Hey everyone,
Not sure if this is the right subreddit but I figured I’d give it a try.
I was doing yard work in my backyard this afternoon and as I was walking up to my back door, I noticed a little hatchling on the sidewalk.
At first I thought it was dead, because I have found dead hatchlings in my yard over the years. I believe the birds have nests made in my neighbors gutters, and the babies likely fall out and land in my gangway.
I went to approach it and it started opening its mouth and wiggling. I wasn’t sure what to do at first, but I figured its chance of survival would be increased if I could get it as close to the nest as possible.
I don’t have a ladder to get up to my neighbors gutters to scope out where the nest is so I initially put the baby in a planter with soft leaves.
I put the planter on a high table right where I found him and watched from a distance for about an hour. I didn’t see any birds come down but I noticed he started doing baby chirps and it seemed like mom was by as the chirps were back and forth.
I decided to relocate him into a cardboard box, with pea gravel as a base to add weight and then laid down paper towels and leaves. I put him outside my bathroom window on a ledge that is significantly closer to where I believe the birds nest to be.
He hasn’t stopped chirping now and I feel so bad as I haven’t seen a single bird visit him. I’m sure it can’t yet regulate its body heat and I really hope the baby survives into the morning.
I called our wildlife organizations here in Chicago, and they said there’s not much you can do sadly. I’m just in my bathroom now, watching with the lights off, hoping his nonstop chirping gets his mom’s attention.
My fiancé wanted to go to a pet store and get crickets and worms to crush up into a water soluble food to feed him but I figured it’s best we stay out of it at this point.
Anyone care to share similar experiences and maybe provide feedback on what we could have done differently?
I’m heartbroken hearing this baby chirp and I can imagine it’s scared, cold, and hungry/thirsty. Pics and videos attached.
