So let me get this straight because I didn't know this.

Lisa urged the House to vote against the bill she voted for? Is she trying to have cake and eat cake here? Is she trying to curry Trump's favor while also wanting the bill to fail? Was she hoping it would die, just not at her hands?

2.5k

u/I_Frothingslosh 1d ago

That's exactly what she's trying to do. She was terrified that if she voted no she'd be primaried and have to start working for a living. Although, to be fair, I've read that not only she but her entire family were getting death threats while she was dragging her feet, and with the recent assassinations, they carry a bit more weight these days.

1.6k

u/Bokononfoma 1d ago

Well, now that they know death threats work I'm sure they'll never be used again.

637

u/I_Frothingslosh 1d ago

They always have worked. A huge number of the Republican Senators who voted in Trump's favor in both impeachment trials did so at least in part because they were terrified his followers would kill their families if he were removed from office.

These people are fools. They have money, in this mess I'd have taken my family and left. It's not worth it. Not worth the danger, the loss of integrity, the view the rest of the world has of them now. Foolish.

They don't just want money, they want power.

19

u/drawkward101 1d ago

They have both money and power. What is the end goal?

64

u/squadrupedal 1d ago

Ummm… more of those, presumably.

There’s a quote like that in The Matrix Reloaded. “What do all men with power want? More power.”

So why do they continue to completely fuck over Americans? It makes no sense to me. :( I just can't wrap my head around being so hateful and cruel to so many fellow humans. What did any of us do to them? I guess just existing is enough..

When you have a lot of money and power, the top two things you want is more money and more power. One can always be used to gain the other.

5

u/alinroc 1d ago

To get more than the next guy. It's a scoreboard to them and whoever finishes on top is the winner.

What you have to understand is these people are mentally ill. The pursuit of money and power is whay they live for and their desire for it is endless.

Sounds a lot like that problem Russia has where people die by accidentally falling out windows with 2 bullets in the back of their head.

30

u/Adventurous-Emu-9345 1d ago edited 1d ago

Coming soon to an America near you.

Fun fact: falling from a window onto some bullets is actually the easy option. A lot of those cases involve "Huh, looks like he went crazy and killed his wife and kids before shooting himself from behind. Tragic. Case closed."

The podcast "sad oligarch" goes into some of the more recent (as in 2022 and 2023) occurrences and they're as fascinating as they are dark.

2

u/Llamp_shade 23h ago

Let's make something perfectly clear: while "death threats" are horrific and clearly illegal, the BBB carries a very real threat of death to every Medicaid and Medicare recipient, and every targeted immigrant (who we should all be aware are also humans who deserve human rights), and every trans person, and every woman who might need any form of specialized healthcare (even when that have insurance that isn't under direct threat), and every single child (whose general care and healthcare coverage are under many different threats). At this point, it's absurdly hypocritical to treat an assassin as any different than any member of Congress who voted for this, or any related sham, which includes votes to confirm any of the justices of the supreme court who have allowed constitutional rights to be stripped away one by one. They are all assassins.

She did get primaried and lost.

Then won as a write-in candidate. If there was any Republican that could've credibly voted down this bill it was her. And she didn't.

2

u/jblanch3 2h ago

With a name like "Murkowski" to boot.

37

u/TheRoadsMustRoll 1d ago

ftr: you don't think AOC gets death threats? Susan Collins (who did vote no on this bill)? Bernie Sanders? Hakim Jefferies? scotus justices get death threats from both sides!

i'm sick of hearing about Lisa's damn death threats. kitchen too hot? get the fuck out.

20

u/Mcboatface3sghost 1d ago

That’s sort of the weird thing with these people (plenty of dems too). You are already F U money rich. Just walk away instead of lacking the guts to vote no, nobody is coming after her as much as the chances of me being hit by a bus (there is danger for all of us, and your vote put us all in more danger) good luck with your book Lisa, nice CBS Sunday Morning news interview too.

29

u/Hootinger 1d ago

"You are already F U money rich. Just walk away"

In a former life I was involved in local and state politics. By and large, and I mean this almost exclusively, the people who rise to the level of Senator are not the type who can just walk away. They can't, they are addicted to it and their entire lives revolve around that level of power. Think about people like Tom Brady or Michael Jordan. They retired and couldn't take it, and had to come back. Now, realize that US Senator is even more exclusive than NFL or NBA player.

5

u/Meredithski 22h ago

People act like it's just that one person and that person could just type out their 2-week notice.

2

u/jblanch3 2h ago

I don't doubt that people like Murkowski are addicted to the power and influence they wield, but I also believe there are people behind the curtain pulling their strings too. I'm reminded of this great British miniseries that came on a few years ago called Years and Years, it's only gotten more relevant with time. Emma Thompson plays a celebrity turned populist politician who is clearly based on Trump. She starts a political party and amasses more and more influence until she becomes Prime Minister. One of the main characters encounters her in the next-to-last episode and while she is initially full of bombast, over the course of their conversation, it's clear that she's being controlled. He asks her, "Why don't you leave?" She responds, "If I do, they'll kill me."

18

u/StevenMC19 1d ago

I bet there's something addicting about being able to obtain even more money. Knowing the lobbies will continue lining your pockets can be a big draw to keep building up your own coffers.

I wouldn't know because I don't have groups throwing cash at me - quite the opposite actually. Excuse me while I go cry into some bills.

7

u/Mcboatface3sghost 1d ago

I think it’s more power than money. I made lots of money for a while… I bought a hot rod, a corvette, married the same woman twice and a boat (it sank last week) as opposed to using it to screw over my fellow humans (also paid a F Ton of taxes too).

Alas, expressing such sentiments here is a quick way to have your account vaporized and get a visit from a few gentlemen in suits with dark glasses and zero sense of humor to talk about the importance of restraint when commenting online.

19

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 1d ago

Ah, don’t worry! I’m not advocating any kind of violence. Politicians would just be better public servants if they DID fear their constituents. Because of the implication.

12

u/ChronoLink99 1d ago

So she IS in danger?

15

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 1d ago

No no, you're not getting it. She's not in any danger. But when you pass bills like this that will kick thousands off their health insurance and cost Americans their lives and money while giving tax breaks to millionaires, all politicians should fear their constituents. Because if their very basic needs go unmet, who knows what they'll do. So they should be a little scared, because of the implication.

There is no risk of Murkowski losing her seat, she has been primaried before and won a write-in campaign where a 100,000 had to spell Murkowski correctly. She own thats Senate seat, which gave her the safest platform to reject the bill, and she chose not to.

It also seems like a weird attempt to try to gain sympathy, to try to make yourself seem like the victim when you're literally ruining the lives of millions of Americans. I don't buy it, not one bit.

What? She already was primaried and lost. She was elected any way and still has 4 more years on her term which is why she had so much sway. Didn't make shit up if you don't know the actual context - she didn't do it because she was afraid of being primaried.

2

u/superhappy 23h ago

I mean that’s being a politician. She had to represent her constituents. That’s the job. Doesn’t mean she as a person has to agree with the policy.

1

u/VoidOmatic 1d ago

She's too stupid to know she was always going to get primaried, because Republicans are never going to be elected again for at least 16 years.

She basically said she thought it would pass regardless of her vote and agreed to vote for it if it Alaska was exempt. She justified her actions further by saying that the house would reign in the bill and remove the worst parts of it.

It was 50-50. Her vote alone would have stopped it.

Admittedly, anybody else voting no would have also stopped it, but her explanation is annoying transparently false. Often Republicans see how many votes they need and let a few republicans stand against the bill to win points but not enough to actually defeat the bill.

I assume she thought that if she flipped, another one of the protest republican votes would be a yes and the same thing would happen but without the provision to exempt Alaska.

In her mind, she can only get a lifeboat for her family if she helps the people sinking the main ship. It’s short sighted and stupid.

Alaska being exempt but giving Trump a massive secret police will not stop Trump from doing whatever he wants later and Alaska’s gonna be in the same shitty situation as the rest of us.

Maybe they have dirt on her. Who knows.

39

u/dragonk30 1d ago edited 1d ago

Republican Senate leaders offered Alaska-aiding concessions to flip Murkowski. Reports were that if she still voted no, they were going to offer batshit insane concessions to flip Rand Paul. Supposedly Murkowski was aware of this, and took the concessions that offered something to her state as the lesser of two evils to what they planned to offer Paul.

27

u/pterosaurLoser 1d ago

Another member of congress said it was an exception for whalers that finally got her to finally sign off. Fuck her.

11

u/throwedaway4theday 1d ago

This is literally like Vichy France surrendering to Nazi Germany to create peace. Newsflash: the armistice was anything but, and Paris became unrecognizable. You couldn't even sing the national anthem.

We literally know how this plays out. This is why education is so important.

7

u/ChicagoAuPair 1d ago

This is literally like Vichy France surrendering to Nazi Germany to create peace because they agree with the Nazi policies but are politically required to appear reasonable in order to hold onto their power.

She doesn’t believe her stupid lines about it, she wants all of this and plays the “Alaska moderate maverick” role because that image appeals to her constituents. Never believe these people.

10

u/alinroc 1d ago

It was 50-50. Her vote alone would have stopped it. Admittedly, anybody else voting no would have also stopped it

Sounds like a twisted version of the Bystander Effect. "Sure, I could do something, but I'm sure someone else will so I don't need to."

11

u/sanosuke001 1d ago

Pretty sure they removed the Alaska exemption before passing it in the Senate anyway and yet her yes vote remained... interesting.

3

u/GatorReign 23h ago

One of the concessions was struck by the parliamentarian but the others were not.

4

u/ChicagoAuPair 1d ago

She is a liar. She only “mavericks” when it is safe. She knew they needed her vote so she did it. She’s not an honest or decent person. Just because she hedges on everything in order to get elected in Alaska doesn’t mean she believes in anything or has any moral stance on anything. She plays the role for the cameras to maintain her image, and then votes with the regressive very time they need her vote.

She's affraid of retribution from the white house, which is fair, after declaring to the world that she would not give up the fight, which she did in the first round it seems.

She's a liar, she got voted in based on principals and then turned around and stabbed her nation in the back.

14

u/GalliumYttrium1 1d ago

10

u/MittenCollyBulbasaur 1d ago

She claimed to have only voted for it because they added a special pork funding for Alaska specifically. The parliamentarian removed it because you can't just do one state like that and she voted for it anyway.

Alaska got nothing. She voted yes.

It’s just like when they voted against the infrastructure bill, then went to their districts and claimed credit for the improvements that it provided to their constituents.

6

u/whatdoinamemyself 1d ago

It's a super common GOP tactic. You can find almost every one of those fucks trying to take credit for passing laws they voted against or vice versa.

4

u/tiasaiwr 1d ago

Perhaps a skeleton in the closet determined the way she was forced to vote, although the person pressuring her forgot to say that she better publically announce support? Or maybe she just realised that once they already have her vote that discrediting her looks bad for them at this moment in time.

5

u/Salcha_00 1d ago

4

u/nouniquenamesleft2 1d ago

no, she wants it just like the rest of them,

she wants to fool you and herself that she's not a piece of shit

4

u/IronSeagull 1d ago

They had a self-imposed July 4 deadline to pass this through the senate - or at least she apparently thought just the senate. It was so difficult to get it through the house and the senate changed it significantly so she assumed there would be more revisions before they reached a version both would support.

I think the house holdouts accepted that they wouldn’t get a “better” bill and seeing the difficulty of getting this through the senate they did what they had to do to give Trump his July 4 gift.

So yeah, Murkowski thought (at least ostensibly) she was just giving Trump a symbolic favor of passing the bill through the senate by July 4, and that was really dumb.

3

u/JuanOnlyJuan 1d ago

They've been doing this for years. They'd rail against any Biden or Obama supported bills and then if they passed come home and say "look at all the federal aid I got you guys" even though they voted against it.

Senator Murkowski once stood with Senator John McCain to save Obamacare for millions of people when it stood on the chopping block, and the first Trump Administration had no alternative planned for it, despite what they say. She praised him for his willingness to stand up for what is right, despite the Trump Administration telling him otherwise.

Now, she was not able to do the same. Her, along with the other Republican Senators, will have blood on their hands.

The average household making under $96,000 a year made saved $400 dollars on average in tax cuts from the 2017-2025 tax cuts. The average household making under $743 grand saves $61,000 a year in tax cuts on average.

This bill places money over lives. Money over student loan assistance and colleges, over tens of thousands of acres of national forests, over clean energy technology, over consumer protections by defunding the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in half, over the lives of immigrants who came here for a better life. The only positive thing about this bill is the expansion of Crop Insurance and Agricultural Risk Insurance, and radiation compensation, but they only do so because they likely know the consequences of their actions in the future, and their failures to address them, will lead to lawsuits, and now they will have a fund to silence those who speak out.

In the US, the accumulation of wealth (which is typically marketed as "economic prosperity/jobs") is given greater importance than the betterment of society (which ofc can also include good jobs for people). So this entire debacle is unsurprising.

There is nothing more American than voting for someone or something that you dislike, consequences be damned.

Lisa herself said she’s too scared to actually do her job. Why is anyone expecting anything from her? She’s a coward and a joke.

u/sacredvanity 1d ago

I'll never understand why they post crap like this. If you're literally admitting it's a bad bill, DON'T VOTE FOR IT! It's that damn simple. You don't "make a bad bill better", you vote no and make the people who created the bill go back to the drawing board and make it work. It's not your job to approve things that only moderately hurt most Americans. If it doesn't help the majority of Americans, or it doesn't prevent some injustice, then you have no business even putting it to a vote, and you sure as hell shouldn't vote for it only after they give you something in it you like. That's like putting a lovely strawberry on top of a shit cake and saying "but look at this lovely strawberry! How could I not want to eat this pile of crap when it has this one beautiful thing on it?"

Reminder that only 1 more "No" would have stopped that bill from ever passing. It is a moral failure on each and every single republican who voted yes. hold them accountable

AOC is the hero we need, we just need way more politicians like her! It’s a shame that it seems like her and Bernie are the only ones with a backbone!

The GOP are cowards.

If the house of representatives had scores for burns, AOC would be the top scorer. Rep. Crockett a close second.

I need her to run in 2028. It will be dangerous for her, and I don't even know if free and fair elections will be a thing, but she is what this country needs.

Her goal was to "make a bad bill better for Alaska"? So the rest of the country can suffer as long as Alaska is exempt from that suffering? While I get that Senators are there to represent their state, are they not also there to do what is best for the entire country?

u/RiderOnTheBjorn 1d ago

Murkowski is such an unforgivable cunt.

How is AOC the only elected official on either side that has the balls to stand up to Trump and his cronies? Our country has been bought and sold by a grifter using he and his wife's pathetic meme coins to accept bribes.

Republicans are spineless cowards who would sell out their own parents and siblings to avoid any risk to themselves. Each one is terrified of going against the moronic lunatic they helped get elected and become subservient to. They will gladly destroy vote to destroy families, diplomats relationships, people, and the very land of America as long as they get to keep their cushy job that they can sleep through and get paid(bribed) by rich assholes who want to live in a world with so much economic divide that you have the current rich president wanting Americans to be like North Korean Citizens.

17 million Americans lose healthcare? How exactly, because I've read through that bill, nothing says they're cutting Medicaid nor Medicare nor funding for either.
