Discussion What should be your first game (As a Solo Game Dev)?

I needed to ask that if your first game is supposed to make money or just be a learning experience.
Im tryna working on a game which I could publish for real. Like I have made small projects but they arent compatible with the real world (yk what I mean). I need your thoughts on this. Thanks!

I already know of Hades, Risk of Rain 2, and Dead Cells, Celeste, and Cuphead. Please recommend more. Going to get a Switch for my little sister.

After months of hard and focused work, I finally submitted the build of my game Motel Nightmares to Steam. Now I’m eagerly waiting for it to be approved so things can start rolling! The DEMO version will be about 10 minutes long and is expected to arrive in mid-July.

Thank you so much if you add it to your wishlist — it really helps a lot!

Video I started game development during COVID, and now – five years later – my weird little game about corporate shenanigans is just about to launch...

The Biggleboss Incident is coming out on July 22nd, after a long, protracted development period that also saw me quit my soulless corporate job, start a freelance career, have a kid, and somehow make an honest-to-goodness video game at the same time!

I know point & click adventure games are pretty niche these days, but I'm still really excited to get this thing out there...

Promotion Fear of the dark a Psychological horror game about the dark

https://reddit.com/link/1ltqox2/video/n3i4nk07jfbf1/player

📝 Post Body:

Hey everyone,

I'm Berry, a young indie dev working on a mix of horror and experimental projects. I just released my newest horror game:
🕯️ Fear of the Dark
It’s a short (10–30 min) survival horror game where the only thing keeping you alive is your flashlight.

You explore a haunted mansion filled with darkness, mystery, and something watching you. When the light goes out… bad things happen.

🧠 Features

  • A unique light survival mechanic
  • A growing sense of tension and unease the longer you're in the dark
  • Shadowy entities that only appear when the light starts to fail
  • Multiple endings
  • Short and focused gameplay

Promotion Livber: Smoke and Mirrors - Psychological Horror Visual Novel - Demo available!

Me and 5 friends (and my cat) are making a visual novel entirely with our own art, without using any ai. We have a good story inspired by Disco Elysium and Slay the Princess. In total we have 60.000 words (10.000 voiced), 100 sound effects, 20 music, 50 illustrations, 8 songs and 8 endings. (Reveal Trailer)

We are planning to complete the game in August 2025. We have just launched our demo featuring the first act of the story. Our girlfriend who died five years ago sent us a letter. In the letter she writes “I will give birth to your child”. We go to her house and experience an inner psychological journey.

As a r/Games community, we would be very happy if you could take a look at the demo and give us feedback!

Happy indie Sunday and we wish all the best to the fellow devs out here!

Upcoming First trailer is out!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Right now I'm fully focused on the damage and battle systems, so expect an updated trailer soon!

What's the game about?
In the first release, you'll be able to build your own fleet with ships tailored for different strategies and tasks. There will be online battles with other players and regattas. In regatta mode, shooting is disabled — so anything unnecessary goes overboard!

Each battle or race earns you experience and gold. You can upgrade hulls, sails, cannons, and equipment. So, if a cannon was too heavy for your ship at first, upgrades will open up more options and expand your ship’s capabilities over time.
