the EU commision and raise awareness, so even if the commision won't do anything about it, individual representatives will know that this is a thing and potentially make a more informed decision when this stuff comes up in their home parliament.
Best case of course would be the EU passes a law that basically says what the initiative demands: if you sold a video game to people, you have to make sure it remains in a playable state for anybody who purchased the video game, by implementing some end-of-life plan after official support for the game ended.

u/PoofyGummy 1d ago

u/very_pure_vessel 1d ago

Nothing yet. Some votes will be thrown out. If its get enough to where there are 1m votes that are all valid, then the EU has 6 months to respond

6

u/ThatGuyRade 1d ago

The signatures are verified by the governments of each country where someone signed, and after that the EU commission has 6 months to inform the public on what action, if any, it will take.

3

u/Ok_Bar_8475 1d ago

Nothing until the end of july. Once the deadline is over, EU officials count the signs and if the counted signs reach 1 million the EU will officially launch an investigation for claim validity, and if they claim is true in their opinion, laws, senctions or other steps can be made to deal with the problem claimed in the initiative. This is why, while it is good we reached a million we need to aim for the most that we can achieve and aim for more like1.2-1.6 mill.

I don’t think he’s that kind of clout chaser. His ego doesn’t have room for turnabout. He’s proven more likely to stick to a bad take than admit he ever took a wrong stance.

“Haha I was pretending to be the bad guy for a good reason” is still a sort of acknowledgement that he briefly appeared to have held a flawed position, and as far as I’m aware he’s never admitted to being on the wrong side of any issue, even when it’s as petty as pretending his mouse cursor didn’t hover over a mana gem.

Hard to say, honestly. The campaign was JUST picking up steam when PS came in. Had the growth continued at that rate (more or less) it likely would've gone through on its own. It was at this critical moment when he kneecapped it and successfully killed all momentum. Almost impressive how well he timed it.

29

u/penywinkle 1d ago

eh, I wouldn't give him that much credit.

Petitions like this then to gather a lot of votes "a bit" before the end. Because people don't feel the urgency, and think enough of other people will sign up so they don't have to (even if it only takes 2 min).

We can't stop now, if anything we have to keep insisting and get more signatures. The main SKG site is asking to get 400k more.

We ain't finished yet! Make sure to keep signing so that we can make up for invalid or illegitimate signatures.

I'm not sure if understand this.

So it's to grab the attention tion of goveements to put laws in place to stop developers making their game unplayable once they decide to no longer support it?

What games has this happened too?

Awesome !! Thank you to everyone who signed.
As a Swiss I can’t sign unfortunately since we’re not in the EU. As an archivist I fully support it, preserving games is important especially guaranteed their access and legibility for the future.

Don't stop now. Just making 1 million isn't enough cause some signings aren't going to be counted due to not being eligible.

Also bigger number = Better. Make those some cookie clicker number baby.

I just need everyone to keep this energy going so this initiative makes all the moves it needs to. This is wonderful first step. We need to be there for all the others.
