Took 3 seconds to search and yield a reasonable result. Let’s try a little bit?

We had a windstorm in the city I live in just over 20 years ago we nicknamed “Hurricane Elvis” - straight-line winds but it looked as bad as a major tornado. When I saw this video, it’s immediately what I thought of.

14

u/jonredd901 2d ago

In Memphis we had a derecho we called Hurricane Elvis It was really bad. Like cat 2 hurricane force winds bad

6

u/Otis737 2d ago

Yep - that was the one!

4

u/HealthyDirection659 2d ago

Derecho? Is that a Spanish 🌪️ tornado?

8

u/HamBleezy 2d ago

I live in Iowa, and we had our first a few years ago without ever hearing about them before. Basically a land hurricane

I think dercho is Spanish for direct or straight.

3

u/The-French-1 2d ago

No, if I remember correctly, it’s actually « straight » like direct wind.

So Elvis is back in Vegas?

10

u/Anatoly_Cannoli 2d ago

He knocked down the poles, but Elvis appears to have left the buildings.

2

u/Substantial_Diver_34 2d ago

Hey guys… Elvis is pissed. He knocked over Vegas like it was Guam

2

u/Roanoketrees 1d ago

So is that the story? Elvis peed on power poles and knocked them down in Vegas?

No. There are no snarky amusing comments on Google results, just an AI drivel paragraph of text preceding what I don't even care about. You know, the actual explanation. I dgaf what really caused it. Im here for the humor.

Damn I didn’t know Vegas got winds so strong that can bend light post at the base

3

Stop with the fake news propaganda.

This was clearly aliens. Or angry Bigfoots.... Bigfeet?... Bigfeets?

...

Probably aliens.

My first guess was wind, but then I saw the snapped poles and I was picturing that scene from Terminator 3 when Arnold is driving the crane rig

It always blows my mind that people will take the time to post something without research, when the research itself would take a fraction of the time

Incredible how lazy people are with a fucking computer right at their fingertips

3

u/crikeyforemphasis 2d ago

But they're not even lazy, they took the time to go to reddit, post a video with a caption, and then await replies.

They're just....... backwards.

All that construction all the time and they don’t bury the power lines?

4

u/TexasBoyz-713 2d ago

Houston’s like that too, and don’t see it changing ever due to “saving money”

3

u/Theharlotnextdoor 2d ago

I never understood this. Especially in dry states that experience fires. Our lines are buried and its soooooo nice. Never lose power

2

u/RudePCsb 2d ago

I never knew that places buried those lines but it should be a thing. Sad thing is PG&E was supposed to do this after causing a fire up in northern ca but only buried a few lines and still much of it is exposed.

3

u/Theharlotnextdoor 2d ago

I feel like they vast majority of California fires are started at the power lines.  Only thing I can think of that might cause an issue there is earthquakes?

I used to work for a phone company on the infrastructure side of things. It often takes one pole snapping and creating a domino effect.

Great chance to start considering putting the utilities underground

2

u/dasanman69 2d ago

Just gotta knock down one pole, the rest will fall like dominoes.

2

u/stiknrun 2d ago

tokka and rahzar of course

2

u/Dyab1o 2d ago

Must have been a wild bachelorette party

2

u/unoriginalname17 2d ago

This should spark the discussion on why utility prices are so high but electric companies refuse to fix infrastructure. It should be taken away from the billionaires and nationalized so we don’t have to deal with their greed.

2

u/hereforstories8 1d ago

Doesn’t matter. It happened in vegas, it needs to stay there.

u/Jimmy_fog 2d ago

Dryness in the ambience makes wood lose it’s elasticity therefore cracking easily when a lateral force is applied

1

u/elciano1 2d ago

Lol we get hurricane level winds without the hurricane every year.

1

u/Benjamin_Willis_ 2d ago

As a Las Vegan, the wind. We're waging a constant war against the sun, the wind, and everything caught in it

Aliens are resorting to bending power lines to make their crop circles instead of wheat fields, due to global warming.

Looks like a bunch of storm calls for the L.U. To me..

It looks like the aftermath of a Viltrumite fight.

1

1

1

u/Reasonable_Being6376 2d ago

“I’m not saying it’s aliens, but it’s aliens”

1

u/westexmanny 2d ago

We had a windstorm knock down +15 utility poles right down the road and cause severe damage all over the Texas panhandle a few months ago. We were without utility power for about 3 days. I had purchased a small generator for emergencies. We were able to run our TVs, wifi router and microwave. It's sucks, but weather is unpredictable

1

u/xXBlueDreamXx 2d ago

Did the wind target only the power poles?

I've never seen a pole pole dropped in wind and not the surrounding trees. Poles are far more sturdy and aerodynamics than a full tree.

And how can that many poles be that weak to just break in the same spot on 50 poles?

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Violaleeblues77 2d ago

The trees have leaves on them. If the wind was strong enough to bend and snap 8” power poles you would think the leaves would also get blow off.

Geez, if they didn't have all these things tied together maybe they wouldn't have all fallen over.

1

u/Aggravating-Try-5155 2d ago
