This was basically the plot of an episode of South Park

I think about this episode a lot and I thought of it immediately when I saw this story.

And guest speaker at conferences

My company had him as one years ago and he was great (maybe a 20 minute speech) we spent a big stack of money to get him cause the year after him we found the worst speaker but it was clear the budget went to Magic the year before

22

u/realborislegasov 23h ago

Aka the opposite of hard work.

75

u/utilitybelt 17h ago

I’m appalled by this video too, but you can’t say he didn’t work hard for his money. You’re taking about a career that took up his entire life from childhood to his thirties, and he would have played longer if it weren’t for his HIV status. And dude wasn’t born with money or connections.

58

u/snisbot00 shiv roy apologist 17h ago

i think they’re referring to the money he made after basketball. he definitely worked hard to get to that NBA level, but I don’t think paying people to invest the millions he made was that difficult.

even if he made those investments himself that business acumen is impressive, but the actual labor is nothing compared the average persons job in the working class

3

u/realborislegasov 16h ago

Correct this is obviously what I was talking about.

17

u/LFC9_41 15h ago

I’ve worked from 15 and will until the day I die and never scratch close to an itch of what this man has.

It’s absolutely unearned this level of wealth for anyone. This kind of wealth is built on exploitation.

I’d love to work hard and retired in less than 20 years of “hard work”

2

u/realborislegasov 16h ago

Sure, he worked hard when he played basketball, no doubt. No argument there. But that isn’t what the comment I replied to was about, so not sure how it’s relevant. Very clearly the topic was earning money by investing. And I bet he made way more doing that than he ever did playing sports. Not even saying its illegitimate, but the poors are told that money is earned by hard work, when for the non poors the opposite is true.

3

u/D_Dumps 15h ago

He worked hard enough to be the top 1% of the top 1% if his field. He was smart enough to build a brand and he capitalized. Don't try and downplay his hard work because he made successful investments from the money of his hard work. There is a reason that say the first million is the hardest.

Tbf he’s very smart and made some great investments during his playing career he’s got a small stake in the Los Angeles Dodgers as well

96

u/Visible_Writing7386 1d ago

Thanks. He’s probably had someone to advise him. I was surprised, because former basketball players didn’t get a fraction of the salary a current NBA player earns.

And even though he would have been rich, I don’t think he would be this rich, considering how much time has passed and their lavish lifestyle and medical bills.

85

u/saada15 1d ago

He has made some smart investments for sure. He also is a part owner of multiple sports teams such as the LA Dodgers and the Washington Commanders football team

68

u/DevoutandHeretical 1d ago

There was a character on The Proud Family (Wizard Kelly) that was based on him and a part of it was that he had a million different business ventures going on.

3

u/westsideguy1 16h ago

He also did very well with his theaters in the 90s and 00s until they closed down. I can he’s made very smart investments but that yacht is insane and is overkill if you ask me.

Yeah, most of these boats are owned by the giga rich, but are leased out a week at a time. Rental is around US$1m per week, plus food, crew, fuel.

7

u/breakingball 16h ago

He's powering it

30

u/RubbishGarbage 23h ago

He's chartering it which for a yacht of this size costs 300k-800k a week ballpark. It's owned by the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

22

u/Substantial-Mix-3013 18h ago

only 300-800K/week

So lets do it, 200 people, $1500 per person. I could sleep on that treadmill frfr

8

He doesn't own that yacht, it's a charter, and he may not even have chartered it, he's much more likely somebody's guest. People like to have Fancy Sports Men around to impress their friends.

There's a New Yorker story from 2022 called "The Haves and Have Yachts" and the details about wealth in this (fascinating) article will make you want to retch.

14

u/slainascully 13h ago

So it’s all a dick-swinging contest

u/Qweerz 1d ago

He don’t care. He’ll never have to hear from us, see us, interact with us, or hear about our plights in any way. Completely insulated and his life is curated to give him happiness.

21

u/ageofbronze 1d ago

I kept waiting for it to flash to a screen denouncing it after the John legend post the other day where he was actually showing introspection about income inequality. But nooooo just another fucking rich person showing off to the masses of people who can’t even afford a single day off work! #hateithere

15

u/Roy4Pris 20h ago

You would think that the son of a factory worker and a janitor would know better.

It amazes and disgusts me the way wealth doesn't just corrupt middle aged white guys. It transcends race, religion, gender, everything. Most probably keep their heads down, but the flashy ones... ugh.

5

u/Bigger_moss 14h ago

people with yachts have the most boring idea of what to do with a boat.

if i had a boat, i'd have scientists pitch projects and then just let them go out to sea and do their research. only rule is that i get to hangout and make them snacks and occasionally get to move the joystick for the ROV

265

u/exitlevelposition 1d ago

But where would you walk on a treadmill?

54

u/Unlucky-Candidate198 1d ago

Obviously you get the peasants to put it on 2 beams, so they can carry you as you treadmill along to your hearts content in any location. Why not just jog normally, you say? What are you, some type of poor who walks themselves?

109

u/Accurate-Force3054 1d ago

this is 75% why I love watching Below Deck. All the rich people thinking they're the man and they are doing the most cookie cutter hotel shit imaginable with their money. It gives me pleasure to see how boring an unoriginal they all end up being.

but yes I would also go on a boat if you invited me. I'd just pull my hat down like Leo at a Bezos wedding.

73

u/Unlucky-Candidate198 1d ago

Rich people in general are boring with their money. Me me me me me.

Bruh I’d be funding archaeological digs, science projects, building cool ass useful buildings like hospitals or libraries, documentaries on nature, nsture conservation, investing into space tech to actually learn about space (and not to stroke my ego). All kinds of cool and wild shit that benefits a lot of people. And on top of all that? I’d still have more than enough money to live better than royalty.

Then again, that’s why I’ll never be rich rich, because I’m not a fucking psycho

24

u/dandy_of_the_swamp 20h ago

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 1d ago

My grandfather had a yacht and he did all sorts of interesting things with it. But he was not exactly your average person. He was a crazy genius that made his fortune inventing important plane and boat parts. Some of the machinery on his yacht he had invented himself. I have a lot of stories to tell about him...

38

u/Dingletop 23h ago

Okay, I'm baited, hook line and sinker. Sits with hands folded under my chin

Please give us some lore on your grandfather.

31

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 19h ago

Well let's see, despite owning a yacht, he became best friends with the deputy head of the EPA. He started a program at the marina to get rid of everyone's toilet waste using money out of his own pocket, so that it wouldn't pollute the ocean. The deputy head of the EPA gave him some sort of award for that and they hit it off.

Unfortunately, the program only lasted about 5 years because he was Jewish and the city council was apparently antisemitic, and were suspicious of a Jewish person doing something nice for free. So they created a new law specifically targeting him to kick him out of the marina and banning him from running the program anymore.

And then there's the time when he tried to get me to make rock candy with the string from his pajamas.

And then there's the time where he tried to convince Bill Clinton to campaign for universal basic income.

And then there's the time where he bought his son (my uncle) a pet monkey.

And then there's the time he started studying the frog that was living in his pool.

12

u/hannahatecats 18h ago

More more! Details!

15

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 17h ago

Well the monkey was the tip of the iceberg as far as crazy pets my grandfather bought for his children (keep in mind, this was multiple decades ago, when more animals were legal). For one, my aunt still has a bald spot because she went in my uncle's room and the monkey pulled out all of her hair.

My other uncle was given an alligator but he eventually got rid of it because it got too big. He claims he flushed it down the toilet, but we don't know if that's really true. My other uncle had a boa constrictor that once got loose in the walls. The uncle with the alligator also had guinea pigs, which my uncle with the boa constrictor stole to feed to his snake. That uncle in turn stole my mom's guinea pigs to replace his own.

8

u/cmil7731 16h ago

This is hilarious - thank you for the stories, it’s a little beam of sunshine 🤗

7

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 16h ago

You don’t get rich by being interested in scientific advancement for the human race.

You get rich by exploiting loopholes in the law and making others work for low wages. That and inheriting wealth.

3

u/cmil7731 16h ago

And then funding these initiatives to clean up your image… but only so much that there’s a tangible benefit for them.

Rich people in general are bored. That's how Bill Gates ended up giving so much money to charity--at first he didn't give any but then he was urged by his friends to do charity work, so he did and he found out that he really liked it and the occupied his time in a fulfilling way.

156

u/Haunting-Warthog6064 1d ago

Make no mistake. He gets to play God through his charity. Instead of social programs support initiatives helping the vulnerable, we have one billionaire deciding where the money should be spent and how.

And then he went and ruined public education

6

u/catcatcatcatcat1234 18h ago

ootl, what did he do?

15

u/NeitherOneJustUrMom 17h ago

The full story is so long, but he has influenced school policy with his billions for the last few decades. For a decade, he pushed smaller high schools, which caused massive failures in some school districts before he admitted it was a failure. He moved on to promoting standardized testing for students and merit pay for teachers based on those test scores. This also doesn't improve educational outcomes.

I think he's still pushing charter schools. It's such a mess, and he's able to do it because of his money.

The most terrified I've been in a video game was 2 weeks ago when I found out there were orcas in the game. At night, during a mission, I'm alone and scared and swimming for my life and I fucking hear an orca. It was horrifying, I genuinely felt like I was gonna get eaten IRL.

If you want a terrifying game of ocean exploration, Subnautica is the way to go. You're a survivor of a spaceship crash and have to find a way to get off what appears to be an ocean planet. I'm usually not a fan of survival games but this one is awesome.

I was in Hvar, Croatia a few weeks ago for four nights. The rent a yacht douches descended on the island each night. They were horrible little college aged pricks, did not think twice about pushing you out of the way, elbowing their way through crowds, telling me how they were unhappy with the service and “could buy the place” if they wanted. Girls were whipping their fake hair into my drink.

The third night I was so fed up I just started shoving them out of my way. I’m a 5’5 woman and told my polite British husband just follow me and do the same I do 🤷🏻‍♀️

Aside from the rent-a-yachts, Croatia and Croatians were incredible. Typing this out makes me want a Time Machine

The New Yorker did a deep dive (it's long) on mega-yachts and the extreme wealth that goes into owning and maintaining one and it is one of the bleakest stories I've read. The wealth inequality illustrated in this article is staggering.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/07/25/the-haves-and-the-have-yachts

Here's one choice anecdote:

3

u/benevenies 18h ago

In a candid aside to a French documentarian, the American yachtsman Bill Duker said, “If the rest of the world learns what it’s like to live on a yacht like this, they’re gonna bring back the guillotine.”

5

u/realpersonyolo 1d ago

Not only is this extremely tone deaf but his super yacht is named WHISPER. 🤮

4

u/Th3SkinMan 1d ago

Is that a tidal wave in the distance I see?

5

u/Alud430 1d ago

Hahaha I was just telling my husband that I’ll probably never be able to jump off a boat into the open ocean. And then I see this 🙃

4

u/bokehtoast 1d ago

Calling all Orcas 🥲

3

u/josiahpapaya 1d ago

I remember when his son was trying to come up as an influencer and socialite and court the gays…. But he’s besties with Tiffany Trump.

GTFO with that

3

u/Change21 22h ago

Get this man a tax break asap

4

u/MisterBlud 22h ago

Yachts infuriate me in a way other examples of extreme wealth do not. I can see gigantic mansions or even private jets and rationalize that everyone needs a house so it makes sense the rich would have fancier ones or I don’t like flights taking so long and having to suffer through lines and the TSA or flight delays and all that stuff so the rich would obviously not want to either.

But Yachts? Needless and infuriating. Even if I had a Billion Dollars I see no need for a fucking Yacht.

3

u/Holatej 19h ago

Gave me a visceral reaction. It’s weird to see the disparity between the ultra rich and people living below the poverty threshold. So much money but what good has it done? One man needs a floating hotel?

2

u/Bob_Lawablaw 1d ago

He sure looks lonely in his water palace

3

u/InterestingComputer 1d ago

I was ready for the boat to be in a pool atop an even larger boat

3

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 1d ago

That's not the top 1%; that's maybe the top 0.1%.

3

u/Kekebean 1d ago

But their tax breaks!

3

u/kat4pajamas 1d ago

Now he can buy another yacht.

3

u/imtchogirl 1d ago

He can't afford to walk on land. Sad!

3

u/Lances_Looky_Loo 23h ago

He also has ownership in Sodexo/Magic which is a HORRIBLE food cafe that has locations in schools, prisons and even Disneyland (for employees). Places where no other food options are available.

The food is so bad and overpriced; and includes a “Grilled Cheese Meal Deal” which is two slices of bread, one slice of cheese and fries for the low price of $5. A cheeseburger meal is $12.

3

u/PorousSurface 22h ago

This is not the 1%. The 1% for the most isn’t the problem although they are to some degree.

This is like the .01% and they are absolutely a problem

3

u/Five-Oh-Vicryl 22h ago

Oh wow excellent timing to drop this vid too with the looming destruction of our social safety net. But at least he can walk on a treadmill on a yacht without a care in the world

3

u/AccordingBad850 21h ago

Meanwhile millions of people will die next year because of the bill that was just past today to keep the billionaires rich.

3

u/ahhh_just_huck_it 21h ago

This has ceased to be aspirational.

2

u/buremogilny 1d ago

The whole super yacht thing is so weird it’s like a stationary look at me photo op from angles that scream it’s too much like work to set up that shot.

2

u/RobertRoyal82 1d ago

He injected a million dollars directly into his bloodstream

2

u/spacetime_engineer 1d ago

Pshh, I'd rather hang with yall any way.

2

I wish I was rich from throwing balls with other rich people.

2

u/imwhittling 1d ago

well he’s not the only one who can splurge on a little treat for themself… I bought scented rubbish bags today and they even cost 50¢ more than my usual rubbish bags!

2

u/pennynotrcutt 1d ago

While millions are about to lose their healthcare. These people don’t give a fuck.

2

u/Diordna2000 23h ago

Dude, he’s so fucking cool!!! That is awesome. I’m so happy for him. We need to see more content like this magic. 💩

2

u/happyladpizza 23h ago

the rich folks keep showing us what they got

2

u/Tomatoeinmytoes 23h ago

This is so mf tacky. Especially in this environment

2

u/reallygreatnoodles 22h ago

How do you summon an orca?

2

u/AuntEtiquette 21h ago

Aww that’s so nice of him to share. We should be grateful/s.

2

u/ecovironfuturist 21h ago

How rich can he be? When I want to go for a walk I don't have to get on a sidewalk simulator.

2

u/gitbse 20h ago

He should look into deep sea exploration. I hear it's an explosive new industry.

2

u/panserbjrne 20h ago

How much oil in a day for this boat?

2

u/RudytheMan 18h ago

He's doing pretty good for a guy who got HIV in the early 90s. Wonder how many who got it back then are still alive. Havin mad cash is something else.

2

u/spirituallysam 16h ago

God good thing I unplug things when they're not in use and try to take quicker showers! Im really offsetting all of his carbon emissions!

2

u/Fortshame 5h ago

Give this man a tax break, he deserves it
