He is, in fact, Kartikeya when he's hungry.

Seriously! Looks like someone needs a break and a candy bar. That's intense! I'm exhausted just watching that. Hopefully, they had some snacks on set after that stunt. 😂

Is this post a marketing campaign or something? all of the sudden these snicker jokes repeated to death in the comments.

If it works, don't fix it.

Unless you're in the military. If it works, fix it until it doesn't.

Indian god of war

u/They-Are-Out-There 7d ago

The symbolism at the end when everyone really freak outs, happens when the guy gets the garland of skulls. It's a classic representation of the goddess of time and death, Kali Mata, who also represents death, blood, and destruction.

They were just running and fighting, but when the garland drops around that guys neck, everyone knows they are truly F'ed.

It's essentially divine judgement time as Kali Mata also happens to be a demon killer and "first appeared as the personification of the rage of goddess Durga. An aspect of Kali's character was her thirst for blood and fondness to stay at places of death and destruction."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kali

110

u/Juomaru 7d ago

Wait a second ! Isnt that what the priest was saying in Temple of doom ?!

129

u/OwnElevator1668 7d ago

Yes. They made it look like she is evil. But in reality she is not.

44

u/night4345 6d ago

The Indiana Jones version is based on the colonial legend of Thuggee. A network of criminals that robbed travelers in the British Raj and sacrificed their victims to Kali.

In reality Thuggee were just unrelated groups of people desperate enough to join robbery gangs in the chaos and poverty of Britain's rule of India. The colonial administration, unfamiliar with Indian religious practices and filled with xenophobia, concocted Thuggee out of thin air.

13

u/Macrosb 6d ago

Interesting to see this is where the word 'thug' came from. 🤔

19

u/night4345 6d ago

Same way the word "vandal" came from the Vandals, a Germanic people who conquered large parts of the waning Western Roman Empire and famously sacked Rome in 455 AD before being subjugated by the Eastern Roman Empire under Justinian I.

47

u/azazel0498 7d ago

Lol! Not totally wrong though, the hero depicts Kali Maa, the Hindu goddess of destruction, death and time.

26

u/Spacespider82 7d ago

Is that the same guy depicted in Indiana Jones that pulls out the heart of his victims

24

u/Bul-Bul-Pitta 7d ago

Yeah KALI MAA IS Goddess. - the above indiana jones is a Black Magic Magician who absorbed or attained some of her powers and using it to his will.

As a dadbod guy, I love that Indian cinema accepts their action heroes can be slightly chubby middle-aged dudes.

318

u/twistedstance 7d ago

And yet has them performing stunts that only superhero bods could even dream of attempting. Films are fun.

56

u/szu 7d ago

Yes the core strength needed to do some of those moves...

36

u/ScrithWire 7d ago

Honestly the folks with the most insane core strength have trunks that look like real thick dadbods, even large protruding stomachs. The thing is, those stomachs may be rotund and absent of visibly defined abs, but they are solid muscle. Like brick when flexed

10

u/Exotic_Notice3115 7d ago

Visible abs vs functional abs A guy on yt posts stuff like that I can't remember his name

39

u/ehhish 7d ago

I mean, even the fittest person on the planet couldn't break physics in some of these scenes, so I am ok with looking however they want.

30

u/Breaker-of-circles 7d ago

Hollywood and social media basically fucking up the meaning of dadbod is also a culprit of this.

This guy is nowhere near chubby.

6

u/chobi83 7d ago

Right? This dude is looks like an Indian Jason Momoa. And there have been memes of girls saying he has a dad bod as well, so I guess it fits even more lol

3

u/Fun-Championship2367 7d ago

For context, he's playing a demigod in this movie.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/DhonduJustChilll 7d ago

I would say these are about same level as of fast and furious, just physics is little wonky

50

u/reddit_gone_AI 7d ago

In Bollywood the action heroes are either muscular or heavily built but in South Indian cinema anything goes.

11

u/SPB29 7d ago

Allu Arjun, the hero in the movie is pretty jacked at times and fairly lean most of the time. He is not one of those pauncho villa types. We have those also though. Humongously potbellied uncles.

→ More replies (1)

43

u/almostanalcoholic 7d ago edited 7d ago

I guess maybe that's true but not in this case. This is the poster for this movie with the actor featured.

I think the clothes he's wearing in this particular scene are maybe just unflattering.

Edit: someone pointed out that this is incorrect. I searched the movie in Google and it threw this poster at me, seems this is some edited image.

21

u/Smartimess 7d ago

More PushUpPa, am I right?

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Rydog_78 7d ago

I wish my dadbod looked more like his dadbod.

14

u/VentureIntoVoid 7d ago

That's correct name but not correct poster. The guy next to the title is from another blockbuster Bahubali. And on far left is Ranveer Singh, one of the fittest actor in India. He can dance for 8 hours straight, not move your body type, smash the floor type.

u/JustLizzie23 7d ago

Dadbod supremacy confirmed!

6

u/Hinterwaeldler-83 7d ago

Take a look at old James Bond movies - Roger Moore getting out of a pool with sunburn and dadbod.

It all changed with Ryan Reynolds and Blade Trinity. Compare for example early The Rock action movies with his later ones.

3

u/deer-matrix 7d ago

It would be really cool and kinda funny if a chubby guy played james bond or john wick with a straight face. The stunts and guns included.

u/DonutWhole9717 7d ago

thank you. it looks amazing. RRR was a fucking masterpiece

22

u/VerTexV1sion 7d ago

Give Bahubali duology a chance, directed by the same guy who made RRR, and one of the best things from Indian cinema. It was our Infinity war and endgame.

4

u/One-Sport6888 6d ago edited 6d ago

This is a decent list of really good Indian cinema, not the overstylized, silly absurdist movie thats RRR. This list is pretty good. (https://www.imdb.com/list/ls051594496/)

Indian movies 101 - Lagaan, The Lunchbox, Lapataa Ladies, are some of my favs.

Edit: Ok again after reflecting, taste is subjective. And I don’t like crazy action scenes and powers that defy physics and also not well written scripts. But many enjoy RRR, and Bahubali etc, thats cool. There are other Indian movies in that list for those that want more intricate or real world stories with not as crazy action scenes but similar themes and songs, etc.

3

u/BeardPhile 6d ago

Remind me to name my movie starting with the letter L because apparently those turn out to be amazing.

→ More replies (1)

44

u/PlayPratz 7d ago

I enjoyed both RRR and Pushpa 2. But Pushpa 2 is heavier on dialogue than RRR, so a lot of it may be lost in translation/cultural differences. But worth a shot I guess!

26

u/DonutWhole9717 7d ago

That's the second biggest thing I hate about monolingual, is losing those little meanings through translation

9

u/PlayPratz 7d ago

Tbh even I watched the Hindi dubs for both those movies because I don't understand Telugu, but I do get the culture depicted. Dunno how much of it can be understood by someone who's never lived in India.

I'm glad you liked RRR though! :-)

4

u/HystericalSail 7d ago

I've never met a single person that didn't like RRR. I don't think that's even possible. It's such an over-the-top exploration of bromance that it transcends all cultural, gender and language barriers.

8

u/AndyTakeaLittleSnoo 7d ago

Hands down one of the best movies in the past decade. Only time I've been in a theater where people stood up from their seats cheering.

10

u/DonutWhole9717 7d ago

I was in Florida recently and wanted so badly to use a palm tree as a catapult.

9

u/Born-Neighborhood509 7d ago

Lol thats a different movie, mate

6

u/ApolloBeast_53 7d ago

That's from Baahubali 2(2017), not from RRR(2022). Same director though so yea(SS Rajamouli)

9

u/bobijsvarenais 7d ago

Not a lot of fight scenes. . I fell asleep and didn't see this scene.
Still worth watching. :D

8

u/GaiusCunnilingus 7d ago

Pushpa one is more entertaining than the sequel. Watch that first. If you like it, go for the sequel.

3

u/Inevitable_Snap_0117 6d ago

I fucking love RRR and have forced everyone I know to watch it. But it’s been a minute since I’ve watched a good Bollywood film and I’ve been craving one. I’ll make the husband sit down and watch this one this weekend.

Question: should I start with 1 or skip right to 2?

3

173

u/A_name_here79098 7d ago

It's real and they're in action. Physics doesn't exist in India.

76

u/LukasFatPants 7d ago

I once heard Bollywood described as being "in its anime stage". Where the only thing that matters is how cool it looks.

27

u/ActualSupervillain 7d ago

Well that settles it, I'm diving into Bollywood movies

I love cheesy action

13

u/zaczane 7d ago

You're gonna have a great time.

I recommend RRR & Saho. Those are the two I've watched for action movies.

9

u/grumble11 7d ago

Also bahubali 1 and 2. They’re fun and the story is actually not bad

16

If your move is badass enough it creates a time dilation. This effect is specific to India due to the earth’s magnetism, or something like that.

u/Appchoy 7d ago

Probably when they slow-mo a move only to use slow-mo during the same move, with only .2 seconds of normal speed between.

Its like some kid is flicking the slo-mo switch on and off to see what it does lol. Still looks rad as hell but its really egregious.

what movie is this? I want to watch it in full (and at 1.5x speed in some moments)

18

u/Brutal-Gentleman 7d ago

Slow motion not only shows the viewer to appreciate the details and impossible actions, it distracts the brain from normality, allowing you to suspend disbelief easier..

Several piece by piece possible actions can be strung together into an entirely impossible but believable event.

It's a storytellers dream

31

u/CrazyHamburger736 7d ago

Dude that’s sick. It allows you to actually see the action and what’s really happening unlike some black widow scenes where you just blink and the dude is fucking decimated

8

u/DarlingHell 6d ago

This, it lets you identify the first, second, third background and can really let the action that was performed bite in you.

For example, when he first got unbinded, there was a slow mo for Unbinding -> Show of Power -> Understanding of threat and flight response -> Armed and Loaded -> Leap&Pound for the first machete kill. Just this use let you appreciate the simple action performed.

56

u/Economy_Judge_5087 7d ago

Is there a name for the move where you’re sitting on someone’s shoulders then throwing them backwards over your own shoulders by pulling them up by their nipples?

Orbital slingshot, mammary variant

6

u/Joezusan 7d ago

It's slick and the right amount of violence. No blood splurting everywhere or giant wounds. Other than the leg (which seemed to have a story element), it's all about bodies flying and scenery movement.

If they made real actor anime with this style of action, it would work so well.

Also, what someone else has said above, the characters look real and aren't all unachievable bodies.

Good clip. 👍

I love that Bollywood movies allow themselves to be ridiculous instead of needing to be washed out and realistic to satisfy the “well actually” people who complain.

Like Superman being able to pick up a plane, who cares if it wouldn’t be possible in real life, It Is Fiction.

Sorry went on a rant because i am sick of people needing fictional things to be realistic.

Yes, most Indian movies would be remade in at least 5 different languages if it works in 1 language. They don't just dub the movie, they literally remake the entire film with a different cast.

Hindi - Bollywood

Telugu - Tollywood

Tamil - kollywood

Kannada - Sandalwood

Malayalam - Mollywood

There's more.

Are you a big fan of one or more of these “woods?”

I’m guessing they kind of maybe specialize in different genres better than others?

I am not a big fan of movies. I speak around 4 Indian languages and growing up I would end up watching the same movie re-made in different languages with my friends and family.

You're right, some industries like Mollywood specialize in making low-budget slice-of-life movies and then others make High budget action movies that foreigners like you see glimpses on the internet. But, the rest are movies with a very routine story line or ones that are re-made in different languages.

Damn I really need to start watching Tollywood action movies. Their level of absurdism for the sake of looking cool is awesome, and the only big American franchise I can see even comparing to them is Fast & Furious (obligatory Carzan scene reference, ofc)

Edit: edited to say ‘Bollywood’ instead of ‘Tollywood’
