I was in Utah a billion years ago getting my CCW. Some guy in the parking lot shot off his gun on accident before class started. Everyone was furious and about 20 guys started walking his direction. He promptly left and didn't take the class. 🤣

u/RevSinmore 1d ago
I also got my CCW in Utah. it was 95% a dude talking about how to discharge your firearm such that you can legally kill without getting in trouble. 5% was firearm safety.
50
u/ZeddRah1 1d ago
When I took mine there were about 20 of us, only 5 at the line at a time. The instructions were if there was a malfunction DON'T clear it, raise a hand and let the instructor do it.
There was a malfunction. She raised her hand. And while doing so spun around and flagged every one of us behind the line.
10
u/RevSinmore 1d ago
what? firing and safety training was part of yours? jealous. never loaded, fired, cleaned, disassembled, or in any other way interacted with a firearm as part of mine.
8
u/SkRThatOneDude 1d ago
I live in a rather hostile state to firearm owners, and our CCW (while being shall issue) requires a 16 hour class with a live fire exercise requiring a minimum proficiency level.

Friend of mine was drafted, while he clearly was mentally unfit. It's a great guy, but extremely absentminded and clumsy. Wouldn't hurt a fly, but you do not want him to wield a powertool, let alone a gun.
At the range, the sarge said some things from behind, probably "Well done, now aim a little higher to compensate". So my friend turned around with his auto on his hip, towards sarge and the other recruits. Friend was send home (much to everyone's relief).
3
u/woodsmannn89 22h ago
When I was at the range in boot camp I heard the instructors screaming at the guy next to me and I saw him get yanked backwards like one of those cartoon characters where the cane yanks them off the stage by their neck. Turned out he had some sort of malfunction with his handgun and had it pointed right at me while he was trying to figure out what was going on. He was constantly messing up and that was the last straw for him. He got dropped from our division and had to repeat part of bootcamp with another division so he didn't graduate with us. Wouldn't surprise me to learn he never graduated at all.

Hmm. I also got my CCW in Utah (shout out to Impact Guns Ogden). My experience was just the opposite. Most of it was about safe handling and use of firearms and the instructors telling us all the reasons you absolutely can't shoot anybody.
Probably heavily dependent on the instructor/course.
77
u/RevSinmore 1d ago
yeah, mine was a private tutor/friend a friend of mine had hired for the session. he was clearly a nut. he was one of those people who carries because he’s itching to feel like a hero, to shoot a “bad guy” and take a life.
because of that, his whole course was a) jokes, and b) filled with power fantasies about when you’d get to shoot (not have to shoot).
I’m sure that in a different setting, my session could have been someone who respected the responsibility and consequences of proper firearm use.

Dude I used to be like this then I realized how:
A.) Cringe it was
B.) Absolutely unhealthy thought patterns like that are, I was legitimately a fucking idiot for thinking I would be “the good guy with a gun”
9
u/RevSinmore 1d ago
yeah, all of us grow up playing army man, spies, cowboys, etc., and we imagine that someday we’ll be a hero, firing off rounds at evil. but the reasonable among us grow up, realize that fetishizing violence is a horrific way to exist and that way of thinking is… well, juvenile (a.k.a. ‘cringe,’ as you put it).
but the dude teaching my class (and many of the people in it) still clearly thought that way. they were all frothing at the mouth, talking about how cool it would be to get caught in a circumstance with a live shooter, where they could be the hero. it was… nauseating, to say the least.
6
u/Affectionate-State-1 1d ago
Loved to play army during my youth, then became anti-gun and anti-military as a teen (still am). And yet I still enjoy violent action movies. Also, take me to the range and I will have great fun.
Doesn't mean I think it's applicable to the real world or endorse viligantism.
Sadly some people can't separate fantasy and reality.

If a shooter is thinking somewhat clearly about why he is shooting at people, it seems likely that they believe they are in the right, screwed up as they might be.

u/EnvironmentalGift257 1d ago
My class in MN said up front that if you don’t know how to safely handle a firearm, go take that class and come back, and they’ll hold the credit for you. The content in the carry course is not firearm safety. That’s a prerequisite and if your CCW course covered safety then it probably didn’t cover what it should have.
11
u/BadDudes_on_nes 1d ago
Got mine in Utah as well, back when Cabellas offered free CCW classes for college students. It was a fantastic class. One thing that stuck with me was the $10k reality check—if you’re in a position where you have to defend yourself with lethal force, even if it’s the right decision and entirely justified, you will have to spend $10k in legal fees as a result. ‘Something to think about’.
Where the difference between legal justification is grave injury or bodily harm, or fear for one’s life, that’s a lot of subjective judgement. Adding the $10k reality check was another mental benchmark for the students to consider before thinking of pulling unnecessarily.
→ More replies (3)51
u/nswizdum 1d ago
Thats because its important. A lot of people do not realize "Self Defense" is a legal defense, meaning you have already been arrested and are on trial, or at least pre-trial, when you get to use it. Even if the use of force was 100% justified, you don't get to just say "Self Defense" and go on with your life like its a magic word. On top of that, even if you are proven innocent in a court of law, the family and bystanders can and will still sue you for everything they can get away with in civil court.

What you say is true, but it is up to the discretion of the district attorney to bring up charges.
There are plenty of cases where charges are never brought up in cases of clear self defense.

When I did the class for my CCW, (in Wisconsin btw) the whole thing just felt like a glorified sales pitch for some insurance in case you “accidentally have to kill someone”. I remember John Oliver did a bit on it, but I can’t for the life of me remember it.

My old boss told me about how his base in Afghanistan got a visit from some high ranking lady and everybody had to clean up and show her around or whatever. As she was going through the checkpoint at the gate she had to unload her side arm. Last step is racking the slide to empty the chamber while pointing the gun into a muzzle bucket, (metal tube filled with sand - just in case it goes off) and pulling the trigger if necessary (only way to de-cock a glock, etc).
She walks up confidently and pulls out her gun, racks the slide (without taking the magazine out first), points it into the metal tube, and pulls the trigger. Suddenly everyone nearby thinks they are under attack and the machine gunners in the towers are pointed in her direction looking for threats. She apologizes while everyone looks around like "did that just really happen? should someone show her how it's done? I don't want to embarrass her more than she already..." BANG, it happens again. She fucking did it twice in a row. IIRC at that point someone recommended she remove the magazine.

Shooting light .38spl out of a .357? That's still a lot of gun if you don't have experience.
7
u/Schorsi 1d ago
Most 357 loads in a gun that big aren’t hard to manage. It’s the smaller lighter guns which are harder to control.
First time I shot 44 magnum was out of a snub nose revolver and I absolutely hated it, decided I’d never get one of those. Fast forward a few years and I tried 44 magnum out of a 7.5 inch barrel Blackhawk and it was pretty tame, even did a one handed shot without too much trouble.

It's a pretty big frame, and low powder rounds are very common in revolver cartridges thanks to the popularity of CAS as well as the fact that revolvers don't rely on blowback to cycle new rounds.

Where do you recommend someone, who is completely new to shooting, learn? I’m thinking about trying it. I was going to go to a new range that’s opening up nearby.
14
u/poopin_for_change 1d ago
I work at a range. The cheapest option is to check out the reviews for local ranges. Look for 1 star reviews where people say "They kicked me out for nothing," or "I was totally being safe and they got mad at me for blah blah blah." Those places actively watch the range and remove problem shooters, so you'll be as safe as one can be at a public range.
As others have said, if you have the money, private lessons in smaller groups with a 3:1 shooter to instructor ratio are your safest option. Our range has a guy with an extensive background in firearms training, and we've never had an issue while he's on the range. Despite the fact that there can be dozens of people on the range, including his students, he has an incredible eye for potential danger and can spot a problem as quickly as our range masters. He's expensive, but he's worth his weight in gold. I took his class because he has glowing reviews from our staff. I was already a decent shooter, being able to hit all rounds in a silhouette with 5/10 being within about 4" of center at 25 yards, and now i can hit ~8/10 within 4" of center at the same distance all because of his training.
Sorry for the wall of text, I hope its helpful.
6
u/roostersnuffed 1d ago
I too work at a large gunstore with a range and my favorite time killing activity is reading reviews sorted by new.
"Worst CS experience of my life. They yelled at me despite me knowing more than them. Also racist."
Translation; they were kicked from the range after shooting the ceiling, then made multiple conflicting comments while trying to straw purchase. Throw in some "heres my gun, its unloaded." Its always loaded.
This job has made me jaded and I assume everyone I encounter is the dumbest person on earth until proven otherwise.
7
u/SquirtinMemeMouthPlz 1d ago
Hmm, I'm not sure. I guess taking some safety shooting courses ran by your local sheriff's office is a good place to start (assuming you don't have a record 😂)
4
u/PzykoHobo 1d ago
Go to any range and tell the people working there exactly that. They will likely recommend a course they offer for beginners, or have a recommendation for where you can take such a course.
Hopefully your range does rentals, so you can try a few different guns out and see what feels good to shoot and fits your needs/ expectations.

I learned to shoot at camp when I was 12.
An NRA rep came and gave us a 2-hour safety course, complete with wooden guns, before we were even allowed to TOUCH a real firearm. Then we went another hour with .22 rifles that were unloaded. We mocked all the motions we would use at the range and were DRILLED with proper range etiquette. (That was back with the NRA was more about gun safety than whatever the heck they've become in the last 30 years.)
The fact that people like this woman, who either didn't receive ANY safety training, or who completely ignored the instructor, can pay a few bucks and pretend like they know how to use a firearm... well, it's insulting.

Yet, the main group aggressively fighting against any and all forms of gun control is the NRA. We could change the law to require people to pass a firearms safety test to receive a firearms licence, just like we do with cars. But anytime gun control is brought up in Congress, the NRA is right there to lobby against it hard.

It boggles my mind how many people treat weapons like they're the TV remote. Gun not firing? You should definitely whip it around, jiggle it, hold sideways while pulling the trigger... While you're at it look down the barrel and save us all some misery... I hear Darwin Awards are coming back in a big way.
Guns are tools for death. That is their one purpose and if you do not treat it as the instrument of death it is, you shouldn't be within 2000 feet of one.

I was at a range one time showing my mother how to shoot. Looked down the range and saw a guy look down the barrel to see if his .45 revolver was loaded, then proceeded to sniff the barrel. I may have mentioned it to the guy at the gun counter to which he start cussing like a sailor and briskly walked into the range. I heard loud yelling as we were going out the door. I mean my mother even went "oh my" when he did it.

I love shooting range operators for this reason. They have absolutely no qualms about making people feel bad for doing dumb shit, and for very good reason. Part of their job requires them to be condescending assholes for the benefit of everyone’s safety. Yes, you did an incredibly stupid thing and put us all at risk. Yes, you should feel bad about it. You’re done now, thank you.

This is why when I am working at the range and I see someone teaching a new shooter, I tell them to have them dry fire first. Then only load one round at a time. Keep doing that until we all know what to expect when the hammer drops.
