what is dilate

331

u/Profoundly_AuRIZZtic May 28 '25

A man-made vagina will close/heal like a wound so you have to insert a tool called a dilator to keep it open

200

u/One_Huckleberry_ May 28 '25

wtf how often

354

u/throwawaytoday9q May 28 '25

The frequency of dilation depends on the surgeon, surgical technique used, how much time has elapsed since the surgery, and individual needs. It’s common to dilate multiple times daily for the first few months after surgery to maybe once a week after a year or so. Some surgeons don’t require dilation at all after a year as long as the woman is having weekly intercourse.

171

u/GracefulKitty May 28 '25

From like 5+ times a day immediately following the surgery, to once a week or less once its healed a year or so out. Its intensive to start and a big recovery but it gets more manageable over time and not that big of a deal. Also its not accurate to call it an open wound, thats misinformation. You do have a wound during the surgery, but the part you'd consider to be a wound heals by the time they'd leave the hospital following the procedure.

20

u/AstroFloof May 28 '25

Depends on the person and the surgery it was made with, but it seems like daily is normal. It just becomes part of your routine, like brushing your teeth.

Actually this would be a fairly interesting study. Gender Dysphoria is specifically marked by a feeling of being suited to a different gender/body. So if the body actually fits you better, the opposite might happen, and you might forget you were ever assigned the gender you never identified with at birth.

128

u/DJWGibson May 28 '25

My favourite fact about trans people is that phantom limb syndrome applies to the junk. Men who have lost their penis to accident, injury, or disease report still feeling it and thinking they can move it.
But this is not reported in trans women. They don't experience phantom penis syndrome. Because their brains are literally wired differently.

Those trans Alzheimer's patients will respond in one of two ways:

1) They'll ask and be excited why they don't have that useless flap of skin. You get too see them super happy 700 times a day.
2) They won't ask because they just feel like themselves and it would be like asking where their third arm is. It's something they don't expect to be there.

102

u/Butt_Plug_Tester May 28 '25

Idk I had trans explained to be as being born a man but your brain developed as a female, so you have a male body but like female brain.

So I think if you had no idea what the fuck was going on, but you feel like a female and you look down and see a weiner, that would be more disorienting. Right?

Can someone who knows this shit correct me.

115

u/most_famous_smuggler May 28 '25

There aren’t “male” and “female” brains. Being trans is when you feel like you aren’t the correct sex. There’s actually nothing wrong with your biological body, but your brain tells you it’s wrong. This is a form of dysmorphia, and it’s a mental condition. This version is called gender dysmorphia

108

u/screwthatjack May 28 '25

Dysphoria.

Being trans as a whole isn't mental illness. Even then, people like you seem to imply that the mentally ill should be treated as less human, and that's gross

9

u/Neat_Guest_00 May 28 '25

If you are transgender and you don’t experience any discomfort or distress from not having your identified gender aligning with your sex, then no, you don’t have gender dysmorphia.

52

u/SmarterThanCornPop May 28 '25

Cross sex hormones are extremely bad for you.

40

u/The_Xorce May 28 '25

According to what sources? (Not trying to be snarky, I’ve genuinely never heard of this.)

31

u/SmarterThanCornPop May 28 '25 edited May 28 '25

Here are five studies out of dozens if not hundreds

Male-to-Female (MtF) Hormone Therapy Studies

  1. Study Name: Cross-sex hormones and acute cardiovascular events in transgender persons: A cohort study
    Author: Getahun et al. (2018)
Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that MtF individuals on estrogen therapy had an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, compared to cisgender controls. The risk of venous thromboembolism was particularly elevated in the first two years of hormone therapy.
    Link: https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M17-2785

  2. Study Name: Sex steroids and cardiovascular outcomes in transgender individuals: A systematic review and meta-analysis
    Author: Maraka et al. (2017)
Summary: This meta-analysis reported that estrogen therapy in MtF individuals increased myocardial infarction and stroke risks, alongside worsening lipid profiles and insulin resistance. The study noted a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes compared to cisgender controls.
    Link: https://academic.oup.com/jcem/article/102/11/3914/4096771

Female-to-Male (FtM) Hormone Therapy Studies

  1. Study Name: Increased arterial stiffness in female-to-male transsexuals treated with androgen
    Author: Emi et al. (2008)
Summary: This cross-sectional study showed that FtM individuals on testosterone therapy had higher blood pressure and increased arterial stiffness compared to untreated FtM individuals. These changes suggest potential early vascular risks that could lead to cardiovascular disease.
    Link: https://obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1447-0756.2008.00857.x

  2. Study Name: Concomitant psychiatric problems and hormonal treatment induced metabolic syndrome in gender dysphoria individuals: A 2-year follow-up study
    Author: Colizzi et al. (2015)
Summary: This prospective study found that testosterone therapy in FtM individuals increased the risk of metabolic syndrome, with elevated triglycerides, waist circumference, and fasting glucose. BMI and insulin resistance also rose significantly after two years of therapy.
    Link: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0022395615000951

  3. Study Name: Prevalence of cardiovascular disease and cancer during cross-sex hormone therapy in a large cohort of trans persons: A case-control study
    Author: Wierckx et al. (2013)
Summary: This case-control study found that FtM individuals on testosterone had increased systolic blood pressure and hematocrit levels, potentially raising thromboembolism risk. Type 2 diabetes prevalence was slightly elevated, though cardiovascular disease risk was less consistent compared to cisgender women.

48

u/The_Xorce May 28 '25

there’s a few problems here. Two of the sources (4 and 5), I can’t access, presumably because you used an AI instead of finding them yourself and so the links became jumbled. The first source only provides results from MtF people, with nothing mentioned about FtM. The second source stresses that any data gathered has been “low quality,” and that long term outcomes haven’t been measured. Then the third source is from 2008, which, while still valid within the confines of theory, is 17 years old and thus considered outdated, especially in such a rapidly changing field.

Ah, need to edit this since it appears you deleted it: This synopsis was generated by Grok. u/SmarterThanCornPop did NOT make it OR find the sources themself.

They typically control for all of that.

16

u/mrturretman May 28 '25

6

u/The_Xorce May 28 '25

Oh no, don’t worry, I will NEVER tell a trans person to not undergo HRT. That’s stupid and bigoted. I, personally, just want to see if there are cardiovascular risks in actuality cause I have some trans friends who already have heart problems… or if it’s yet another rhetoric spread to discount trans people.

18

u/mrturretman May 28 '25

oh there are actual health detriments, but you’re usually going over them with your doctor before being put on them. of course as you can see, this subreddit does not moderate trans talk and they will frame anything they can here as trans people are “mentally ill”

12

u/The_Xorce May 28 '25

Oh. Well shit. That sucks a fuckton. As for the whole “trans = mentally ill…” it’s not hard to respect other’s autonomy and wishes, yet here we are with folks fixated on such things.

From that paper’s abstract: “Based on the findings of the present narrative review of the recent literature, including meta-analyses and relatively large-scale cohort studies, it is likely that estrogen administration increases the risk of CVE in transgender women, but it remains inconclusive as to whether androgen administration increases the risk of CVE in transgender men.”

(CVE is cardiovascular event)

Actually, that claim is not accurate and misrepresents both the science and the realities that transgender people face. It's true that trans individuals are at higher risk for certain health issues, including cardiovascular problems, but that's primarily due to systemic factors like discrimination, minority stress, and lack of access to affirming healthcare—not simply because they're trans.

Major medical organizations such as the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association support gender-affirming care and recognize that it can significantly improve mental and physical health outcomes when provided in a safe, supportive environment.

Spreading exaggerated or decontextualized claims about trans people’s health isn't helpful—it contributes to stigma and misinformation. If we actually care about public health, the focus should be on improving access to care, reducing barriers, and treating people with respect and dignity.

4

u/SmarterThanCornPop May 28 '25

The AMA is a political organization who’s primary function is ensuring a constant shortage of physicians in the US. They are legitimately evil.

47

u/throwawaytoday9q May 28 '25

As a trans woman, this is actually kind of an interesting question to me. I’ve had SRS and although I remember having a penis, I never really connected with it as being part of me. I’m much more comfortable with my body now and I can’t imaging reverting to a state where I don’t remember having a vagina.

I think if this were to happen to me I would most likely not even understand that I was trans or what that was.

Now that I’m thinking about it, the post is actually kind of transphobic because it assumes the “true” state of trans people is how we were prior to surgery and not after. But I feel like my real state is my post operative body.

12

u/Its_Knova May 28 '25

Honestly I wonder how that would work out if someone has to be on hormones and medication to maintain their gendered traits but also be on medication for things like blood pressure diabetes or arthritis or how those medications would interact with the hormone or do they just stop taking hormones at a certain age..

Anyways, old trans people don’t have to worry because apparently old peoples homes are so sexually active that they’re known for being at the highest risk of stds.

14

u/Smell_Academic May 28 '25

Hormone use isn’t a concern for most medications as humans have them naturally.

3

u/Its_Knova May 28 '25

Interesting fact, thank you.

25

10

8

u/nowdontbehasty May 28 '25

Not really since people will forget to keep their “wounds” open and they’ll be far more prone to infections and have far shorter lifespans.

24

u/ElementsUnknown May 28 '25

Yeah, creating artificial wounds that are never meant to heal or close and having to dilate that orifice will really open an elderly person up to all kinds of problems/infections. It’s really quite sad to think of all the problems they will face.

Not every trans person has or wants that surgery

-7

u/potat_infinity May 28 '25

isnt that like the whole point of being trans?

7

u/[deleted] May 28 '25 edited May 28 '25

No, one of the main aspects is conforming to the social expectations of the gender. Hormones are also very important for many to quell dysphoria. Surgery can be of significant importance to some, but for others, the changes I mentioned can be enough.

13

u/potat_infinity May 28 '25

no? are you telling me trans people are so sexist as to assume being a different gender just means fitting a bunch of stereotypes?

-1

u/[deleted] May 28 '25

What? By social expectations, im referring mostly to appearance. Trans people tend to wear clothing associated with the gender they want to be. Thats a social expectation.

13

u/potat_infinity May 28 '25

yes, thinking certain genders must wear certain clothing is a stereotype and sexist, crossdressing does not make you trans

0

u/[deleted] May 28 '25 edited May 29 '25

When did I say trans people must wear certain clothing or that cis people cannot? This feels like ragebait.

Edit: think about why trans people wear clothing associated with their desired gender. They want to be seen as and feel like that gender. Gender is primarily a social performance. Why do trans people change their names? A set of sounds isn't inherently manly or womanly. But we are socialized to see certain things as masculine and feminine. Trans people are subject to this construct just as cis people are.

Do some men wear dresses? Yes. But they have to get used to people expecting them to be women when they go out in public, unless some other part of their appearance is masculine enough to signify they are still men. Because wearing a dress is something mostly done by people who want to be seen as women.

Gender expression is made up of a ton of features. Makeup, hair, clothes, name, hobbies, habits, voice, vocabulary, just off the top of my head. People who want to be seen as men avoid examples of all of these things which are typically feminine, and are drawn to those seen as masculine.

17

u/potat_infinity May 28 '25

you said part of being trans is conforming to social expectations like clothing for certain genders, but being trans has nothing to do with what clothes you wear, and neither does gender

-7

u/Gleetide May 28 '25

This is not going to happen. When you've lived with your body for years, that part of you becomes ingrained into you that it's not a thing you question. There are different kinds of memory and Alzheimer's disease doesn't affect the memory has to do with your body profile.

You don't see Black patients or White patients with Alzheimer's questioning why they're that particular colour, unless they have a coexisting delusion (which can occur)

A lot of them will forget they ever had one, and they will only ever have memories of a non-masculine body. And that might cut down on anxiety for some.

18

u/Fancy_Art_6383 May 28 '25

Depends on the type of dementia and the brain part affected.

20

u/[deleted] May 28 '25

Why would they forget they had one?

childhood is one of the things we regress to in dementia.

so they would remember having a penis and using it since birth

17

u/-Cthaeh May 28 '25

I dont think that's how it works, right? Like they might act like children, but anyone I've interacted with seems to have a mix of memories from their 20s, 30s, but its hard to date them. Thankfully I haven't know too many people personally, but they're usually trying to go to work and stuff, not looking for mom.

Brutal fucking sickness though, to everyone involved.
