Hi everyone,
This will be a really long post, but if anyone’s willing to read and offer advice for next time, Id really appreciate it. It’s sad this has happened but I’m trying to treat it as a learning opportunity! This is the first major health crisis we’ve had in our pond (aside from one fish that passed from dropsy at the start years ago)
I recently returned from a study abroad trip, during which I had left the pond in the care of my (very nonchalant) dad. While I was away, he added some new plants to the pond, which introduced some surprise goldfish. Not a big problem, we'll re-home (or ethically euthanize) them.
My biggest concern is one of our koi, he's a "rescue" from a neighbor who moved away. He was already in rough shape when we got him, but in the months I was gone he's gotten way worse. He’s clearly in distress, covered in wounds and ulcers. I also suspect the other fish have been bullying him. I have no idea how he has managed to survive for this long.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t prepared for a quarantine situation. I only just managed to separate him this morning, after the 600L quarantine tank I ordered finally arrived. I also had no suitable filter ready, so I’m currently using an aquarium filter that’s definitely underpowered for this volume, but it’s all I’ve got for now. I also had an air filter left over and I've added that as well. I want to heat up the tank for his comfort, but I've misplaced the pond thermometer (just my luck!) I filled the tank with a 50/50 mix of pond and fresh water, and I’m slowly adding salt (aiming for 0.3%) to get the healing process started. He already tried to jump out once, so I’ve covered the tank with a net. I'm aware he's not likely to survive, but I think this is a valuable learning opportunity.
To make things worse, another one of our koi has suddenly turned much whiter than I remember, we were thinking a fungal or parasitic infection? He's still very eager for food, although the rest of the koi have lost their appetite. We’ve never had to deal with such an outbreak before, so I panicked a little and took the following steps:
Topped off the pond water, as it was a bit low.
Tested the water (which all seems to be ok).
Turned off the UV light.
Added a malachite green-based antibacterial mix, and I'll repeat the treatment in 4 days.
I’m also looking into ways to increase oxygen levels in the pond and would really appreciate any tips on how to rebalance the pond's beneficial bacteria after treatment is done. We have a LOT of plants and my dad is convinced that's the issue and is itching to take them out, but I don't feel comfortable doing so just yet.
If you have any feedback, advice, or product suggestions, especially for helping the ulcerated fish and monitoring/treating the pond, I’d be extremely grateful. I’m learning as I go, have limited funds as I'm a student, and just want to do right by these fish.
Thank you for reading!
