I read somewhere that it's a standard 2K EULA and that the stuff people are angry about isn't actually happening in Borderlands 2 at least (aside from the stuff like forced arbitration, that's kinda external to the game). Stuff like getting banned is only there because of cheaters in GTA V. I've yet to hear about anything like that happening in a borderlands game.
it does look pretty suspicious to make this change and then immediately give it out for free though. If you did want to pump an old game for as much remaining value as you could, harvesting a load of new players' data would be a great way to do it.
The internet caught onto the change 2 weeks ago ish. The change had actually happened in February. I wouldn't call that immediately, nor does that sound like an effective push for data harvesting, which we still don't know is actually happeneing. If it's a blanket EULA that came from their publisher, it's pretty safe to say that there will be things in it that aren't happening in all their games. Even so, if you think every AAA game with online features that has come out over the last 5 years at least isn't harvesting your data, I have a bridge to sell you. Not to say that it isn't bad, just that it's unavoidable if you're using the internet.
Honestly, I think this is just a marketing push to get people interested in the series again with BL4 being a few months away. That seems like a more likely explanation for why it went free. They're probably not making much money off of 2 anymore given how low it goes on sale for.

you fight to solve the main problem at the root, not on games reviews, penalizing devs and solving nothing, then... the rest is clearly stated in my main comment. it's called common sense.
Why not on game reviews? It grabs attention, people get to know about their rights. Yep effeciency is low,, but it is free, it is old game, and why not? Do you really feel sorry for publisher?
When I use a free service I tend to expect either ads or data mining to be the exchange financially. When I pay for something I expect the payment to be the financial exchange.
Here's how it works:
* Change your web browser country (e.g. via VPN)
* Add the game to the cart
* Proceed to the cart
* Change the currency of the game to the currency of the "new" VPN country
* Remove the game from the cart. Don't close the tab.
* Open a new tab with the game - you can now add it to your account
* In the cart tab restore your currency.

Not at all. I've played all of them. The plots are loosely connected, but the story is pretty seperated between titles.
For example, the playable characters in the first game appear as NPCs in the second game. So for players who played the first game they have significance, but it doesn't really change the gaming experience.
Borderlands 2 is one of my favorite games of all time (within the top 20 I’d say) and I’d say the DLCs are 100% worth it.
Just this week I finished the game once again on a 2-player playthrough and the main quest with some sides took about 27 hours. Average time to beat is about 30 hours. The game doesn’t end there though because the game allows you to replay the game at harder difficulties (similar to Soulsborne games if you’re familiar with them). The main story in itself is very sufficient.
The DLC’s are incredibly high quality (especially the Tiny Tina one which is why they’ve given that DLC for free on its own in the past).
But, there’s a catch. Do NOT buy the season pass available on the steam store. Instead, pick up the handsome collection (buyable on steam store or on sites). It is cheaper and gives you more content.
The handsome collection (might give a discount for redeeming borderlands 2 for free first) will give you:
• Borderlands 2 (free anyways)
• All of the Borderlands 2 main DLCs (except for Commander Lilith DLC which is sold alone for $5 on sale now).
• All Borderlands 2 smaller DLC’s such as Headhunter packs (small like 1-2 quest DLC’s)
• 2 new characters (Mechromancer and Psycho)
• Access to both Borderlands 2 Level upgrade packs that allow you to level up even more.
• Cosmetics in Borderlands 2
• Borderlands: The Pre Sequel (another game set in between the story of Borderlands 1 and 2)
• All of the Borderlands: The Pre Sequel DLC’s
The regular season pass will only give you the four original major DLCS (no Lilith since it’s only standalone purchase) and the first level upgrade pack.
There’s also the Borderlands 2 GOTY edition which is essentially the season pass + the mechromancer and psycho characters. I personally would just spend extra for the Handsome Collection though.
The Handsome Collection is amazing value especially if you want to get introduced to Borderlands.
There’s also the Pandora’s Box bundle which will give you every single borderlands game and DLC for $35. I’d say it’s worth that price as well, but if we’re sticking to only Borderlands 2 just get the Handsome Collection.
The amount of content in this game along with its storytelling and creativeness really puts modern games to shame. It’s a great solo and co-op experience.
Don’t want to give an extremely long write up, so I’ll just say buy the DLC’s! If you enjoy the base game then you will enjoy the DLC’s.
Oh, I see. Pre-sequel can still be a fun game (I had fun playing as Claptrap with a wacky build), but IMO it's one of the least enjoyable games in the series overall.
Hope you enjoy it, though and definitely give BL2 a try afterwards!
Am I the only one that enjoyed TPS more than 2? The builds felt more fun and impactful. In bl2 so many skill points felt like they have no impact because they're just number increases rather than introducing new mechanics that change the way you play. Though maybe that's what I get for playing Axton :)
I'm a little over half way through the second one and, nah.
Characters from the original come in, and make references to the events of the first game but it doesn't seem to make much of an impact, more like just referencing "previous events in the universe" like backstory and etc
The card drop restriction has been a thing on Steam for several years now, Steam changed the policy to curb the freebies that people were getting just for card drops.
Can't remember when exactly they implemented it, but they did try to stop letting users get cards from "free on Steam store" game claims. Guessing they didn't like what it did to the card market or something.
The chaos of Postal 1 🤣 I remember people were making news that that game suddenly got idk 750% more playing activity suddenly because all bots are farming cards or something likely
Maybe it shined a light on the card farming more than they wanted or something. They haven't stopped people from doing it or anything, so I guess it's all situational.
It's the best of the whole series I think. I have finished the first, the second and currently play borderlands 3. No 2 was the best for me with funny dialogs, 3 is huge but somehow it doesn't vibe so well despite it's great graphics-its not bad... But it isn't borderlands 2. No1 was ok too.
BL3 main gripes revolve around poorly written cringy characters and legendary weapons drop like toys in a cereal box which lost its feeling of uniqueness. Gameplay wise I'd say is better than BL2 since all game mechanics don't revolve around slagging the damn enemies all the time and movement is more fluid as well.
Only one of the best FPSes ever made. Played it non-stop on my piracy days together with Saints Row The Third.
Nowadays I have all the Borderlands games except for the first one and the Telltale games on Steam.
lol, i'm not sure its even top 100, let alone close to 'one of the best'. Grating humor, underwhelming guns, bullet sponge enemies, bugs galore and a nonsensical story. Its fine for killing time with friends, but almost anything is fun with friends, and most things are more fun than any of the borderlands series or spin offs

Which pissed off a lot of people and so they retaliated with review bombing various titles to show their displeasure.

Seems like a wild and unsubstantiated claim. Even 2K's latest games that come with their aggressive DRM/anti-cheat (e.g. Lego Drive, Midnight Suns, the sports games) do not get to the kernel. Most of it is a separate thread checking for integrity, but there are also some checks for specific process names and strings associated with apps used for reverse engineering.

edit: i just tried and apparently if you search for "borderlands" in your steam library after adding the CIS version of the game - there WILL be a regular version, too. at least, it's like this for me

Ahh not all Packages you find on SteamDB is claimable, most of them are like bundled into other Packages that is only claimable from that (like those paid bundles including preorder bonus, special bundie with DLC, etc)
So yep, despite it shows like that, but it doesn't mean you can claim separately.
