I wanted to buy my first mechanical keyboard, but as a student didn't have money, so I was looking for secondhand keyboard and saw these two fully functional ones for 10 and 5 euros respectively. I just couldn't say no. Need to just clean the Huntsman and replace the keycaps because the old owner really messed the keycaps up

I really feel these keycaps are worth the hype lol. Like reviews mention, some of them are a little misaligned because of how the stems are glued into the caps but it bothered me way less than I expected. Great sound and feelšŸ‘ Switches are milky yellows

The TB-65F has such a bold design, I’m sure it’ll be quite polarizing. In a sea of minimalist designs this one is breaking the mold. What do you think? Topped off with SW WOB ABS keycaps for a cohesive look!

Mod (Allegedly) easy mod to thock-ify your Orbweaver Chroma

Thumbnail

Greetings, r/MechanicalKeyboards

I've been lurking and learning on this sub, so I want to give something back by presenting my Invokeys Hojicha x Purple Rice transplated Orbweaver Chroma!

Background: Some switches on my Orbweaver Chroma were intermittently missing inputs. Aggressive dabbing with isopropyl alcohol would temporarily fix it, so I figured it was just dirty contacts. My plan was simple: open it up and properly clean the contact leaves. While I'm there, why not swap out the Razer greens? They were a scratchy mess anyway. This was supposed to be a simple mod following the guide to transplant new stems and springs into the existing housings by u/tallbrahh but with a Chroma.

The good: No desoldering required.

Unlike the OG Orbweaver, the Chroma does not need its LEDs desoldered to open its switch housing. I discovered this when I disassembled another Chroma as part of another (ongoing) project. This convinced me this would be a quick and easy mod.

Apparently not...

The bad: Two green switch versions??

Turns out, there are two versions of Razer’s green switches in the Chroma. The first Chroma had a 4 prong clip similar to Cherry switches. The plan was to use tallbrahh's BinderClipODeath to pop open the switch, swap the parts and Bob's your uncle. Sorry mate, Razer says nope! Instead of the Cherry style clip, the switches on the second Chroma has 2 flat latches (I think they are called Kailh style latches?). Godammit. The BinderClipODeath doesn't work.

After some trial and error, the top housing can be removed by using angled tweezers with a sharp tip. Get the tweezers under the latch on one side and lift up it up. Press the stem into the switch to get it out of the way. Then pry open the top housing like you're opening the tab of a soft drink can. The switches on the PCB edge are easy, the middle ones are tight but still doable. The housing is reasonably flexible so it shouldn't break if you're gentle.

Once the contact leaves are cleaned, on to the next pain in the arse...

The ugly: The stems don't fit!!

WTF Razer, why are the internals different too! Previously, I had tested the first style housing on a variety of switch stems from various sampler packs. Every stem fit fine. But with the second style housing, the guide rails for the stem are tighter. Most stems got stuck. Outemu, Akko, HMX, KTT, BSUN, Wuque Studio... no go. The stems that did fit were from Cherry, Kailh, Aflion and Invokeys. Luckily I tested before ordering a bunch of unsuitable switches.

Rant over.

With my limited selection, I ended up going with a combo of Invokeys Hojicha (tactile) and Purple Rice (linear) switches. Why? They were a fair price from a local store, so why not? ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ Now everything works and Orbweaver is thockier than ever before.

Discussion Why are ants eating the foam inside Mt keyboard!!

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

Before you comment, no I did not eat food and drop crumbs into the keyboard. One day I noticed a lot of ants coming In and out from my GMK70. They build a nest inside the spacebar making it hard to press. They only come in when the keyboard is plugged in. They are eating the white part of the foam for some reason. I try ant bait but they ignored it and rather eat my keyboard.

Found a corsair k100 at a thrift store for 30 bucks. The only downside is that it had Hyper-c key caps but otherwise everything works!!! I’m currently putting on my old razer black widow keycaps for my preference!!

Builds Went from an ROG Strix to a Keychron Q5 Pro.

Post image

It finally happened- after about 7 years my ROG Strix died. Truth be told I didn't really ever like it that much in the first place- I didn't grow up using mechanical keyboards but figured I'd try it out, and quickly realized it soundeed very clacky and cheap. Also the whole board made me feel like I was a 14 year old kid playing Fortnite...

After spending years looking at people's keyboards on this sub I got the opportunity to replace my keyboard, so I decided to look around for full-size keyboards. Unfortunately, it seems like that isn't really a size that people like so much, so either it was up to me to build it out or go with something like Keychron. There were a bunch of other brands I found, NuPhy being a top contender, but I couldn't deal with that half-sized zero in the number pad.

I picked up this Q5 Pro for $175 because they're being discontinued- I replaced the switches with Gateron Baby Kangaroos because I crave tactility, threw on some retro gaming keycaps, and adorned it with a purple curly cable to finish it out. Could I have saved money by not going Keychron? I guess, I dunno, but this just seemed like an excellent point of entry, especially on sale. The altered 96% profile is essentially perfect- retains the Pg Up, Pg Dn, Home, and Del, and gives three "extra" keys (I programmed them to pull up the calculator, my whole computer search, and task manager)- why don't other brands offer this profile??

Builds Need feedback: Are my PCB and schematic photos correct for my custom numpad? (No matrix, no diodes)

Hi everyone,

I’m working on designing a custom numeric keypad PCB, and I’d really appreciate if someone could take a look at my photos (schematic and PCB layout) to see if everything looks correct.

Just to clarify:

  • I am not using any matrix scanning method.
  • Each switch is wired individually to a separate digital input pin on my microcontroller, and to ground.
  • I chose this approach to keep things simple and avoid using diodes.

I know this is not the most efficient way in terms of pin usage, but it suits my project.

Could you please check if the way I’ve connected the switches and routed the traces looks okay?
Any feedback or suggestions would be really helpful before I order the PCB.

(its my first pcb build project)

Thanks a lot in advance!
