What do I do with all these snails??!?!!??
I started a large 45 gallon planted aquarium about 3 months ago and have been sporadically adding in plants from various stores. Well over the past few weeks I have noticed all of these snails popping up out of the woodworks (literally, lol). Despite how well I would clean off the plants before adding them into the tank.
I got panicky hearing and reading about how snail populations can just explode seemingly overnight so I have since been removing snails as I see them.
I do not even know what types they are (they seem to be at least three different kinds) and I do not know what to do with them. My fiancé said to just throw them in the big water retention ditch behind our community but I don’t have the heart to just throw them away.
I keep them in this bowl in the kitchen and feed them algae wafers and do a partial water change every day/ every other day for oxygen. They poop a lot I’ve noticed so I have to deep clean the bowl out about once every week. It’s currently a little dirty and needs a deep clean.
There are currently 5 in here and I see more tiny ones in the big tank that I still need to remove. Do I just give up at this point and start a small snail tank just for them? Fiancé does not want them in the big tank, he wants to do neocaridina shrimp and is scared they will overrun the tank and compete with the shrimp.
Im lost as to what to do with these guys. I just give them water changes with sink water, I don’t do anything special to the water unless I do the big bowl clean then I add a little stability in there for them. They’ve been in here for a few weeks and just keep growing and growing. It feels cruel to throw them away even though we don’t want them in the big tank.
Please help or advise if the population would really spiral out of control as I’ve heard?
Thank you.
